TL;DR: A 50-year-old female school teacher presented with a 7-year history of airborne contact dermatitis and gave a history of exacerbations and remissions, and has been symptom-free for 2 months with no side-effects.
Abstract: A 50-year-old female school teacher presented with a 7-year history of airborne contact dermatitis. Although she gave a history of exacerbations and remissions, she had never been symptom-free. As Parthenzum hysterophorus was known to grow m abundance at her place of work, a diagnoSIS of Parthemum dermatitiS was made and confirmed by patch testmg with a small piece of leaf. Treatment with chloroqume for 1 month and phototherapy for a month with 8-methoxypsoralen was meffective. She subsequently developed erythroderma and was hospitalized and treated with systemic stermds, antihistammes and topical emollients. After a week, when oral predmsolone was reduced to 5 mg per day, she was given orally 0.1 mg of dned, crushed, finely powdered Parthenzum leaf, diluted m maize starch and dispensed m corn starch capsules, once daily, with her mformed consent. After 1 week, the dose was mcreased to 0.5 mg and then to I mg after a further week. When the dose of Parthemum was mcreased to I mg, sterOids were discontmued. She was discharged on I mg Parthemum orally and seen monthly. At the next visit, she was symptom-free but returned 1-l months later with a mild relapse. She had run out of capsules for 15 days and had developed symptoms 10 days after discontinumg them. Treatment was restarted and she has been symptom-free for 2 months w1th no side-effects.

TL;DR: Five members of a Hindu family affected by Treacher-Collins syndrome spanning three generations are examined in detail, with special reference to their hearing.
Abstract: The major congenital malformations of the first and second branchial arch derivatives such as mandibulofacial dysostosis have a genetic basis. Treacher-Collins syndrome is transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, although many cases occur as spontaneous mutations. The characteristics are hypoplasia of the malar, mandibular and maxillary bones, antimongoloid slanting of the palpebral fissures and a receding chin. The aural findings include malpositioning or maldevelopment of the pinna or external auditory meatus, an atretic bony plate instead of tympanic membrane, or ossicular malformations. Five members of a Hindu family affected by Treacher-Collins syndrome spanning three generations are examined in detail, with special reference to their hearing.

TL;DR: A case of mephentermine dependence associated with chronic psychosis is reported here, where the patient initially surfaced with chronic dexamphetamine abuse, but was sustained for 3 years by me phentermine.
Abstract: Dependence on mephentermine, a widely used sympathomimetic pressor agent, is so far unreported, although misuse of inhalers is recognised. A case of mephentermine dependence associated with chronic psychosis is reported here. Psychosis initially surfaced with chronic dexamphetamine abuse, but was sustained for 3 years by mephentermine. After a period of remission lasting for 4 years, the patient again developed psychosis on restarting abuse of mephentermine, which lasted for 5 years.

TL;DR: Female workers employed in the cashew nut industry in Karnataka to slice off the outer hard shells from the nuts and thus exposed to the chashew nut shell oil had a characteristic cauterization type of reaction manifesting as brownish-black, thickened sheets of dead skin covering the dorsal as well as the palmar aspects of hands including the fingers and feet.
Abstract: Seventy five female workers employed in the cashew nut industry in Karnataka to slice off the outer hard shells from the nuts and thus exposed to the chashew nut shell oil had a characteristic cauterization type of reaction manifesting as brownish-black, thickened sheets of dead skin covering the dorsal as well as the palmar aspects of hands including the fingers and feet. Smaller but similer lesions were also seen on these parts of the forearms, abdomen, neck and face which were not covered with clothes. The fingers were thinned and tapering and several nails of the hands and feet were thickened, discolored and eaten away. The other changes included loss of the dermatoglyphic patterns, maceration of the hands, small pits on the finger tips and pitted keratolysis seen in some cases only. Similar changes were also seen on the feet of both the male workers exposed to the same oil, in the section which extracts the oil from the sliced shells. In contrast 29, feamle wokers engaged to peel off the thin reddish covering on the cashew nut had normal hands and feet, except for the two callosities on the flexural aspect of the proximal phalanx of the right middle finger and proximal interphalangeal joint of the right index finger respectively, caused by the friction of the peeling knife. An open patch test with the cashew nut shell oil used as such in 17 workers produced a cauterization type of reaction in 32 workers irrespective of the nature of their duties, while the standard occluded patch test with 10% cashew nut shell oil in polyethylene glycol showed a mild cauterization type of reaction in only 6 workers. Patch tests with 1% and 0.1% concentrations of the shell oil were negative in all the workers. Two barrier creams tested to protect the workers from the cashew nut shell oil produced reasonably effective results within a week.

