Journal ArticleDOI
A representation of the phosphorus cycle for ORCHIDEE (revision 4520)
Daniel S. Goll,Nicolas Vuichard,Fabienne Maignan,Albert Jornet-Puig,Jordi Sardans,Aurelie Violette,Shushi Peng,Yan Sun,Marko Kvakić,Matthieu Guimberteau,Matthieu Guimberteau,Bertrand Guenet,Soenke Zaehle,Josep Peñuelas,Ivan A. Janssens,Philippe Ciais +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, the ORCHIDEE land surface model is used to model the terrestrial phosphorus cycle and its interactions with the carbon cycle, and evaluate it with data from nutrient manipulation experiments along a soil formation chronosequence in Hawaii.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensive ecosystem model-data synthesis using multiple data sets at two temperate forest free-air CO2 enrichment experiments: Model performance at ambient CO2 concentration
Anthony P. Walker,Anthony P. Walker,Paul J. Hanson,Martin G. De Kauwe,Belinda E. Medlyn,Soenke Zaehle,Shinichi Asao,Michael Dietze,Thomas Hickler,Chris Huntingford,Colleen M. Iversen,Atul K. Jain,Mark R. Lomas,Yiqi Luo,Heather R. McCarthy,William J. Parton,I. Colin Prentice,I. Colin Prentice,Peter E. Thornton,Shusen Wang,Ying-Ping Wang,David Wårlind,Ensheng Weng,Jeffrey M. Warren,F. Ian Woodward,Ram Oren,Ram Oren,Richard J. Norby +27 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate that high goodness-of-fit values do not necessarily indicate a successful model, because simulation accuracy may be achieved through compensating biases in component variables.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting long-term carbon sequestration in response to CO2 enrichment: How and why do current ecosystem models differ?
Anthony P. Walker,Soenke Zaehle,Belinda E. Medlyn,Martin G. De Kauwe,Shinichi Asao,Thomas Hickler,William J. Parton,Daniel M. Ricciuto,Ying-Ping Wang,David Wårlind,David Wårlind,Richard J. Norby +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a suite of seven models to simulate the Duke and Oak Ridge Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiments extended for 300 years of CO2 enrichment, and determined key modeling assumptions that drive divergent projections of terrestrial carbon uptake and evaluate whether these assumptions can be constrained by experimental evidence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of land surface models in reproducing satellite-derived LAI over the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere : Part I: Uncoupled DGVMs
Guillermo N. Murray-Tortarolo,Alessandro Anav,Pierre Friedlingstein,Stephen Sitch,Shilong Piao,Zaichun Zhu,Benjamin Poulter,Soenke Zaehle,Anders Ahlström,Mark R. Lomas,Samuel Levis,N. Viovy,Ning Zeng +12 more
TL;DR: Leaf Area Index represents the total surface area of leaves above a unit area of ground and is a key variable in any vegetation model, as well as in climate models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Land-use and land-cover change carbon emissions between 1901 and 2012 constrained by biomass observations
Wei Li,Philippe Ciais,Shushi Peng,Shushi Peng,Chao Yue,Yilong Wang,Martin Thurner,Sassan Saatchi,Almut Arneth,Valerio Avitabile,Nuno Carvalhais,Nuno Carvalhais,Anna B. Harper,Etsushi Kato,Charles D. Koven,Yi Y. Liu,Julia E. M. S. Nabel,Yude Pan,Julia Pongratz,Benjamin Poulter,Thomas A. M. Pugh,Thomas A. M. Pugh,Maurizio Santoro,Stephen Sitch,Benjamin D. Stocker,Benjamin D. Stocker,Nicolas Viovy,Andy Wiltshire,Rasoul Yousefpour,Rasoul Yousefpour,Soenke Zaehle +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a new method of using satellite and inventory-based biomass observations to constrain historical cumulative LULCC emissions (ELUCc) from an ensemble of nine DGVMs based on emerging relationships between simulated vegetation biomass and ELUCc is proposed.
