Abstract: The growth-promoting and/or differentiation-blocking activities of Kirsten (Ki-MSV) or Harvey murine sarcoma virus (Ha-MSV) on various types of cells in vitro are well documented. Here we report an unexpected effect of these viruses on a rat phaeochromocytoma cell line, PC12. PC12 cells, which multiply indefinitely in growth medium, are known to respond to nerve growth factor (NGF) by cessation of cell division and expression of several properties resembling those of differentiated sympathetic neurones. We have found that Ki- and Ha-MSV mimic some, if not all, of the activities of NGF in PC12 cells, and there is evidence that the viral oncogenes, v-Ki-ras and v-Ha-ras, are responsible for this phenomenon. This system may be of value for studying the mechanism of action of the v-ras genes as well as the regulatory mechanism of growth and differentiation in neuronal cells.

Abstract: Two poly(L-proline)-binding proteins (PBP-1 and PBP-2) were purified from chick embryos by using a poly(L-proline)-agarose column. PBP-1 was composed of two different polypeptides (molecular masses of 42 kDa and 15 kDa). The molar ratio of the two proteins in the complex was 1:1. The other poly(L-proline)-binding protein, PBP-2, was the 15-kDa protein itself. The 42-kDa protein was confirmed to be an actin from the amino acid composition, by immunochemical evidence and by its ability to self-polymerize. In addition, the 42 + 15-kDa protein complex (PBP-1) inhibited DNase I, just as a monomeric actin did. The amino acid composition of the 15-kDa protein was similar to that of mammalian profilin and it inhibited the salt-induced polymerization of rabbit skeletal muscle actin. Therefore, we conclude that the two poly(L-proline)-binding proteins from the chick embryo are a profilactin and a profilin in chick embryo. The ability of profilactin to bind poly(L-proline) must be due to profilin itself, because the profilin has a greater affinity for poly(L-proline) than does profilactin. Additionally, both the monomeric and filamentous actin from rabbit skeletal muscle have no affinity for poly(L-proline).

Abstract: An improved video phone which transmits a source image over a standard telephone line in conjunction with audio voice signals is disclosed. The unique initialization protocol allows asynchronous transmission with its short format. The protocol format provides for a hardware preamble for synchronizing a receiver clock, a software preamble for identifying the video image and disabling the audio, automatic gain control adjustment data and amplitude calibration data. The audio portion is disabled by coupling a capacitor across the telephone to effectively short the telephone. The telephone is placed across the bridge circuit which is provided with switches to balance the bridge in both the telephone audio and the video modes. The transmitted as well as the received signal are passed through the same delay equalization circuit, so that half the delay equalization is done before transmission, with the remaining half being done after reception. The use of a multiplexer and demultiplexer allows the same circuit to be used. The digital signals are level shifted from 5 volts to 10 volts prior to being converted into analog, and then are level shifted down again to reduce the effects of DC offset. The digital and analog voltage supplies are coupled together with a resistor and diode, and a capacitor is coupled between the analog supply and ground to combine the reset and voltage supply functions. An RC circuit providing 180° of phase shift is coupled to the crystal oscillator to produce a clock which is locked into the series resonant frequency of the oscillator. The camera and the rest of the circuitry is turned on and off by a switch coupled to panel which can be slid in front of the camera, thus providing for the automatic protection of the camera lens when the system is switched off.

Abstract: Flammable fine particles (particulates) consisting principally of carbon and hydrocarbons are discharged from a diesel engine to its exhaust system. A diesel particulate oxidizer (DPO) is disposed in the exhaust passage for collecting and burning the particulates without allowing the particulates to be discharged directly to the atmosphere. This DPO comprises a ceramic foam with catalyst. When the quantity of particulates collected is above a predetermined value, the DPO will undergo clogging. To prevent this, a high temperature gas containing oxygen is fed to the DPO to burn (regenerate) the collected particulates. In order to accelerate the normal regeneration of the DPO, there are provided a regeneration means for making a retard control of the fuel injection timing in the diesel engine, and a regeneration timing control means for controlling the operation of the regeneration means. Further, there is provided a regeneration timing detection means for detecting the regeneration timing of the DPO.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an inspecting device for a print which can scan the entire print pattern (3') of a printed sheet (3) by an optical detecting device (8), detects the image information of the print pattern (3') at every pixel, calculates the difference between the detected image information with reference information, delays the differential signal in several pixels in the scanning direction of the optical detecting device (8), calculates the difference between the differential signal and the delayed differential signal, sets a threshold level to the twice differential signal produced from the result, and judges the production of a printing defect when the twice differential signal exceeds the threshold level, thereby accurately detecting the printing defect even when the entire variation in the color density occurs on the printed sheet (3).

