TL;DR: The study suggests that use of a narcotic in an intravenous sedative technique increases the hazard of aspiration and that tracheal soiling is lower than that with other intravenous techniques.
Abstract: The Jorgensen technique and nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation were evaluated for the risk of aspiration Participants were studied in the supine, semisupine, and Trendelenburg positions Use of a narcotic in an intravenous sedative technique increases the hazard of aspiration In a study of the risk of aspiration in nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation and the Jorgensen technique, aspiration occurred in one patient under the latter It could be attributed to the presence of a narcotic in the mixture No depression of the laryngeal reflex occurred in participants in the supine and semisupine positions who were given nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia

TL;DR: Comparing the durability of two resin coating materials used on two brands of composite restorative materials showed that composites glazed with resin coating finishes at placement maintained their luster, color match, and surface smoothness significantly better after one year than composites that were not coated.
Abstract: Composite restorations coated with resin finishes had better color match, luster, and smoothness after one year than did uncoated restorations. Two resin finish coatings used on two brands of composite restorative materials were compared for durability, A study of restorations in 52 patients compared color match, luster, and smoothness of two finishes. After one year, the color match was significantly better than the uncoated composites as were the luster and smoothness of the surfaces of the coated restorations.

TL;DR: Two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, who had striking angiographic abnormalities of venous contour, are presented and postmortem examination of one patient led to a histological explanation of the venous changes observed radiologically.
Abstract: Two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, who had striking angiographic abnormalities of venous contour, are presented. Both cases also had communicating hydrocephalus. Postmortem examination of one patient led to a histological explanation of the venous changes observed radiologically. Previous radiological reports have shown involvement of arteries but not veins with lupus erythematosus. The angiographic signs of phlebitis may signify a meningeal reaction which, when combined with ventricular enlargement, should suggest communicating hydrocephalus.

TL;DR: An unusual case of congenital cervico‐mediastinal thymic cyst with vocal cord paralysis is presented together with a brief history and classification of these cysts.
Abstract: An unusual case of congenital cervico-mediastinal thymic cyst with vocal cord paralysis is presented together with a brief history and classification of these cysts. A discussion of thymic cyst symptomatology and the surgical approach to these lesions is included. Simple thymic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cervico-mediastinal masses, particularly in children and young adults.

TL;DR: A model for multiple episodes of transient ischemia in which changes in the redox level of cytochrome a , a 3 , relative blood volume changes, tissue oxygen availability, and electrocorticographic activity were monitored simultaneously found that impairment of cerebral metabolism was observed prior to major vascular changes and the impairment worsened with increased duration and number of ischemic insults.

TL;DR: The present report describes the effect of various dosages and treatment regimens of ribavirin on the delayed hypersensitivity reaction, namely the survival time of rabbit skin allografts.
Abstract: The broad spectrum antiviral agent ribavirin (Virazole@, l-P-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4,-triazole-3-carboxamide) has recently attracted considerable attention because of the beneficial results seen from treatment of certain viral infections with ribavirin in laboratory animals and also clinically.l-6 Several papers in this volume present such data. Although the precise mechanism of action of the drug is still not fully known, it has been demonstrated that ribavirin inhibits DNA synthesis in virally infected and noninfected cells in cell c ~ l t u r e . ~ This finding has prompted several investigators to determine the immunosuppressive activity of the agent. Two groups have shown that high concentrations of ribavirin suppress the primary immune response of mice when injected with sheep red blood cell^.^^^ It has also been shown that ferrets infected with influenza virus and treated with the drug have reduced antibody titers to the viral antigen.\"' However, other workers have not been able to demonstrate significant immunosuppressive activity.\" We therefore felt that additional investigation was warranted using a different model. The present report describes the effect of various dosages and treatment regimens of ribavirin on the delayed hypersensitivity reaction, namely the survival time of rabbit skin allografts.

TL;DR: The in vitro results demonstrated that methyl substitution at positions 2,3 and 5 on the benzene ring produced a compound of slightly more anesthetic potency in an acid medium, indicating thatethyl substitution at other than the ortho position of the benzenes generally results in compounds of lesser local anesthetic activity while tending to increase the toxicity.

