DISCUS: an end-to-end solution for ubiquitous broadband optical access
Marco Ruffini,Lena Wosinska,Mohand Achouche,Jiajia Chen,Nick Doran,Farsheed Farjady,Julio Montalvo,Peter Ossieur,Barry O'Sullivan,Nick Parsons,Thomas Pfeiffer,Xing-Zhi Qiu,Christian Raack,Harald Rohde,Marco Schiano,Paul D. Townsend,Roland Wessäly,Xin Yin,David B. Payne +18 more
TL;DR: The network architecture and the supporting technologies behind DISCUS are described, giving an overview of the concepts and methodologies that will be used to deliver the end-to-end network solution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Redundancy strategies for a high splitting optically amplified passive optical network
A.J. Phillips,John M. Senior,R. Mercinelli,M. Valvo,Peter Vetter,Claire Martin,M.O. van Deventer,Peter Vaes,Xing-Zhi Qiu +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated redundancy and protection in high splitting, optically amplified, passive optical networks (SuperPONs) in terms of redundancy provision and protection mechanisms, including the important special case of dual homing and determined as to which of these options (duplication of the feeder and first distribution section, and N+1 protection of the optical amplifiers in the amplified splitter) would be required to be provided to all attached users to facilitate appropriate availability of the basic telephony service.

Long Reach Passive Optical Networks
Paul D. Townsend,Giuseppe Talli,Chi-Wai Chow,E.M. MacHale,Cleitus Antony,R. Davey,T. De Ridder,Xing-Zhi Qiu,Peter Ossieur,H.G. Krimmel,David Smith,Ian Francis Lealman,Alistair James Poustie,Sebastian Randel,Harald Rohde +14 more
TL;DR: This paper is a tutorial reviewing research and development performed over the last few years to extend the reach of passive optical networks using technology such as optical amplifiers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of GPON upstream physical-media-dependent prototypes
Xing-Zhi Qiu,Peter Ossieur,Johan Bauwelinck,Yanchun Yi,Dieter Verhulst,Jan Vandewege,B. De Vos,P. Solina +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a burst-mode optical transmitter, an avalanche photodiode/transimpedance amplifier (APD-TIA), and a burstmode optical receiver are presented for point-to-multipoint (P2MP) upstream transmission in a high-performance GPON at 1.25 Gb/s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Demonstration of a 32 $\,\times\,$ 512 Split, 100 km Reach, 2 $\,\times\,$ 32 $\,\times\,$ 10 Gb/s Hybrid DWDM-TDMA PON Using Tunable External Cavity Lasers in the ONUs
Peter Ossieur,Cleitus Antony,Alan Naughton,A. M. Clarke,H.-G Krimmel,Xin Yin,Xing-Zhi Qiu,C. Ford,A. Borghesani,D.G. Moodie,Alistair James Poustie,R. Wyatt,B. Harmon,Ian Francis Lealman,G. Maxwell,D. Rogers,David Smith,Sylvia Smolorz,Harald Rohde,Derek Nesset,R. Davey,P. D. Townsend +21 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid DWDM-TDM optical access network that provides a route for integrating access and metro net-works into a single all-optical system is presented.