Abstract: We have shown previously that Drosophila cells contain virus-like particles (VLPs) containing 5-kilobase (kb) RNA that hybridizes to a transposable element, termed copia. We have suggested that VLPs and copia are derivatives of viral particles and proviral forms, respectively, of 'copia' retrovirus, a putative Drosophila retrovirus. To further clarify the relationship between copia and copia-related RNA in VLPs (VLP H-RNA), we determined and compared their nucleotide sequences. VLP H-RNA was found to be an unspliced, genome-sized transcript of copia, and, like retroviral genome RNA, VLP H-RNA is terminally redundant with termini localized in the long terminal repeats (LTRs) of copia. VLP H-RNA contains two long open reading frames (ORFs), one of which includes the coding sequence for a predominant VLP protein of relative molecular mass (Mr) 31,000 (31K). Here we show that, in contrast to 17.6 ORF2, ORFs of copia have no extensive amino-acid sequence homology to the RT region of the reverse transcriptase of retrovirus in vertebrates. Because of a one-base insertion/deletion, the two ORFs in VLP H-RNA are fused and become a single, longer ORF in a genomic copia.

Abstract: Reverse gyrase, a topoisomerase which introduces positive superhelical turns into DNA, has been purified from Sulfolobus to near homogeneity. It is a single polypeptide with a mol. wt. of 120 000 as determined by denaturing gel electrophoresis. Contrary to a previous report, it is a type I topoisomerase as judged by the linking-number change of closed circular DNA topoisomer. Unlike other known type I topoisomerases, ATP or dATP is required for introducing positive superhelical turns. In order to relax negatively supercoiled DNA, other nucleotide triphosphates (XTP) are also effective with low efficiency. In the absence of either XTP or divalent cations, the enzyme introduces nicks into closed circular DNA when the reaction is stopped by SDS. This suggests that reverse gyrase cuts one of the two strands of DNA in the course of its enzymatic reaction.

Abstract: Ammonium fractions from a soil of a penguin rookery in Antarctica and from water of a pond in the rookery exhibit the highest 15N/14N ratios among biogenic nitrogen so far observed. Though soils of seabird rookeries appear, in general, to have high nitrogen isotope ratios, the still higher ratios make the penguin rookery stand out from other seabird rookeries. The observation suggests that ammonia volatilization is a cause of the 15N enrichment in the soil ammonium and that the Antarctic climate is particularly effective on 15N enrichment for ammonium remained in the soil and water.

Abstract: A blood oxygenator of the outside perfusion type using hollow fibers as the gas exchange membrane. In this blood oxygenator, a plurality of contact chambers each containing a bundle or bundles of hollow fibers for gas exchange use and communicating with a blood inlet and a blood outlet are disposed to make blood flow in multiple paths within a housing, and each bundle of hollow fibers is arranged so as to be substantially perpendicular to the direction of blood flow. In spite of its compact construction, this blood oxygenator has high oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange rates per unit of membrane even when used in the gas exchange of blood having high flow rate, exhibits only a small pressure loss, and causes little channeling of the blood and gas. Moreover, it is easy to manufacture because of its relatively simple structure.

