TL;DR: The relationship between psychological sense of community and social climate factors was investigated within the context of a university residence community using the Sense of Community Index (SCI) and the University Residence Environment Scale (URES) as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The relationship between psychological sense of community and social climate factors was investigated within the context of a university residence community using the Sense of Community Index (SCI) and the University Residence Environment Scale (URES). Multiple regression results indicated that 54% of the variance of SCI scores was attributable to a combination of the involvement, academic achievement, and support characteristics of the residence's social climate. This suggests that perceived psychological sense of community is associated with perceptions of environmental performance demands as well as with interpersonal networks and support.

TL;DR: In this paper, high-resolution M band spectra are presented for the seven embedded IR sources W3 IRS 5, S140 IRS 1, NGC 7538 IRS 9, GL 2136, LkH-alpha 101, and MWC 349A, and the data are combined with previously published work for W33A and GL 2591.
Abstract: High-resolution M band spectra are presented for the seven embedded IR sources W3 IRS 5, S140 IRS1, NGC 7538 IRS 1, NGC 7538 IRS 9, GL 2136, LkH-alpha 101, and MWC 349A, and the data are combined with previously published work for W33A and GL 2591. Cold CO is seen toward all nine sources, with temperatures from 11 K to 66 K. Column densities of cold CO are presented. Hot gas is seen toward eight of the nine objects with temperatures from 120 K to 1010 K. New lower limits to the hot gas density are obtained. The hot gas toward GL 2591, GL 2136, W3 IRS 5, and S140 IRS 1 is probably very near the central source and heated via gas-grain collisions. The optical depth in the silicate feature is strongly correlated with the (C-13)O column density, confirming that silicate optical depth is a useful measure of gas column density. The ratio of solid-to-gaseous CO is obtained for seven sources.

TL;DR: The methods are described that may be used to study the adherent biofilms on inert surfaces and many of the procedures allow analysis of attached microbial consortia with minimum perturbation to the biofilm.
Abstract: Publisher Summary Numerous techniques are available for studying bacterial biofilms. Light and electron microscopy provide excellent means of examining the distribution of the bacteria on the surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can reveal some details about the mechanism(s) of attachment. Used in conjunction with intracellular formazan deposition techniques and a nalidixic acid sensitivity procedure, light microscopy can provide information about the percentage of actively metabolizing bacteria on a surface or concerning the sensitivity of the attached bacteria to biocidal agents. In this chapter, the methods are described that may be used to study the adherent biofilms on inert surfaces. Many of the procedures allow analysis of attached microbial consortia with minimum perturbation to the biofilm. Antibiotic (biocide) sensitivity testing is an especially useful application of procedures that measure the activity of biofilm bacteria.

TL;DR: It is suggested that increased cortisol levels may not be a normal component of the stress response of fish to disease caused by invasive infectious agents.
Abstract: Body condition, hepatosomatic index and blood chemistry of Oncorhynchus mykiss experimentally infected with a tissue dwelling fish pathogenic fungus, Ichthyophonus hoferi, were monitored over a 6 wk period. This was to determine whether the infection constituted a stress manifest by changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary interrenal axis, and especially plasma cortisol levels. Infection caused anaemia and leucopenia but did not change the condition, hepatosomatic indices, or plasma chloride, cholesterol, cortisol, creatinine, glucose, osmolarity, potassium, total protein, sodium and T4. It is suggested that increased cortisol levels may not be a normal component of the stress response of fish to disease caused by invasive infectious agents.

TL;DR: Time diaries facilitate the recording of the total flow of activities and attendant objective and subjective dimensions, such as activity coding, the interview approach, and the selection of diary days as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Approaches to activity measurement capable of capturing nuances necessary to appropriately identify and classify leisure activities are needed. Of the several existing measurement approaches the time diary is one of the most promising. Time diaries facilitate the recording of the total flow of activities and attendant objective and subjective dimensions. Areas of particular concern in the conduct of time diary studies are activity coding, the interview approach, and the selection of diary days. Time use data can be studied at both the macro and micro level. At the micro level one can study time points, individuals and events. At the macro level it is meaningful to study subpopulations, bundles of time and aggregated events. Analytically, a holistic approach must be taken with several dimensions, which compose the activity setting, being considered concurrently.