TL;DR: The broad spectrum antiviral agent ribavirin (Virazolb) also has antitumor activity as discussed by the authors, which has shown that repeated administration of the drug significantly increased survivors of spontaneous leukemia in AKR/J female mice.
Abstract: The broad spectrum antiviral agent ribavirin (Virazolb), which has activity against both DNA and RNA' viruses, also has antitumor activity. Randhawa and coworkers have shown that repeated administration of the drug significantly increased survivors of spontaneous leukemia in AKR/J female mice.2 Bekesi and coworkers also have shown the effectiveness of ribavirin in AKR leukemia when used in combination with cytoreductive the rap^.^ In light of these studies we decided to take a look at another murine leukemia, namely, the L1210 form in DBA/2 mice. Law and coworkers in 1949 induced this leukemia by painting skin with methylcholanthrene.' However, several workers have described viral antigen and viral particles in L1210 ~ells.~-'O We therefore felt that studies using ribavirin on L1210 leukemic in vivo werejustified.

Abstract: FOR centuries the only roads in Guatemala were no more than trails--slippery and muddy during rainy seasons, dry and dusty during dry seasons, and always treacherous. Travelers who ventured outside the few cities and towns usually walked or rode horses or mules. Freight traveled similarly, on the backs of pack animals or on the backs of men. Consequently, communications were at a minimum; Guatemalans and other Central Americans were isolated. And if they had little communication among themselves, they had less with foreigners. The few ports touched occasionally by foreign ships offered little in the way of trade because of the difficulty of transportation to and from the interior. Under conditions such as these it is no wonder

TL;DR: The present study investigates the annual per capita consumption of alcohol and the annual incidence of suicide in California for each year between 1961 and 1974 and provides a correlation between a state-wide suicidal and a general population.
Abstract: Studies routinely link suicide with the consumption of alcohol although the relationship between these two variables has not been clearly delineated. Shneidman and Farberow (1961) indicated that 18% of their subjects had ingested some alcohol prior to their deaths. Andress (1976) in an analysis of suicides for 15 yr. found that 32.7% of the cases had consumed some measurable amount of alcohol before killing themselves. Over half of these individuals (18.4% of the total suicide population) had enough alcohol in their blood at autopsy to have been considered legally intoxicated at the time of their deaths. In a study by Perlin, Schmidt, and Stephens (1972), problems with alcohol were ranked second only to prior suicide attempts as a predictor of suicide potential. The present study investigated the annual per capita consumption of alcohol and the annual incidence of suicide in California for each year between 1961 and 1974. A significant relationship between the rate of apparent alcohol consumption (in gallons per capita) and the annual suicide rate (per 100,000) was indicated by a Pearson productmoment correlation of .G6 (t = 3.04, df = 12, p < .01). An annual increase or decrease in one rate was reflected by a concomitant variation in the same direction in the other rate. While previous liceramre has described the relationship of alcohol and suicide within suicidal populations, the present study provides a correlation between a state-wide suicidal and a general population.

TL;DR: Compared coroner- and psychologist-assigned motives in 166 suicides committed in Riverside County, California between January, 1973 and June, 1974, a Spearman's rank-order correlation of .81 between motives assigned by coroners and psychologists was obtained.
Abstract: Summary.-The accuracy of information contained in coroners' records of suicide obviously affects the validity of data reported in ex post facto suicide studies. The reliability of coroner-assigned suicide motives has been questioned by Shneidman and Farberow (1961) on the basis that coroners' investigators lack sophistication in behavioral research methodology. Andress (1976) suggested that coroners tend to over-assign the motive of Depression/Despondency because they view suicide as a symptom of depression. The present study compared coroner- and psychologist-assigned motives in I66 suicides committed in Riverside County, California between January, 1973 and June, 1974. A Spearman's rank-order correlation of .81 between motives assigned by coroners and psychologists was obtained. Depression was assigned by coroners significantly more often than by the psychologists. The psychologists assigned marital difficulties and sexual problems significantly more often than did coroners. Because of a high percentage of interobserver agreement, it is suggested that more coofi
