TL;DR: The high plasma Cortisol and ACTH levels present in pregnant women as well as the non‐parallelism of their plasma extract dilution curves in comparison with the standard curve in the ACTH radioimmunoassay are evidence for the presence of an ACTH‐like substance during pregnancy which would interfere with the assay.
Abstract: SUMMARY The high plasma Cortisol and ACTH levels present in pregnant women as well as the non-parallelism of their plasma extract dilution curves in comparison with the standard curve in the ACTH radioimmunoassay, are evidence for the presence of an ACTH-like substance during pregnancy which would interfere with the assay. Placental extracts were obtained by acid-acetone extraction, followed by partial purification with oxycellulose and by extraction with porous glass powder. A substance was detected which partially cross-reacted with synthetic human ACTH in the radioimmunoassay and which showed biological activity using the assay procedure described by Lipscomb & Nelson. The data sustain the existence of an ACTH-like placental hormone: human chorionic corticotrophin (HCC).

TL;DR: The central action of sulpiride differs from that of classic neuroleptics in that this drug stimulates dopamine turnover without producing catalepsy.
Abstract: —Sulpiride (5–200 mg/kg) increases brain HVA and DOPAC levels, causes no change in dopamine concentration, does not interfere with the outflow of HVA from the CNS and enhances the disappearance of brain dopamine after inhibition of tyrosine hydroxylase. The compound influences neither 5-HT nor NE metabolism. The central action of sulpiride differs from that of classic neuroleptics in that this drug stimulates dopamine turnover without producing catalepsy.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that up to four excitonic series in Mo$S 2 can be obtained by photoconductivity, photovoltaic effect and wavelength-modulated reflectivity at temperatures of 300 to 4.2 K and in magnetic fields of up to 70 kG.
Abstract: Optical spectra of Mo${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ in the excitonic region were obtained by photoconductivity, photovoltaic effect and wavelength-modulated reflectivity at temperatures of 300 to 4.2 K and in magnetic fields of up to 70 kG. Cleaved natural crystals and synthetic crystals studied in both the Faraday and Voigt configurations showed nearly the same characteristics. The results indicate the possibility of up to four excitonic series in Mo${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ as in other Mo dichalcogenides, and support band-structure calculations predicting flat conduction and valence bands originating from Mo orbitals. A ground-state anomaly of the $A$ exciton is explained by a central cell correction of the type used by Harbeke and Tosatti to explain a similiar anomaly in Pb${\mathrm{I}}_{2}$. The reduced mass of the $A$ exciton is found to be ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{*}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.4{m}_{0}$, both from the study of the series itself, and from its magneto-optical properties, thus removing a large discrepancy found in previous work.

TL;DR: The role of brain monoamines in male sexual behavior is described and inhibition of heterosexual copulatory behavior has been observed after the administration of LSD which is considered a direct stimulant of central serotonin receptors.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter describes the role of brain monoamines in male sexual behavior. The effects of p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) administration on the homo- and heterosexual behavior are suppressed in rats, rabbits and cats by 5-hydroxytryptophan, the direct precursor of serotonin. This amino acid also abolishes the spontaneous copulatory behavior of normal rats with receptive females. This inhibition is potentiated by inhibitors of extracerebral decarboxylase, suggesting that 5-HTP acts centrally. The monoamineoxidase inhibitor, pargyline, suppresses the spontaneous copulatory behavior of male rats with receptive females at the time when brain serotonin is maximally increased and inhibition, as well as serotonin accumulation, is prevented by PCPA. Marked homosexual mounting behavior has been observed in male rats after other treatments that lower brain serotonin, such as p-chloro-N-methyl-amphetamine and the intraventricular injection of 5,6 dihydroxytryptamine and furthermore, in testosterone-treated male rats, after different inhibitors of serotonin receptors such as mesorgydine, methysergide and Wa 335-BS . Inhibition of heterosexual copulatory behavior has been observed after the administration of LSD which is considered a direct stimulant of central serotonin receptors.

