TL;DR: In this paper, the authors draw on labor economics, sociological, and agency theoretical perspectives to make predictions regarding the use of screening-oriented recruitment messages in actual web-based job advertisements.
Abstract: The ability of firms to attract qualified job applicants is a critical component of the human resource management process. However, while a large body of research has examined the relationship between firm recruitment practices and applicant pool attributes, very little research has investigated what factors are associated with organizational decision makers' utilization of specific recruitment tactics. We draw on labor economics, sociological, and agency theoretical perspectives to make predictions regarding the use of screening-oriented recruitment messages in actual web-based job advertisements. Results suggest that perceptions of labor supply, recruiting firm reputation, and the use of quality-based compensation incentives are associated with use of screening-oriented messages, which in turn are associated with applicant pool quality. These findings hold important theoretical insights into the factors shaping firm recruitment activity and provide practical strategic implications for managing firm recruitment objectives. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

TL;DR: The authors investigated the continued relevance of the 30-year-old Kogut and Singh (KS) index of cultural distance, highlighting the relevance of cultural differences in IB and argued that simplistic replications of the original arguments and index have prevented us from progressing towards a better understanding of how cross-national differences matter.
Abstract: This Counterpoint investigates the continued relevance of the 30-year-old Kogut and Singh (KS) index of cultural distance. KS was a seminal contribution, highlighting the relevance of cultural differences in IB. However, since then, simplistic replications of the original arguments and index have prevented us from progressing towards a better understanding of how cross-national differences matter. We discuss the mechanisms underlying the construct and how they relate to the algorithm, data, and its critiques. We call for more theoretically informed approaches, highlighting the underlying mechanisms, and specifying which data and algorithms best capture those mechanisms in each research context.

TL;DR: In this paper, a high-dimensional Gaussian copula model with asymmetric margins was used to produce forecast densities with the scope for severe departures from symmetry, and the copula parameter matrix was given by the correlation matrix of a latent stationary and Markov vector autoregression (VAR).
Abstract: Most existing reduced-form macroeconomic multivariate time series models employ elliptical disturbances, so that the forecast densities produced are symmetric. In this article, we use a copula model with asymmetric margins to produce forecast densities with the scope for severe departures from symmetry. Empirical and skew t distributions are employed for the margins, and a high-dimensional Gaussian copula is used to jointly capture cross-sectional and (multivariate) serial dependence. The copula parameter matrix is given by the correlation matrix of a latent stationary and Markov vector autoregression (VAR). We show that the likelihood can be evaluated efficiently using the unique partial correlations, and estimate the copula using Bayesian methods. We examine the forecasting performance of the model for four U.S. macroeconomic variables between 1975:Q1 and 2011:Q2 using quarterly real-time data. We find that the point and density forecasts from the copula model are competitive with those from a Bayesian ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the likely impact of e-commerce and the Internet on the Australian economy and present evidence for the renewal of Australian economy, especially the question of whether Australia has enjoyed increases in productivity as a result of the production and or use of new information and communications technology.
Abstract: This paper considers the likely impact of e-commerce and the Internet on the Australian economy. It surveys literature on the extent and development of e-commerce in Australia and its impact on the shape of the Australian economy. Evidence for the "renewal" of the Australian economy is presented and examined, especially the question of whether Australia has enjoyed increases in productivity as a result of the production and/or use of new information and communications technology. Australia is seen as broadly well placed to benefit from the Internet and e-commerce. Traditionally isolated from the world's main economic centres and reliant on commodities in international trade, the advent of the Internet is ideal for a country in transition to a service-orientated, knowledge-based economy. As the composition of Australia's exports becomes more service-orientated and knowledge-intensive, traditional trading links with Europe and North America may strengthen relative to those with Asia.
