Journal ArticleDOI
The high value of logged tropical forests: lessons from northern Borneo
Nicholas J. Berry,Oliver L. Phillips,Simon L. Lewis,Jane K. Hill,David Edwards,Noel Tawatao,Norhayati Ahmad,David Magintan,Chey Vun Khen,M. Maryati,M. Maryati,Robert C. Ong,Keith C. Hamer +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the impacts of logging on carbon storage and biodiversity within lowland dipterocarp forests of Sabah, Borneo were quantified using >100,000 observations of individuals from 11 taxonomic groups and >2,500 species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimating aboveground biomass in forest and oil palm plantation in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo using ALOS PALSAR data
Alexandra C. Morel,Sassan Saatchi,Yadvinder Malhi,Nicholas J. Berry,Lindsay F. Banin,David F. R. P. Burslem,Reuben Nilus,Robert C. Ong +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a combination of field and remote sensing data was used to quantify both the magnitude and the geographical distribution of carbon stock in forests and timber plantations, in Sabah, Malaysia, which has been the site of significant expansion of oil palm cultivation over the last two decades.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term carbon sink in Borneo’s forests halted by drought and vulnerable to edge effects
Lan Qie,Lan Qie,Simon L. Lewis,Simon L. Lewis,Martin J. P. Sullivan,Gabriela Lopez-Gonzalez,Georgia Pickavance,Terry Sunderland,Terry Sunderland,Peter S. Phillips +57 more
TL;DR: Using direct on-the-ground observations, the authors confirm that remaining intact forests in Borneo have provided a long-term carbon sink, but carbon net gains are vulnerable to drought and edge effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Co-Benefits of Sustainable Forest Management in Biodiversity Conservation and Carbon Sequestration
Nobuo Imai,Hiromitsu Samejima,Andreas Langner,Robert C. Ong,Satoshi Kita,Jupiri Titin,Arthur Y. C. Chung,Peter Lagan,Ying Fah Lee,Kanehiro Kitayama +9 more
TL;DR: The application of SFM to degraded natural production forests could result in greater diversity and abundance of vertebrate species as well as increasing carbon storage in the tropical rain forest ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carbon stocks and fluxes in tropical lowland dipterocarp rainforests in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
TL;DR: It is concluded that selective logging decreased the dipterocarp stock in the Malua Forest Reserve of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo by 55–66%, and silvicultural treatments may have the potential to accelerate the recovery of dipteroarp C stocks to pre-logging levels.