TL;DR: This paper interpreted the intervening region as a structural triangle zone similar to those at the foreland edges of other thrust belts, and showed that the platform succession on the peninsula is probably within the triangle zone and is therefore allochthonous; at least 30 km of Acadian-Devonian northwest transport is implied.
Abstract: Petroleum-industry multichannel marine seismic data in the public domain do not support the traditional interpretation of the Acadian deformation front in the Appalachians of western Newfoundland. They show that the Late Ordovician to latest Silurian Long Point-Clam Bank succession is folded in a northwest-facing monocline, whereas the underlying Cambrian-Ordovician platform succession dips southeast. We interpret the intervening region as a structural "triangle zone" similar to those at the foreland edges of other thrust belts. The contact between the Long Point Group and the underlying Humber Arm allochthon, previously interpreted as unconformable on Port au Port Peninsula, is the southeast-vergent upper detachment surface of the triangle zone. The platform succession on the peninsula is probably within the triangle zone and is therefore allochthonous; at least 30 km of Acadian (Silurian-Devonian) northwest transport is implied. The triangle zone continues to the northeast, offshore the Bay of Islands, suggesting that Grenvillian basement of the Long Range massif is also allochthonous.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the Mossbauer spectra of Al65Cr20Ge15 with up to 15 at.% Fe substituted for Cr have been rapidly solidified from the melt by single-roller melt spinning and have been shown to be single-phase icosahedral quasicrystals.
Abstract: Alloys of the form Al65Cr20Ge15 with up to 15 at.% Fe substituted for Cr have been rapidly solidified from the melt by single-roller melt spinning and have been shown to be single-phase icosahedral quasicrystals. X-ray diffraction measurements show an increase in disorder with increasing Fe content. Thermal analysis measurements indicate structural relaxation of the quasicrystalline phase prior to crystallization. Mossbauer spectra of all alloys exhibit a broadened doublet. These spectra are analysed in terms of models involving multiple transition metal sites and distributions of transition metal environments.

TL;DR: Infections of Myxobolus corneus (species nova) are described from the eyes of bluegills Lepomis macrochirus from Mt. Olive, Illinois as discussed by the authors, where individual eyes had up to 36 trophozoites distributed peripherally around the corneal margin with few beyond the level of the inner edge of the iris.
Abstract: Infections of Myxobolus corneus (species nova) are described from the eyes of bluegills Lepomis macrochirus from Mt. Olive, Illinois. Individual eyes had up to 36 trophozoites (0.250.8 mm in diameter) distributed peripherally around the corneal margin with few beyond the level of the inner edge of the iris. Mature spores were oval in front view and measured 8.0–10.5 um long and 6.5–9.0 μm wide. Spores of M. corneus resembled most closely those of Myxobolus cartilaginis (Hoffman, Putz, and Dunbar, 1965). Statistical comparison of spores of the two species with similarly prepared paratype material revealed that M. corneus has significantly smaller polar capsules than does M. cartilaginis. Myxobolus corneus is the fourth species of Myxobolus to be reported from bluegills in North America.

Abstract: There is a growing interest in, time allocation research. Particularly by government statistical bodies. Papers in this issue, briefly highlighted in this introduction, make a small contribution to fulfilling a need for wider exposure of time use literature. The included papers do two things. First, they identify issues related to the collection and analysis of time use data. Second, they show how time use data can be effectively applied to improve one's understanding of significant issues.

TL;DR: The preferred solid state conformations adopted by two (η6-ligand)Cr(CO)3 and N-phenyl-2,5-dimethylpyrrole, 2) complexes have been determined via single crystal X-ray crystallographic methods as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The preferred solid state conformations adopted by two (η6-ligand)Cr(CO)3 (η6-ligand: mesitylene, 1; N- phenyl-2,5-dimethylpyrrole, 2) complexes have been determined via single crystal X-ray crystallographic methods. Iadopts a conformation such that the C 6 ring carbon atoms are eclipsed with respect to the carbonyl ligands. Such a conformation is predictable from both steric and electronic considerations. 2, however, adopts a staggered conformation that must be attributed to the steric requirements of the bulky 2,5-dimethylpyrrole substituent.

