Journal ArticleDOI
SARS-CoV-2 infection in farmed minks, the Netherlands, April and May 2020.
Nadia Oreshkova,Robert Jan Molenaar,Sandra Vreman,Frank Harders,Bas B. Oude Munnink,Renate Hakze-van der Honing,Nora M. Gerhards,Paulien Tolsma,Ruth Bouwstra,Reina S. Sikkema,Mirriam G.J. Tacken,Myrna M.T. de Rooij,Eefke Weesendorp,Marc Y. Engelsma,Christianne Bruschke,Lidwien A.M. Smit,Marion Koopmans,Wim H.M. van der Poel,Arjan Stegeman +18 more
TL;DR: Variations in mink-derived viral genomes showed between-mink transmission and no infection link between the farms, and inhalable dust contained viral RNA, indicating possible exposure of workers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical and Pathological Findings in SARS-CoV-2 Disease Outbreaks in Farmed Mink ( Neovison vison ).
Robert Jan Molenaar,Sandra Vreman,Renate W. Hakze-van der Honing,Rob Zwart,Jan de Rond,Eefke Weesendorp,Lidwien A.M. Smit,Marion Koopmans,Ruth Bouwstra,Arjan Stegeman,Wim H.M. van der Poel +10 more
TL;DR: The most striking postmortem finding was an acute interstitial pneumonia, which was found in nearly all examined mink that died at the peak of the outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2, which caused respiratory disease outbreaks in mink farms in the Netherlands.

SARS-CoV2 infection in farmed mink, Netherlands, April 2020
Nadia Oreshkova,Robert-Jan Molenaar,Sandra Vreman,Frank Harders,Bas B. Oude Munnink,Renate W. Hakze-vd Honing,Nora M. Gerhards,Paulien Tolsma,Ruth Bouwstra,Reina S. Sikkema,Mirriam G.J. Tacken,Myrna M.T. de Rooij,Eefke Weesendorp,Marc Y. Engelsma,Christianne Bruschke,Lidwien A.M. Smit,Marion Koopmans,Wim H.M. van der Poel,Jan Arend Stegeman +18 more
TL;DR: Variations in viral genomes point at between-mink transmission on the farms and lack of infection link between the farms, and possible exposure of workers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 in animals: Evidence of ACE2 host receptor distribution in companion animals, livestock and wildlife by immunohistochemical characterisation.
Fabian Z. X. Lean,Alejandro Núñez,Simon Spiro,Simon L. Priestnall,Sandra Vreman,Dalan Bailey,Joe James,Ethan Wrigglesworth,Alejandro Suárez-Bonnet,Carina Conceicao,Nazia Thakur,Alexander M. P. Byrne,Stuart Ackroyd,Richard J. Delahay,Wim H.M. van der Poel,Ian H. Brown,Anthony R. Fooks,Sharon M. Brookes +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the distribution of ACE2 using immunohistochemistry (IHC) on histological sections derived from carnivores, ungulates, primates and chiroptera.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predictive Value of Precision-Cut Lung Slices for the Susceptibility of Three Animal Species for SARS-CoV-2 and Validation in a Refined Hamster Model
Nora M. Gerhards,J.B.W.J. Cornelissen,Lucien van Keulen,Jose Harders-Westerveen,R.P.M. Vloet,Bregtje Smid,S.A. Vastenhouw,Sophie van Oort,Renate W. Hakze-van der Honing,Jose L. Gonzales,Norbert Stockhofe-Zurwieden,Rineke de Jong,Wim H.M. van der Poel,Sandra Vreman,Jeroen Kortekaas,Paul J. Wichgers Schreur,Nadia Oreshkova +16 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assessed whether precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) could facilitate the selection of animal models, thereby reducing animal experimentation and found that PCLS can be used as convenient tool for the screening of different animal species for sensitivity to newly emerged viruses.
