Journal ArticleDOI
Recent climate change in the Arctic and its impact on contaminant pathways and interpretation of temporal trend data.
TL;DR: The Arctic has undergone dramatic change during the past decade, and the observed changes include atmospheric sea-level pressure, wind fields, sea-ice drift, ice cover, length of melt season, change in precipitation patterns, change in hydrology and change in ocean currents and watermass distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contaminants in the Canadian Arctic: 5 years of progress in understanding sources, occurrence and pathways.
Robie W. Macdonald,Leonard A. Barrie,Terry F. Bidleman,Miriam L. Diamond,Dennis Gregor,R. G. Semkin,William M. J. Strachan,Yi-Fan Li,Frank Wania,Mehran Alaee,L.B. Alexeeva,Sean Backus,R. Bailey,J.M. Bewers,Charles Gobeil,Crispin J. Halsall,Tom Harner,Julian T. Hoff,Liisa M. Jantunen,W.L. Lockhart,Donald Mackay,Derek C. G. Muir,Janusz A. Pudykiewicz,Kenneth J. Reimer,John N. Smith,Gary A. Stern,W.H. Schroeder,R. Wagemann,Mark B. Yunker +28 more
TL;DR: New knowledge developed under the NCP on the sources, occurrence and pathways of contaminants (organochlorines, Hg, Pb and Cd, PAHs, artificial radionuclides) are highlighted and compelling evidence for close connectivity between the global emission of contaminants from industrial and agricultural activities and the Arctic is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is House Dust the Missing Exposure Pathway for PBDEs? An Analysis of the Urban Fate and Human Exposure to PBDEs
Heather A. Jones-Otazo,John Clarke,Miriam L. Diamond,Josephine A. Archbold,Glenn Ferguson,Tom Harner,G Mark Richardson,John Jake Ryan,Bryony H. Wilford +8 more
TL;DR: Inadvertent ingestion of house dust is the largest contributor to exposure of toddlers through to adults and is the main exposure pathway for all life stages other than the infant, including the nursing mother, who transfers PBDEs to her infant via human milk.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization and comparison of three passive air samplers for persistent organic pollutants.
Mahiba Shoeib,Tom Harner +1 more
TL;DR: The accumulation of persistent organic pollutants by three passive sampling media--semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), polyurethane foam (PUF) disks, and an organic-rich soil--was investigated and passive sampler-air partition coefficients, KPSM-A, were calculated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Passive Air Sampling of PCBs, PBDEs, and Organochlorine Pesticides Across Europe
TL;DR: This study presents concurrently sampled ambient air data for a range of persistent organic pollutants at the continental scale using a passive air sampling system, deploying polyurethane foam disks, and found HCB was relatively uniformly distributed, reflecting its persistence and high degree of mixing in air.
