Climate change vulnerability assessment of species
Wendy Foden,Wendy Foden,Bruce E. Young,Bruce E. Young,H. Resit Akçakaya,H. Resit Akçakaya,Raquel A. Garcia,Raquel A. Garcia,Ary A. Hoffmann,Bruce A. Stein,Bruce A. Stein,Chris D. Thomas,Christopher J. Wheatley,Christopher J. Wheatley,David Bickford,Jamie A. Carr,Jamie A. Carr,David G. Hole,Tara G. Martin,Tara G. Martin,Michela Pacifici,Michela Pacifici,James W. Pearce-Higgins,James W. Pearce-Higgins,Philip J. Platts,Philip J. Platts,Piero Visconti,James E. M. Watson,James E. M. Watson,Brian Huntley,Brian Huntley +30 more
TL;DR: The authors provide an overview of the rapidly developing field of climate change vulnerability assessment (CCVA) and describe key concepts, terms, steps and considerations, and stress the importance of identifying the full range of pressures, impacts and their associated mechanisms that species face and using this as a basis for selecting the appropriate assessment approaches for quantifying vulnerability.
Journal ArticleDOI
IPCC reasons for concern regarding climate change risks
Brian C. O'Neill,Michael Oppenheimer,Rachel Warren,Stephane Hallegatte,Robert E. Kopp,Hans O. Pörtner,Robert J. Scholes,Joern Birkmann,Wendy Foden,Rachel Licker,Katharine J. Mach,Phillippe Marbaix,Michael D. Mastrandrea,Jeff Price,Kiyoshi Takahashi,Jean-Pascal van Ypersele,Gary W. Yohe +16 more
TL;DR: The reasons for concern framework as mentioned in this paper has been widely used in the literature to assess risks in relation to varying levels of climate change, and is a cornerstone of the most recent IPCC assessments.
Journal ArticleDOI
A changing climate is eroding the geographical range of the Namib Desert tree Aloe through population declines and dispersal lags
Wendy Foden,Guy F. Midgley,Greg Hughes,William J. Bond,Wilfried Thuiller,M. Timm Hoffman,Prince Kaleme,Les G. Underhill,Anthony G. Rebelo,Lee Hannah +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed population census of the entire geographical range of Aloe dichotoma Masson, a long-lived Namib Desert tree, together with data from repeat photographs was used to show that a developing range shift in this species is a fingerprint of anthropogenic climate change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Filling in biodiversity threat gaps
Lucas Joppa,Brian O'Connor,Piero Visconti,Celina Smith,Jonas Geldmann,Michael R. Hoffmann,James E. M. Watson,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Malika Virah-Sawmy,Benjamin S. Halpern,Sadia E. Ahmed,Andrew Balmford,William J. Sutherland,Mike Harfoot,Craig Hilton-Taylor,Wendy Foden,E. Di Minin,Shyama Pagad,Piero Genovesi,Jon Hutton,Neil Burgess +20 more
TL;DR: This work identifies major gaps in data available for assessing global biodiversity threats and suggests mechanisms for closing them.
Journal ArticleDOI
A framework for integrating biodiversity concerns into national REDD+ programmes
Toby A. Gardner,Toby A. Gardner,Neil D. Burgess,Neil D. Burgess,Naikoa Aguilar-Amuchastegui,Jos Barlow,Jos Barlow,Erika Berenguer,Tom Clements,Finn Danielsen,Joice Ferreira,Wendy Foden,Wendy Foden,Valerie Kapos,Saiful M. Khan,Alexander C. Lees,Luke Parry,Luke Parry,Rosa Maria Roman-Cuesta,Christine B. Schmitt,Niels Strange,Niels Strange,Ida Theilade +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, a general framework for incorporating biodiversity concerns into national REDD+ programs based on well-established ecological principles and experiences is proposed, and a three-tiered approach is proposed for biodiversity assessment, where lower tiers can provide a realistic starting point for countries with fewer data and lower technical capacities.
