TL;DR: There was a significant decrease in mean embryo weight as development proceeded, indicating that developing embryos received little or no nutrient input from the maternal system after fertilization.
Abstract: The pike killifish, Belonesox belizanus, is native to Mexico and Central America and was introduced into Dade County, Florida in 1957. This study reports on the structure and reproduction of the Florida population and compares the species with other members of the family Poeciliidae. The mean standard length (SL) of mature females was about 103 mm. Most females larger than 75 mm SL contained yolked ova, fertilized eggs, or embryos. Mature males averaged about 72 mm SL, and most males larger than 55 mm SL were mature. The sex ratio was significantly skewed in favor of females among adults, but it did not differ significantly from 1:1 among immature fish. Average brood size was about 99, and there was a significant positive correlation of brood size with size of the parent female. There was no evidence of superfetation. Sizes and weights of embryos and neonates were the largest reported for the family. There was a significant decrease in mean embryo weight as development proceeded, indicating that developing embryos received little or no nutrient input from the maternal system after fertilization. The average interbrood interval of aquarium-held females was 42 days, and females stored viable sperm at least 47 days. Reproduction continued year round in the field. Laboratory-born neonates were immediately piscivorous and exhibited distinctive behavior associated with filling the swimbladder and with avoiding detection by predators.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship of sex-role orientation and depression in middle-aged women and concluded that women who subscribe to a traditional feminine role stereotype have a greater vulnerability to depression in their middle years.
Abstract: The present study was designed to investigate the relationship of sex-role orientation and depression in middle-aged women. It was hypothesized that middle-aged females who were clinically depressed would score higher in feminine characteristics on the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) than similar women who were not depressed. The subjects were two groups of women between the ages of 35 and 50. The clinical group consisted of 15 women who were currently diagnosed as depressive and who were undergoing treatment for depression at three local mental health centers. The nonclinical group consisted of 24 women who were not currently seeking treatment for depression and who had never undergone psychiatric treatment or therapy. All subjects were administered the BSRI and Beck's Depression Inventory. Results supported the hypothesis that depression in middle-aged females is related to their degree of acceptance of the traditional feminine role. For all subjects, depression scores were positively correlated with femininity scores. It was concluded that the woman who subscribes to a traditional feminine role stereotype has a greater vulnerability to depression in her middle years.

TL;DR: Stearman et al. as mentioned in this paper showed that the Yuqui and the Siriono share the same cultural heritage and that, while the Sirions are now acculturated, the Yuiqui only recently are undergoing this process.
Abstract: Allan Holmberg's ethnography of the Siriono Indians of eastern Bolivia depicts this group as one of the least complex human societies known. In recent years, anthropologists have argued that Siriono cultural poverty may be due to deculturation rather than to their failure to develop a more complex culture as the result of environmental stresses. Previous efforts to explore this hypothesis have been limited by the lack of additional data on the Siriono since Holmberg's early work. This study draws on new information derived from ethnohistorical sources and fieldwork among a recently pacified group known as the Yuqui. I demonstrate that the Yuqui and Siriono share the same cultural heritage and that, while the Siriono are now acculturated, the Yuqui only recently are undergoing this process. For this reason, the Yuqui case offers a parallel and current example from which new inferences can be made concerning the theory of Siriono deculturation. TL;DR: In this paper, optimal upper bounds for the distributions of two functions of the m r smallest latent roots of HE1 were obtained, where E and H have Wishart distributions with identical covariance matrices; E has a central distribution while H has a noncentral distribution with unknown noncentrality matrix A of rank r.
Abstract: Optimal upper bounds are obtained for the distributions of two functions of the m r smallest latent roots of HE1, where E and H have Wishart distributions with identical covariance matrices; E has a central distribution while H has a noncentral distribution with unknown noncentrality matrix A of rank r. These bounds are then used to investigate the chi-squared approximation for some test criteria used in tests of dimensionality.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered a family of triangular norms given, for any real number p ≠ 0, and showed that dominates is transitive on this family if and only if q ≦p.
Abstract: Dominates is a relation which can be defined on any collection of operations which (1) are defined on the same partially ordered set and (2) have the same identity. In this paper the family considered is a family {T p } =−∞ ∞ of triangular norms given, for any real numberp ≠ 0, by $$T_p (a,b) = \left[ {Max(a^p + b^p - 1,0} \right]^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 p}} \right. \kern- ulldelimiterspace} p}} $$ and, forp=−∞, 0 or ∞, by taking appropriate limits of those already defined. We sayT q dominatesT p provided $$T_q (T_p (a,b),T_p (c,d)) \geqq T_p (T_q (a,c),T_q (b,d))$$ for alla,b,c,d in [0, 1]. The main result of this paper is that dominates is transitive on this family, in fact,T q dominatesT p if and only ifq ≦p.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined perceptions of an attorney's credibility and case verdict as a function of the attorney's gender and found that women rated the female attorney as less intelligent, less friendly, less pleasant, less capable, less expert, and less experienced than the male attorney.
Abstract: The authors examined perceptions of attorney's credibility and case verdict as a function of attorney's gender. Results indicated that (1) women rated the female attorney as less intelligent, less friendly, less pleasant, less capable, less expert, and less experienced than the male attorney, and (2) mock jurors demonstrated a preference for retaining a male attorney rather than a female attorney as their own personal counsel.