TL;DR: The authors present a simulation model for assessing the impact of myopia and catch rate variability on the cost performance of a coordinated fishing fleet and the results show that myopic dispatching of the fleet can lead to significant increases in the cost of satisfying species requirements at the firm's plants.
Abstract: The authors present a simulation model for assessing the impact of myopia and catch rate variability on the cost performance of a coordinated fishing fleet. The trawler dispatching problem faced by integrated fish-processing firms in the Canadian Atlantic groundfish industry is modeled using the simulation language SLAM II. The results show that myopic dispatching of the fleet can lead to significant increases in the cost of satisfying species requirements at the firm's plants. The results obtained for the experiments which incorporated variability in catch rates show the cost increases with increasing variability, but not in a dramatic way. The results obtained from the model can be used to make some generalizations about the industry, particularly if it can be shown that the model can out-perform a company's experience on a given test problem from historical records. >

Abstract: Trichothecene mycotoxins were produced byFusarium sporotrichioides DAOM 197255 isolated from a spruce budworm cadaver. An extract from the culture filtrate containing these metabolites was toxic to budworm when ingested at concentrations as low as 10 ppm in diet, and survivors were predisposed to infection with a fungal entomopathogen. The possible role of these metabolites in the balsam fir-spruce budworm habitat is discussed.

Abstract: Although many local area networks and operating systems support the use of multicast communications, multicast communications have remained primarily an interesting research tool. However, the growing research interest in multimedia and hypermedia for knowledge-based models and cooperative work environments, and the need for object migration in distributed systems, suggest that there are other applications that could benefit from the use of multicast. This paper presents an overview of Edmund, a light weight kernel that supports interprocess multicast messaging on a network of Intel 80286 personal computers, as well as some of our preliminary research results which demonstrate the uses and benefits of multicast communication.

Abstract: A dynamic bioeconomic model is presented to aid coastal nations in the strategic planning of fishery resource management, domestic fleet development, and foreign fleet harvesting. Key model components include (1) dynamics of capacity expansion in the domestic fleet, (2) a “principal-agent” interaction between the coastal nation and foreign fleets, and (3) behavioral and policy constraints on feasible management options. Model analysis highlights the complex dynamic interactions possible under such conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, the noncentral multivariate beta density of the matrix L = [(YY′)-1/2Y X′ (XX′)- 1XY′ (YY′) 1/2] is derived.
Abstract: Given p×n X N(βY, ∑⊗I), β, ∑ unknown, the noncentral multivariate beta density of the matrix L = [(YY′)-1/2Y X′ (XX′)-1XY′ (YY′)-1/2] is desired. Khatri (1964) finds this density when β is of rank unity. The present paper derives the noncentral density of L and the density of the roots matrix of L for full rank β. The dual case density of L is also obtained. The derivations are based on generalized Sverdrup's lemma, Kabe (1965), and the relationship between primal and dual density of L is explicitly established.

TL;DR: For a specified linear function, the statistic to be used is Student's t as discussed by the authors, since the prediction intervals based on t are shorter than those based on F. Similar results hold for the multivariate linear regression model.
Abstract: When a (p+q)-variate column vector (x′,y′)′ has a (p+q)-variate normal density with mean vector (μ1,μ2) and covariance matrix Ω, unknown, Schervish (1980) obtains prediction intervals for the linear functions of a future y, given x. He bases the prediction interval on the F-distribution. However, for a specified linear function the statistic to be used is Student's t, since the prediction intervals based on t are shorter than those based on F. Similar results hold for the multivariate linear regression model.

Abstract: It is demonstrated that it is possible to approach the performance of a Frost (1972) beamformer but with significantly less computational effort by pre-steering in only few primary directions equi-spaced in sin( theta ) terms, and using linear constraints to perform secondary steering about the primary directions. Various issues concerning the number of taps, the dimension of the constraint space statistical stability and time-bandwidth product are discussed. Results are shown using both simulated and real towed array data. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a high resolution infrared absorption spectrum of W3 IRS5, at ≈ 5 x 105 L, was presented, which is the most luminous known YSO, and compare with CO millimeter observations.
Abstract: Many young stellar objects are centres of high velocity outflows, as revealed by broad wings on CO emission lines. Emission observations at millimeter wavelengths, because of the sizeable beamwidths employed, do not reveal the properties of gas very near the central YSO. A complementary technique, the observation of absorption lines in the fundamental vibrational band of CO at 4.7 tm, has proved a powerful probe of gas flow close to embedded protostars (e.g. Geballe and Wade 1985, Mitchell et al. 1988a). We present here a high resolution infrared absorption spectrum of W3 IRS5, at ≈ 5 x 105 LӨ the most luminous known YSO, and compare with CO millimeter observations.
