Journal ArticleDOI
Suppression of nitric oxide-induced apoptosis by n-acetyl-l-cysteine through modulation of glutathione, bcl-2, and bax protein levels
TL;DR: The results suggest that the protective effect of LNAC may be linked to its inducement of increases in cellular GSH and bcl‐2 protein levels and to its suppression of cellular bax protein in treated cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microtubule damaging agents induce apoptosis in HL 60 cells and G2/M cell cycle arrest in HT 29 cells
Chia-Jen Tseng,Ying Jan Wang,Yu-Chih Liang,Jiiang-Huei Jeng,Wen Sen Lee,Jen-Kun Lin,Chien-Ho Chen,I-Chun Liu,Yuan Soon Ho +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the occurrence of apoptosis or G2/M cell cycle arrest induced by microtubule damaging agents in different cancer cells was through independent mechanisms, and activation of c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway may play an important role in the PDP-induced Bcl-2 phosphorylation and apoptosis in HL 60 cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
An apple a day to prevent cancer formation: Reducing cancer risk with flavonoids
TL;DR: This review summarizes the molecular mechanism(s) of various components in apple, as established in previous studies that indicated their growth-inhibitory effects in various cancer cell types and delineates the direction of future studies that could lead to the development of apple components as a potent chemopreventive/chemotherapeutic agent against cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative modification of DNA bases in rat liver and lung during chemical carcinogenesis and aging
TL;DR: Elevated amounts of modified DNA bases were found in most cancerous tissues when compared to the controls, and the association of the modified bases with the processes of aging and carcinogenesis deserves further investigation.
Journal Article
Involvement of protein kinase C-gamma in IL-1beta-induced cyclooxygenase-2 expression in human pulmonary epithelial cells.
Chien-Huang Lin,Sheng Yuan Sheu,Horng Mo Lee,Yuan Soon Ho,Wen Sen Lee,Wun-Chang Ko,Joen Rong Sheu +6 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that in human pulmonary epithelial cells, IL-1β might activate phosphatidylcholine-phospholipase C through an upstream tyrosine phosphorylation to elicit PKC activation, which in turn initiates NF-κB activation, and finally induces COX-2 expression and PGE2 release.
