Journal ArticleDOI
Association between Renal Disease and Outcomes among HIV-Infected Women Receiving or Not Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy
Lynda A. Szczech,Donald R. Hoover,Joseph G. Feldman,Mardge H. Cohen,Stephen J. Gange,Lisa Goozé,Nancy R. Rubin,Mary Young,Xiaotao Cai,Qiuhu Shi,Wei Gao,Kathryn Anastos +11 more
TL;DR: Proteinuria and an elevated creatinine level were associated with an increased risk of death and development of ADI, which may reflect the direct role of the kidney in modulating HIV disease, or they may act as markers of greater comorbidity.
Journal ArticleDOI
HIV-1 in genital tract and plasma of women: Compartmentalization of viral sequences, coreceptor usage, and glycosylation
Kimdar Sherefa Kemal,Brian T. Foley,Harold Burger,Harold Burger,Kathryn Anastos,Howard Minkoff,Christina M. R. Kitchen,Sean Philpott,Wei Gao,Esther Robison,Susan Holman,Carolyn A. Dehner,Suzanne Beck,William A. Meyer,Alan L. Landay,Andrea Kovacs,James W. Bremer,Barbara Weiser,Barbara Weiser +18 more
TL;DR: The association of higher CD4+ cell counts with compartmentalization of viral genomes and density of gp120 glycosylations suggests that the immune response influences the development of viral genotypes in each compartment, relevant to the prevention and control of HIV-1 infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and Predictors of Metabolic Syndrome Among HIV-Infected and HIV-Uninfected Women in the Women's Interagency HIV Study
Magdalena E. Sobieszczyk,Donald R. Hoover,Kathryn Anastos,Kathleen Mulligan,Tianren Tan,Qiuhu Shi,Wei Gao,Charles Hyman,Mardge H. Cohen,Stephen R. Cole,Michael Plankey,Alexandra M. Levine,Jessica Justman +12 more
TL;DR: MetSynd is more prevalent in HIV-seropositive than HIV-Seronegative women, and this increased prevalence was due to dyslipidemias rather than higher blood pressure, glucose, or waist circumference.
Journal ArticleDOI
Herpes zoster in women with and at risk for HIV: Data from the women's interagency HIV study
Marshall J. Glesby,Donald R. Hoover,Tianren Tan,Qiuhu Shi,Wei Gao,Audrey L. French,Toby Maurer,Mary Young,Jack DeHovitz,Jenny Ru,Kathryn Anastos +10 more
TL;DR: Lower CD4 cell count was more strongly associated with zoster incidence than were other clinical indicators, and even women with high CD4 counts are at greater risk of zoster than HIV-uninfected women.
Journal ArticleDOI
HIV-1 drug resistance in variants from the female genital tract and plasma
Kimdar Sherefa Kemal,Harold Burger,Harold Burger,Douglas L. Mayers,Kathryn Anastos,Brian T. Foley,Christina M. R. Kitchen,Penelope Huggins,Tamara L. Schroeder,Gaston Picchio,Sara Back,Wei Gao,William A. Meyer,Barbara Weiser,Barbara Weiser +14 more
TL;DR: Data suggest that, for the majority of women, determination of HIV-1 drug resistance in the plasma will approximate the drug-resistance pattern in the genital tract, and minority species bearing distinctive linked mutations may serve as a source of novel resistance genotypes.
