TL;DR: In this article, the functionalization of carbon black surface with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating sites and subsequent ATRP of n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) and t-BA from the surface of carbon-black is reported.
Abstract: The functionalization of carbon black surface with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating sites and subsequent ATRP of n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) and t-butyl acrylate (t-BA) from the surface of carbon black is reported. The polymerizations were carried out using CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the primary catalytic system in anisole at 70 °C. The initiator density on carbon black surface was tuned and the effect of initiator density on the polymers grafted on the surface was illustrated. Polymerizations were also performed in the presence of a sacrificial initiator to indirectly monitor the molecular weight evolution of polymers formed in the system. Block copolymerization of t-BA initiated from poly(n-BA) grafted carbon black was conducted to achieve water-dispersible carbon black composites after cleavage of the t-butyl groups. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TL;DR: In this paper, the angular sputter emission measurements are consistent with emission from tantalum single crystals along the 〈111〉 close packed direction as well as the second close-packed ǫ-100  direction.
Abstract: Sputtering target crystallographic orientation affects film deposition uniformity through the emission trajectories of the sputtered atoms. Understanding the relationship between the crystallographic orientation of the sputtering target and the emission trajectory for the sputtered atoms is important for being able to accurately model film thickness uniformity and step coverage. This paper describes the measurement of atom sputter trajectory from a tantalum single crystal. A quartz crystal monitor is used to detect sputter atom flux as a function of angle. The angular sputter emission measurements are consistent with emission from tantalum single crystals along the 〈111〉 close-packed direction as well as the second close-packed 〈100〉 direction. Best fit of the experimental data occurs when the ratio of the emission probabilities in the 〈111〉 and 〈100〉 directions (P〈111〉/P〈100〉) is 1.4, and the ratio of the major and minor axis for the sputter emission ellipsoid (the b/a ratio) is 1.5.

Abstract: A method for non-destructively detecting the presence of banded regions in a metal is described. The method involves sending an ultrasonic wave into the metal and obtaining reflected signals. The reflected signals are compared with each other to determine variations in signal intensity. A banded region within the metal can be observed as a weaker reflected signal than a reflected backwall signal, thus accurately identifying a location of banding within the metal. Metal articles with a low percent of banding are also described.