TL;DR: The arrangement of chromosomes in interphase nuclei of Anopheles atroparvus has been inferred from an analysis of the early stages of mitosis as seen following Quinacrine staining, and a peripheral arrangement of the interphase somatic complement is indicated.
Abstract: The arrangement of chromosomes in interphase nuclei of Anopheles atroparvus has been inferred from an analysis of: 1. The early stages of mitosis as seen following Quinacrine staining, and 2. The reversible effects on the chromatin pattern obtained following the treatment of living cells with various NaCl solutions, and the following conclusions have been reached: (a) The chromatin is connected to the nuclear membrane, (b) Homologous chromosomes show close side-by-side somatic pairing, (c) The long arms of the sex chromosomes form a fluorescent peripheral body, (d) The autosomes are strongly reflexed at the centromeres, (e) The autosomal centromeric regions are polarized towards the peripheral body, (f) The telomeric regions of all the autosomes are closely apposed. — A ring-shaped pattern of interphase chromatin is constantly and reversibly induced by NaCl 0.15 to 0.18 M solutions. — These relationships indicate a peripheral arrangement of the interphase somatic complement. — The distribution of the chromosomes in polytene nuclei and at the beginning of meiosis resembles that suggested above for somatic interphase cells. This distribution may apply more widely in the Diptera.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple theoretical model for the transition of antimony from the explosive amorphous phase to the stable crystalline phase has been proposed, and the energy released by this transition is measured to be 24 cal per gram of amorphized Sb and is related to a variation of the mass density and of the conductivity behaviour of Sb going from one configuration to the other.
Abstract: The transition of antimony from the explosive amorphous phase to the stable crystalline phase has been studied both from an experimental point of view as well as from a theoretical one. The energy released by this transition, is measured to be 24 cal per gram of amorphous Sb and is shown to be related to a variation of the mass density and of the conductivity behaviour of Sb going from one configuration to the other. A simple theoretical model is outlined which quite satisfactory gives the gross features of the free-energy diagram of the above transition, although more deep investigation is needed to account for the energy balance of it.

TL;DR: The long arms of the X and Y chromosomes of the mosquito Anopheles atroparvus are equal in length, synchronous in their late DNA replication and have homologous G and Q bands, indicating differentiation of the two sex chromosomes was the consequence of a single event such as a single deletion of an autosome.
Abstract: The long arms of the X and Y chromosomes of the mosquito Anopheles atroparvus (2n = 6) are equal in length, synchronous in their late DNA replication and have homologous G and Q bands. This indicates that differentiation of the two sex chromosomes was the consequence of a single event such as a single deletion of an autosome to give the Y chromosome, not followed by the acquisition of differential heterochromatic blocks.

TL;DR: The PHA-resposiveness of normal and Hodgkin patient human peripheral blood lymphocytes has been studied and data are in agreement with the hypothesis that the presence of serum cytotoxin is at least partly responsible for the immuno-incompetence of T-lymphocytes characteristic of Hodgkin's disease.
Abstract: The PHA-resposiveness of normal and Hodgkin patient human peripheral blood lymphocytes has been studied before and after incubation with Hodgkin cytotoxic sera. The following conclusions have been reached: (a) Hodgkin cytotoxic serum is capable of decreasing the PHA-responsiveness of normal lymphocytes and of furtherly impairing the already defective PHA-responsiveness of Hodgkin lymphocytes. (b) The impaired PHA-responsiveness can be restored to the original levels by eluting the cytotoxic antibody. Control experiments in which normal and Hodgkin lymphocytes were put in contact with normal and Hodgkin non-cytotoxic serum showed no decrease of PHA-responsiveness. These data are in agreement with the hypothesis that the presence of serum cytotoxin is at least partly responsible for the immuno-incompetence of T-lymphocytes characteristic of Hodgkin's disease.
