Zbinden,Brendan J. Godley +34 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a list of priority research questions was assembled based on the opinions of 35 sea turtle researchers from 13 nations working in fields related to sea turtle biology and/or conservation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global patterns of marine mammal, seabird, and sea turtle bycatch reveal taxa-specific and cumulative megafauna hotspots
Rebecca L. Lewison,Larry B. Crowder,Bryan P. Wallace,Jeffrey E. Moore,Tara M. Cox,Ramunas Zydelis,Sara L. McDonald,Andrew DiMatteo,Daniel C. Dunn,Connie Y. Kot,Rhema Bjorkland,Shaleyla Kelez,Candan U. Soykan,Kelly R. Stewart,Michelle Sims,Andre M. Boustany,Andrew J. Read,Patrick N. Halpin,Wallace J. Nichols,Carl Safina +19 more
TL;DR: This analysis provides an unprecedented global assessment of the distribution and magnitude of air-breathing megafauna bycatch, highlighting its cumulative nature and the urgent need to build on existing mitigation successes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global research priorities to mitigate plastic pollution impacts on marine wildlife
Amanda C Vegter,Mário Barletta,Cathy A. Beck,Jose C. Borrero,Harry R. Burton,Marnie L. Campbell,Monica F. Costa,Marcus Eriksen,Cecilia Eriksson,Andres Estrades,Kirsten V. K. Gilardi,Britta Denise Hardesty,Juliana A. Ivar do Sul,Jennifer L. Lavers,Jennifer L. Lavers,Bojan Lazar,Laurent Lebreton,Wallace J. Nichols,Christine A. Ribic,Peter G. Ryan,Qamar Schuyler,Stephen David Anthony Smith,Hideshige Takada,Kathy A. Townsend,Colette C. C. Wabnitz,Chris Wilcox,Lindsay C Young,Mark Hamann +27 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a growing concern related to threats posed to marine wildlife from microplastics and frag- ment debris, the need for data at scales relevant to management, and the urgent need to develop interdisciplinary research and management partnerships to limit the release of plastics into the environment and curb the future impacts of plastic pollution is highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Small-scale fisheries bycatch jeopardizes endangered Pacific loggerhead turtles.
S. Hoyt Peckham,David Diaz,Andreas Walli,Georgita Ruiz,Larry B. Crowder,Wallace J. Nichols,Wallace J. Nichols +6 more
TL;DR: A case study suggests that small-scale fisheries may be among the greatest current threats to non-target megafauna, and localizing coastal high use areas and mitigating bycatch in partnership with small- scale fishers may provide a crucial solution toward ensuring the persistence of vulnerable megafauns.
Journal ArticleDOI

Godley +43 more
TL;DR: A systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature (2014 and 2015) attributing papers to the original 20 meta-questions was conducted by as discussed by the authors, who found that significant research is being expended towards global priorities for management and conservation of sea turtles, including reproductive biology, biogeography, population ecology, threats and conservation strategies.
