Rationale and Design of INTERSTROKE: A Global Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Stroke
Martin O'Donnell,Denis Xavier,C Diener,Ralph L. Sacco,Liu Lisheng,Hongye Zhang,P Pias,Thomas Truelsen,S L Chin,Sumathy Rangarajan,L DeVilliers,Albertino Damasceno,C. Mondo,Fernando Lanas,Alvaro Avezum,Rafael Diaz,John Varigos,Graeme J. Hankey,Philip Teal,Moira K. Kapral,Danuta Ryglewicz,Anna Członkowska,Marta Skowrońska,Patricio Lopez-Jaramillo,T Dans,Peter Langhorne,Salim Yusuf +26 more
TL;DR: An effective global strategy to reduce the risk of stroke mandates systematic measurement of the contribution of the major vascular risk factors within defined ethnic groups and geographical locations.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: While the burden of NCD care may appear greatest in LMICs and China, the burden in LICs may be masked by care foregone due to costs, showing that financial protection from healthcare costs for people with NCDs is inadequate.
The Effect of Chromosome 9p21 Variants on Cardiovascular Disease May Be Modified by Dietary Intake: Evidence from a Case/Control and a Prospective Study
Ron Do,Changchun Xie,Xiaohe Zhang,Satu Männistö,Kennet Harald,Shofiqul Islam,Swneke D. Bailey,Sumathy Rangarajan,Matthew J. McQueen,Rafael Diaz,Liu Lisheng,Xingyu Wang,Kaisa Silander,Leena Peltonen,Salim Yusuf,Veikko Salomaa,James C. Engert,Sonia S. Anand +17 more
TL;DR: It is found that a prudent diet high in raw vegetables may modify the increased genetic risk of cardiovascular disease conferred by the chromosome 9p21 SNP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inequalities in the use of secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease by socioeconomic status: evidence from the PURE observational study
Adrianna Murphy,Benjamin Palafox,Owen O'Donnell,Owen O'Donnell,David Stuckler,Pablo Perel,Khalid F. AlHabib,Alvaro Avezum,Xiulin Bai,Jephat Chifamba,Clara K Chow,Daniel J. Corsi,Gilles R. Teo,Andreas Wielgosz,Karen Yeates,Lu Yin,Khalid Yusoff,Katarzyna Zatońska,Salim Yusuf,Martin McKee +40 more
TL;DR: Use of medication for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease is alarmingly low in many countries with the lowest use, pro-rich inequality is greatest, and policies associated with an equal or pro-poor distribution include free medications and community health programmes to support adherence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Joint association of urinary sodium and potassium excretion with cardiovascular events and mortality: prospective cohort study.
Martin O'Donnell,Martin O'Donnell,Andrew Mente,Sumathy Rangarajan,Matthew J. McQueen,Neil O'Leary,Lu Yin,Xiaoyun Liu,Sumathi Swaminathan,Rasha Khatib,Annika Rosengren,John Ferguson,Andrew Smyth,Patricio Lopez-Jaramillo,Rafael Diaz,Alvaro Avezum,Fernando Lanas,Noor Hassim Ismail,Khalid Yusoff,Antonio L. Dagenais,Andreas Wielgosz,Scott A. Lear,Koon K. Teo,Salim Yusuf +34 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the simultaneous target of low sodium intake (<2 g/day) with high potassium intake (>3.5 g/ day) is extremely uncommon, and combined moderate sodium intake (3-5 g / day) withhigh potassium intake is associated with the lowest risk of mortality and cardiovascular events.
