Journal ArticleDOI
Acute pain induces insulin resistance in humans.
TL;DR: Acute severe pain decreases insulin sensitivity, primarily by affecting nonoxidative glucose metabolism, and it is conceivable that the counterregulatory hormonal response plays an important role.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lower or Higher Oxygenation Targets for Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure
Olav L. Schjørring,Thomas Lass Klitgaard,Anders Perner,Jørn Wetterslev,Theis Lange,Martin Siegemund,Minna Bäcklund,Frederik Keus,Jon Henrik Laake,Matt Morgan,Katrin Thormar,Søren A. Aslam,Robert Winding,Joerg C. Schefold,Stine B. Thorup,Susanne Iversen,Janus Engstrøm,Maj Brit Nørregaard Kjær,Bodil Steen Rasmussen +61 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the benefits and harms of different oxygenation levels for patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in the intensive care unit (ICU) were discussed. But, the benefits of different levels of oxygenation were not evaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Effect of Oral Glucose on Serum Free Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I and -II in Healthy Adults
TL;DR: Findings extend the previous findings of an inverse correlation between free IGF-I and IGFBP-1 in cross-sectionally collected fasting serum samples to include longitudinal observations, and substantiates the hypothesis that IGF BP-1 is an important determinant of free IGF -I in vivo.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute pain induces an instant increase in natural killer cell cytotoxicity in humans and this response is abolished by local anaesthesia.
Jacob Greisen,M Hokland,Thorbjørn Grøfte,P. O. Hansen,Troels S. Jensen,Hendrik Vilstrup,Else Tønnesen +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that acute severe pain without tissue injury markedly increased NK cell cytotoxicity and local anaesthesia completely abolished this immunological and hormonal response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Growth Hormone and Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I Singly and in Combination on In Vivo Capacity of Urea Synthesis, Gene Expression of Urea Cycle Enzymes, and Organ Nitrogen Contents in Rats
Thorbjørn Grøfte,Troels Wolthers,Søren Astrup Jensen,Niels Møller,Jens Otto Lunde Jørgensen,Niels Tygstrup,Hans Ørskov,Hendrik Vilstrup +7 more
TL;DR: It is speculated that this inhibitory effect on the capacity of urea synthesis is caused by a decreased translation rate of the urea cycle enzymes caused by GH and IGF‐I's down‐regulatory effect on Urea cycle enzyme gene transcription.