TL;DR: There was a shift from limnetic to littoral species, principally rotifers, in a small, eutrophic central Florida lake for one year, and the abundance of the zooplankton declined.
Abstract: The number of individuals and species of zooplankton were sampled concurrently with Hydrilla biomass and water quality for one year in a small, eutrophic central Florida lake. Throughout the study, rotifer species and individuals dominated the zooplankton. The abundance of the zooplankton tended to remain high when Hydrilla biomass was at its seasonal low during late winter and early spring. When hydrilla growth increased in the late spring and summer months causing a decrease in total alkalinity, specific conductivity, water color, turbidity, orthophosphate and chlorophyll a concentrations; the abundance of the zooplankton declined. During this time, there was a shift from limnetic to littoral species, principally rotifers. Hydrilla growth did not affect the mean number of cladoceran or copepod species, but may have led to an increase in rotifer species.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the relationship between bond betas and default risk and show that the relationship is influenced by offsetting or conflicting factors that cause the relationship to be ambiguous.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between bond betas and default risk. Previous studies conclude that there is an apparent lack of a significant and direct relationship and offer various explanations. This paper illustrates that beta is influenced by offsetting or conflicting factors that cause the relationship to be ambiguous. Empirical evidence confirms the explanation.

TL;DR: This study examined the similarities and differences in characteristics of learning disabled males staffed into resource programs and those staffed into self-contained programs and selected subtests of the Detroit Test of Learning Aptitude.
Abstract: This study examined the similarities and differences in characteristics of learning disabled males staffed into resource programs and those staffed into self-contained programs. The performance of the 35 self-contained and 50 resource students was compared on the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children, the Picture Story Language Test, the Peabody Individual Achievement Test, the Wide Range Achievement Test, and selected subtests of the Detroit Test of Learning Aptitude. The subjects were also compared on the factors of retention, chronological age, and a subjective index of behavior. Results of a discriminant function indicated a difference only in the intelligence factor between the two groups. Findings related to the use of the preceding variables for discrimination of L.D. placement are discussed and implications for personnel training are reviewed.

TL;DR: A generalized method for maintaining views, which takes into account each view's pattern of usage, is described, which involves storing views in both actual and potential forms.
Abstract: A generalized method for maintaining views, which takes into account each view's pattern of usage, is described. This method involves storing views in both actual and potential forms. When views exist in actual form (concrete views), updates are deferred until the view is queried. Differential files are formed from tuples inserted and deleted from the defining relations. These differential files are then used in conjunction with specified update schemes to update the view. Views alternate between actual and potential form based on their usage and the storage replacement algorithm.
