Abstract: There has been a growth in the design and use of power assist devices for manual wheelchairs (MWCs) to alleviate the physical load of MWC use. A pushrim-activated power-assisted wheel (PAPAW) is an example of a power assist device that replaces the conventional wheel of a MWC. Although the use of PAPAWs provides some benefits to MWC users, it can also cause difficulties in maneuvering the wheelchair. In this research, we examined the characteristics of wheelchair propulsion when using manual and powered wheels. We used the left and right wheels’ angular velocity to calculate the linear and angular velocity of the wheelchair. Results of this analysis revealed that the powered wheel’s controller is not optimally designed to reflect the intentions of a wheelchair user. To address some of the challenges with coordinating the pushes on PAPAWs, we proposed the design of a user-intention detection framework. We used the kinematic data of MWC experiments and tested six supervised learning algorithms to classify one of four movements: “not moving”, “moving straight forward”, “turning left”, and “turning right”. We found that all the classification algorithms determined the type of movement with high accuracy and low computation time. The proposed intention detection framework can be used in the design of learning-based controllers for PAPAWs that take into account the individualized characteristics of wheelchair users. Such a system may improve the experience of PAPAW users.

Abstract: Biological development depends on the coordinated expression of genes in time and space. Developmental genes have extensive cis-regulatory regions which control their expression. These regions are organized in a modular manner, with different modules controlling expression at different times and locations. Both how modularity evolved and what function it serves are open questions. We present a computational model for the cis-regulation of the hunchback (hb) gene in the fruit fly (Drosophila). We simulate evolution (using an evolutionary computation approach from computer science) to find the optimal cis-regulatory arrangements for fitting experimental hb expression patterns. We find that the cis-regulatory region tends to readily evolve modularity. These cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) do not tend to control single spatial domains, but show a multi-CRM/multi-domain correspondence. We find that the CRM-domain correspondence seen in Drosophila evolves with a high probability in our model, supporting the biological relevance of the approach. The partial redundancy resulting from multi-CRM control may confer some biological robustness against corruption of regulatory sequences. The technique developed on hb could readily be applied to other multi-CRM developmental genes.

Abstract: Concrete structures are almost certain to contain cracks due to different physiochemical mechanisms. The formation of cracks is sure to affect its durability by altering ion and fluid transport properties. This includes the incursion of CO2 into the structure. There presently exists no consensus on how to model the effects of structural cracking on carbonation progress within concrete structures. This paper first examines the concept of effective diffusion based on simultaneous diffusion of CO2 through sound and cracked concrete and then considers a series diffusion concept where CO2 diffuses first into the crack, and then outwards into the sound concrete. It is concluded that the effective diffusion concept is not valid for structurally cracked concrete. Instead, research efforts should be concentrated on developing a two–phase series diffusion model.
