TL;DR: The premature at 40 weeks of gestational age has not attained a level of organization as high as that of the full-term newborn, and an hypothesis suggesting a possible mechanism of this discrepancy is presented.
Abstract: The ontogenesis of sleep was studied in prematures from 32 to 41 weeks of gestational age The characteristics of the EEG, the patterns and rate of respiration, the cardiac rate, body motility comprised of localized and diffuse movements, localized and diffuse jerks, clonic movements and electromyo-graphic activity of the chin, as well as periods of total quietness were observed and correlated with the progressive organization of behavior in these infants. The data obtained at each gestational age, i.e., at 32–34 weeks, 35–37 weeks, and 38–41 weeks, were compared to those obtained in full-term newborns. The relationships between the different events and the features of the EEG and of the respiratory patterns were ascertained and compared to similar data obtained in the full-term newborn. This comparison shows that the premature at 40 weeks of gestational age has not attained a level of organization as high as that of the full-term newborn. An hypothesis suggesting a possible mechanism of this discrepancy is presented.

TL;DR: Heteroimmunization of rabbits with saline or perchloric extracts of colonic cancers permits the detection of two cancer‐related antigens, but their concentration is much weaker than in intestinal tumours.
Abstract: Heteroimmunization of rabbits with saline or perchloric extracts of colonic cancers permits the detection of two cancer-related antigens. These antigens may be demonstrated, by direct precipitin reaction, in saline extracts of colonic or rectal adenocarcinomata, of some gastric cancers, and of foetal gut, but not in saline extracts of the non-cancerous adult digestive system. However, precipitin-inhibition reaction shows these antigens in perchloric extracts of non-cancerous colonic mucosa but their concentration is much weaker than in intestinal tumours. Detection of a small amount of these antigens in non-cancerous colonic mucosa implies that they are cancer-related, but not cancer-specific. Identity of one of the antigens with Gold's carcinoembryonic antigen is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, auteurs rapportent 2 cases of DNAI and discuss the aspects morphologiques, the nature glycolipoproteique and the repartition topographique des spheroides, electivement disposes dans les structures medullaires.

TL;DR: The reaction of older rats brings to evidence a permanent inhibitory mechanism that results in a less regular and intensive response that seems to be correlated with the production of binucleated and polyploÏd hepatocytes.
Abstract: The injection of irritating substances of various chemical nature disturbs the mechanisms regulating the multiplication of rat hepatocytes. The reaction of baby rats is intense and reproducible. It results, 15 hours after the injection, in an increase of the number of cells entering the S phase, so that practically all the divisions which would normally have been scattered over 36 hours are initiated within 2 hours. This burst of synchronized mitosis corresponding to a 36 hours advance in the hepatic growth is followed by a decrease of mitoses due to a feed-back inhibition. The reaction of older rats brings to evidence a permanent inhibitory mechanism that results in a less regular and intensive response. The production of binucleated and polyploId hepatocytes seems to be correlated to this inhibitory mechanism. The regularity and sensivity of the baby rat reactions make them a choice material for the study of hepatic growth.

TL;DR: The injection of irritating substances of various chemical nature disturbs the mechanisms regulating the multiplication of rat hepatocytes, resulting in an increase of the number of cells entering the S phase, so that practically all the divisions which would normally have been scattered over 36 hours are initiated within 2 hours.

TL;DR: Evaluation of the various parameters of Laser irradiation resulted in optimal irradiation times for measurement of local stain concentration, as well as for the selective destruction of the stained mitochondria.
Abstract: — Laser micro-irradiation was used to study the uptake of low levels of strain (Janus Green B) by the mitochondria of tissue culture cells and the selective lesions induced by the irradiation. A comparison of the thermal effects produced in the cells and in a stained model system (albumin), permitted the calculation of the degree of concentration of stain in the mitochondria from the staining media (approximately 500 fold). Evaluation of the various parameters of Laser irradiation, particularly thermal events, resulted in optimal irradiation times for measurement of local stain concentration, as well as for the selective destruction of the stained mitochondria. For the studies of the latter phenomenon a lower limit for irradiation duration is set by optical saturation and dielectric breakdown.

TL;DR: This work has suggested the existence of abnormal alleles leading to an impaired synthesis of the heavy chains of one or several immunoglobulins in agammaglobulinaemia.
Abstract: SEVERAL research units have studied the genetic mechanisms controlling the synthesis of immunoglobulins and its alteration in hypogammaglobulinaemia. Fudenberg et al.1 investigated Gm and Inv groups in families with agammaglobulinaemia, and suggested the involvement of two genes in the synthesis of an immunoglobulin: one controlling the synthesis of the heavy chains, the other that of the light chains. Burtin et al.2 applied the same principle in their studies on “non sex-linked atypic hypogammaglobulinaemia”, and postulated the existence of abnormal alleles leading to an impaired synthesis of the heavy chains of one or several immunoglobulins.

TL;DR: Patients with chronic bronchitis and/or pulmonary emphysema with borderline pulmonary artery Eressure and arterial blood gases have been submitted to aemodynamic studies in order to compare changes in the pulmonary circulation brought about by leg exercise and by voluntary hyperventilation with comparable breathing rate, tidal volume and arterIAL blood gases during both periods.
Abstract: (1) Twelve patients with chronic bronchitis and/or pulmonary emphysema with borderline pulmonary artery Eressure and arterial blood gases have been submitted to aemodynamic studies in order to compare changes in the pulmonary circulation brought about by leg exercise and by voluntary hyperventilation with comparable breathing rate, tidal volume and arterial blood gases during both periods. (2) Minute ventilation (Exercise: 12.1 ± 1.9 l. min-l m-2; hyperventilation: 12.8± 1.8 1 · min-1· m-2), breathing rate (E: 22.6 ±3.4, H: 23.5 ±3.8), percentage arterial oxygen saturation (E: 94.7±3.3%, H: 95.9±2.7%) and carbon dioxide tension (E: 45.5 ± 5.1 mm Hg, H: 46.8 ± 5.1 mm Hg) did not differ significantly during exercise and hyperventilation, thus suggesting that both mechanical forces acting upon intrathoracic structures and pulmonary vasomotor tone were comparable. (3) During exercise pulmonary arterial mean pressure (31.4±5.7mm Hg) and pulmonary wedge pressure (13.2± 4.2 mm Hg) rose significantly (p < 0.001) and consistently. During hyperventilation pulmonary arterial mean pressure rose slightly (22.1 ± 5.5 mm Hg, p < 0.05) and the increase in average pulmonary wedge pressure was insignificant (10.0±5.4 mm Hg), although the latter rose markedly in five cases. Pulmonary vascular resistances were not consistently modified. Pulmonary wedge pressure was not correlated with minute ventilation but was positively correlated with the amplitude of respiratory variations in intrathoracic pressure. (4) Thus, our data suggested that the rise in pulmonary artery and wedge pressures during exercise was due to the combined effects of large intrathoracic pressure swings and of an increase in the haemodynamic load of the left ventricle.
