Are food insecure smallholder households making changes in their farming practices? Evidence from East Africa
Patti Kristjanson,Henry Neufeldt,Anja Gassner,Joash Mango,Florence Birungi Kyazze,Solomon Desta,George Sayula,Brian C. Thiede,Wiebke Förch,Philip K. Thornton,Richard Coe +10 more
TL;DR: This paper explored the relationship between farming practice changes made by households coping with the huge demographic, economic, and ecological changes they have seen in the last 10 years and household food security and found that households that have been introducing new practices, such as improved management of crops, soil, land, water, and livestock, are more likely to be food secure than less innovative farming households.
Journal ArticleDOI
How resilient are farming households and communities to a changing climate in Africa? A gender-based perspective
Carlos Pérez,E.M. Jones,Patricia M. Kristjanson,Laura Cramer,Philip K. Thornton,Wiebke Förch,Carlos Barahona +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, conditions that underlie vulnerability and resilience possibilities for households and communities that face and respond to climate- and other changes, in nine East and West African countries, are examined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Challenges to scenario-guided adaptive action on food security under climate change
Joost Vervoort,Joost Vervoort,Philip K. Thornton,Philip K. Thornton,Patti Kristjanson,Wiebke Förch,Polly J. Ericksen,Kasper Kok,John Ingram,John Ingram,Mario Herrero,Mario Herrero,Amanda Palazzo,Ariella Helfgott,Ariella Helfgott,Ariella Helfgott,Angela Wilkinson,Petr Havlik,Daniel Mason-D'Croz,Christine Jost +19 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the development and use of scenarios as an approach to guide action in multi-level, multi-actor adaptation contexts such as food security under climate change, and applied lessons about appropriate scope, enabling adaptation pathways, and developing strategic planning capacity to scenarios processes in multiple global regions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Responding to global change: A theory of change approach to making agricultural research for development outcome-based
Philip K. Thornton,Tonya Schuetz,Wiebke Förch,Laura Cramer,Laura Cramer,David Abreu,Sonja J. Vermeulen,Bruce M. Campbell,Bruce M. Campbell +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an approach based on the theory of change is proposed for agricultural research for development, which combines indicators of progress in research along with indicators of change aimed at understanding the factors that enable or inhibit the behavioural changes that can bring about development impacts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Scaling up agricultural interventions: Case studies of climate-smart agriculture
TL;DR: In this article, eleven case studies are used to exemplify scaling-up strategies based on value chains and private sector involvement, information and communication technologies and agro-advisory services, and policy engagement.