TL;DR: Dose-matched comparison between zinc-salt of enfenamic acid and the parent compound was carried out in experimentally wounded male albino rats bearing either sutured incision, dead-space or excision wounds and showed that en Fenamic-acid significantly decreased breaking-strength of incision wounds.
Abstract: Dose-matched comparison between zinc-salt of enfenamic acid and the parent compound was carried out in experimentally wounded male albino rats bearing either sutured incision, dead-space or excision wounds. Result showed that enfenamic-acid significantly decreased breaking-strength of incision wounds and this effects was totally reversed by zinc present in enfenamic acid-zinc salt. Both the parent compound and the salt had significant granulation suppressant effect in dead-space wounds. In excision wounds epithelization was enhanced by enfenamic acid only. The wound contraction was not affected by either test compound.

TL;DR: The study confirms that Apo-A level is highly related to the degree of liver injury and suggests that this decrease may be mainly due to impaired liver synthesis and that the serum levels of ApO-A and Api-B can be utilized in the differential diagnosis of chronic liver diseases.

TL;DR: Most infants who became HBsAg positive during the first 6 months of life acquire infection in the perinatal period rather than transplacentally, and this antibody thus cannot be used as an indicator of transplacental infection.
Abstract: The significance of IgM and IgG class antibodies to hepatitis B virus (HBV) core component (anti-HBc) was investigated in a study of maternal-fetal HBV transmission. An IgM anti-HBc response was lacking in the majority (49/53) of HBV-infected infants. This antibody thus cannot be used as an indicator of transplacental infection. However, most infants who became HBsAg positive during the first 6 months of life acquire infection in the perinatal period rather than transplacentally. Passively transferred maternal IgG anti-HBc in the infant and additional IgM anti-HBc positively in the carrier mother have no modulating influence on HBV infection of infants born to HBV carrier women.

TL;DR: It is concluded that both operative and non-operative management give acceptable results in subtrochanteric fractures of the femur but the latter is indicated in Seinsheimer Type 3A fractures.
Abstract: In this retrospective study, 38 subtrochanteric fractures of the femur, managed by operative and non-operative methods were analysed and the results compared. Excluding three pathological fractures, 12 fractures were internally fixed and 23 were treated in traction. In 83.3 per cent of fractures treated operatively and 82.6 per cent treated non-operatively, excellent or good results were obtained. Poor results in traction were due to associated head injury and failure to comply with the position required to maintain alignment. Poor results in the operative group were in the Seinsheimer Type 3A with poor medial buttress. We conclude that both operative and non-operative management give acceptable results in subtrochanteric fractures of the femur but the latter is indicated in Seinsheimer Type 3A fractures.

TL;DR: The sum of the reduction in temperature at all times significantly favoured patients who had been given dipyrone, and the area under the time–temperature curves was significantly greater for patients given Dipyrone.
Abstract: In a double-blind study in patients with typhoid fever 25 patients received 500 mg dipyrone and 28 received 500 mg paracetamol. Rectal temperature and pulse records were monitored every 30 min. The onset of anti-pyresis in patients given dipyrone (30 min) was significantly different from those given paracetamol (1 h). The area under the time-temperature curves was significantly greater for patients given dipyrone. The sum of the reduction in temperature at all times significantly favoured patients who had been given dipyrone. Both treatments were well tolerated.

TL;DR: Investigators studied malnutrition among 24 children ages 18-60 months from Karnataka State India--a coastal fishing village, finding adequate protein and vitamin A intake is probably due to consumption of large amounts of fish and spinach and is in contrast to the rest of India.
Abstract: Investigators studied malnutrition among 24 children ages 18-60 months from Karnataka State India--a coastal fishing village. 8 children were normally nourished 8 were mildly malnourished and 8 were moderately malnourished. Fish tea or coffee proteins and vitamin A intake was adequate among all groups. Vegetable cereal caloric mineral and B-complex vitamin intake was inadequate among all groups. Iron intake was significantly lower (P<0.025) among malnourished children. Caloric consumption was lower in mildly (P<0.005) and moderately (P<0.001) malnourished children. Adequate protein and vitamin A intake is probably due to consumption of large amounts of fish and spinach and is in contrast to the rest of India. Iron and caloric deficiency can easily be remedied by increasing intake of green leafy vegetables and cereals.