Abstract: A discharge excitation type short pulse laser device which is constructed with first and second main electrodes disposed in confrontation with the direction of the laser beam axis as their longitudinal direction, an auxiliary electrode provided on the rear surface part of the second main electrode and opposed to the second main electrode through the dielectric member, a pulse circuit for applying a pulse voltage across the first and second main electrodes, and a circuit for applying a voltage across the auxiliary electrode and the second main electrode, the circuit forming a part of the pulse circuit, or being independent of the pulse circuit, wherein the second main electrode is made of an electrically conductive material having a plurality of apertures therein, the second main electrode and the dielectric member are disposed in tight adhesion each other, and the second main electrode is thinly formed to enable creeping discharge to be produced on the surface of the dielectric member, thereby distributing electrons to be the seed for the main discharge to be generated across the main electrode.

Abstract: We examined the possibility of chemical evolution in superheated hydrothermal environments and found the formation of microspheres at 250 degrees C and above from a mixture of glycine, alanine, valine, and aspartic acid. The microspheres did not form at lower temperatures and consisted of silicates and peptide-like polymers that contained imide bonds and amino acid residues having an abundance of valine. The results show the possibility of thermophilic cellular structures, which might be adopted by the extremely thermophilic organisms, if they exist, reported by Baross and Deming.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a stable operation and reduce a leakage of electricity so that an electric current between a source electrode and a drain electrode can be drastically changed by a gate voltage by causing a semiconductor layer to form an organic thin film having a specific thickness which is composed of pi-conjugated polymer, when conductivity of the above semiconductor layer serving as a current path between the source and drain electrodes is controlled by the gate voltage through an insulating thin film. CONSTITUTION:A metal film 2 that functions as a gate electrode, an insulating thin film 3, an organic thin film that is composed of pi-conjugated polymer and has a thickness of 1000 Angstrom or less, thereby performing the task as a semiconductor layer 4, as well as the metal film 6 that functions as respective electrodes of source and drain are formed on a substrate. In view of the ease of the film formation and composition, pi-conjugated polymer having a five-membered heterocyclic ring is in wide use. Among them in particular, it is preferable to have pi-conjugated polymer exhibited by I and II expressions and it is still more desirable for it to use polythiophene and poly (3-methylthiophene) from the practical point of view. Thus, the above measure makes it possible to obtain a stable operation and reduce a leakage of electricity and furthermore change drastically an electric current between source and drain electrodes by means of a gate voltage.

The peripheral portion of the second seal layer (18) is adhered to each other to form a sealed package. The package has an exposed cross section (16') of the inner layer (16), so that the environmental air can pass into the package to contact the quality-retaining agent (20) through laterally the inner layer (16) and then through the second seal layer (18).

Abstract: A differential capable of distributing a torque of the input shaft to the two output shaft thereof and equipped with a differential motion limiting mechanism. The differential comprises a differential mechanism which receives a driving force through the input shaft thereof from a transmission connected to an engine and distributes the driving force to two output shafts; an oil pump interposed between two shafts, namely, the input shaft and either one of the output shafts themselves, and adapted to be driven by a differential revolving speed between the two shafts so as to produce a discharge pressure corresponding to the differential revolving speed; a clutch mechanism for coupling the two shafts; a hydraulic circuit for supplying the discharge pressure of the oil pump to the clutch mechanism to engage the two shafts; and hydraulic control means provided in the hydraulic circuit to control the discharge pressure to be supplied to the clutch mechanism. The differential produces a limiting torque corresponding to the differential revolving speed between the two shafts to limit the differential motion between the two shafts.

Abstract: A room-warming/cooling and hot-water supplying heat-pump apparatus comprises a refrigerant circuit provided with a compressor, a four-way valve for switching room warming and cooling operations, a room side heat exchanger, a reversible flow type expansion device and an outdoor side heat exchanger, wherein a first switching means is connected to the outlet side of the compressor; a first branch of the switching means is connected to the four-way valve and a second branch of the first switching means is connected to one end of a heating coil in a hot water tank; the other end of the heating coil extends out of the hot water tank and has a branched part. A pipeline including the branched part has both ends connected to the refrigerant circuit at both sides of the expansion device in which at least one valve means is provided in the pipeline including the branched part and the first switching means and the valve means are controlled by a control device.
