TL;DR: This article examined the issue of pretrial discrimination by focusing on the prosecutor's decision to reject or dismiss charges against black, Anglo, and Hispanic male and female defendants in Los Angeles, revealing a pattern of discrimination in favor of female defendants and against black and Hispanic defendants.
Abstract: While social scientists have long been interested in the issue of racial and sexual discrimination within the criminal justice system, they have concentrated on the decisions to convict and sentence and have paid relatively little attention to the decision to prosecute. This study examines the issue of pretrial discrimination by focusing on the prosecutor's decision to reject or dismiss charges against black, Anglo, and Hispanic male and female defendants in Los Angeles. The data reveal a pattern of discrimination in favor of female defendants and against black and Hispanic defendants. Hispanic males are most likely to be prosecuted fully, followed by black males, Anglo males, and females of all ethnic groups.

TL;DR: These findings represent the first explicit demonstration of ovarian synchrony in a New World primate, and the tight coupling of ovarian cycles in female tamarins resembles the nature of menstrual synchronies in human females.
Abstract: Synchronization of ovarian events has been reported in a number of primate species, with the temporal resolution of synchrony ranging from the occurrence of seasonal breeding within the annual cycle to a close matching of ovarian events within a single ovarian cycle. However, ovarian synchrony has not been reported in a New World primate. The temporal association of ovarian events was examined in female golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) living in the same or different social groups. Ovarian cyclicity was monitored by measuring the excretion of urinary estrogen metabolites. There was a high degree of synchronization in the occurrence of urinary estrogen peaks for females in different social groups (mean peak discrepancy = 2.1 days) and in females housed in the same social group (mean peak discrepancy = 1.3 days). Contrary to previous reports on callitrichid primates, daughters housed in their natal family group exhibited cyclic patterns of urinary estrogen excretion. These findings represent the first explicit demonstration of ovarian synchrony in a New World primate, and the tight coupling of ovarian cycles in female tamarins resembles the nature of menstrual synchrony in human females.

TL;DR: The same significance should be attributed to a recovery-positive as to an exercise-positive treadmill test, and electrocardiographic, hemodynamic and angiocardiographic variables do not distinguish between subjects who exhibit these 2 different responses.
Abstract: A treadmill exercise test response may become positive because a diagnostic electrocardiographic ST-segment shift occurred during exercise, or, less often, because it occurred only during the recovery period after exercise had been completed. Factors that may be related to these 2 different responses in subjects enrolled in the Program of Surgical Control of Hyperlipidemia were investigated. No differences were found with regard to age, sex, level or location of Minnesota electrocardiographic Q-QS codes, number of narrowed coronary arteries, presence of collateral coronary artery circulation, ejection fraction, number of abnormally moving left ventricular wall segments, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, double product, total exercise time, exercise-induced angina, or maximally achieved exercise heart rate or double product. Thus, the same significance should be attributed to a recovery-positive as to an exercise-positive treadmill test, and electrocardiographic, hemodynamic and angiocardiographic variables do not distinguish between subjects who exhibit these 2 different responses.

TL;DR: Fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint seemed better than resection alone, indicating that stability should be the primary goal for surgical intervention of the rheumatoid forefoot.
Abstract: Forefoot surgical outcomes were evaluated in 26 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A total of 45 procedures were reviewed with emphasis on first ray intervention. Disease duration and aggressiveness of preceding medical therapy were combined to establish a disease severity index. Patients operated were predominantly in the midrange of disease severity. Subjective data on the relief of pain, callus, and deformity were favorable but this benefit was not long lasting inasmuch as patients were most satisfied in the period immediately following surgery and less so as time elapsed from intervention. Fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint seemed better than resection alone, indicating that stability should be the primary goal for surgical intervention of the rheumatoid forefoot.

TL;DR: The authors evaluated a seven-day program that used discussion, dance, and song to bring children and older adults from the community together in the context of a sixth-grade unit on aging.
Abstract: This study attempted to evaluate a seven‐day program that used discussion, dance, and song to bring children and older adults from the community together in the context of a sixth‐grade unit on aging. Subjects were 21 sixth‐grade students who completed a questionnaire at the end of five of seven days of the program, indicating their perceptions of the activities that had occurred. Results suggested that as the program progressed the children began to perceive the older participants in active rather than passive terms, and that the nature of the program became more interactive.

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of various measures of prior record on sentences for male and female defendants convicted of violent and nonviolent crimes was examined and found that prior incarceration had a strong and consistent impact on sentence severity, but that prior arrest and prior conviction had much weaker effects.
Abstract: The defendant's prior criminal record has been shown to be an important factor in explaining sentencing decisions and in accounting for sentencing disparity. Yet little attention has been paid to the appropriate measurement of this variable. Researchers have not agreed on a common measure, but have used misdemeanor or felony arrests, misdemeanor or felony convictions, prison terms, or some combination of these. This paper examined the impact of various measure of prior record on sentences for male and female defendants convicted of violent and nonviolent crimes. We found that prior incarceration had a strong and consistent impact on sentence severity, but that prior arrest and prior conviction had much weaker effects. We also found that the effect of prior record on judge's decisions to sentence and incarcerate varied by gender and that the choice of a measure influenced conclusions concerning the existence and extent of gender discrimination in sentencing.

TL;DR: Results of hybridization using a unique sequence probe localized to 22q11 are consistent with the interpretation that both ends of both marker chromosomes are derived from 22, confirming this region as a cause of cat-eye syndrome.
Abstract: Except for atypical eye findings in the daughter, a mother and daughter with bisatellited marker chromosomes had abnormalities consistent with cat-eye syndrome. The mother's marker chromosome (mar number 1) is derived from one 22 and another acrocentric, possibly also a 22; the daughter's marker (mar number 2) may be an iso-dicentric, inv-dup (22) derivative of mar number 1. The mother has a tertiary trisomy translocation chromosome composed of at least one and perhaps two copies of 22pter----q11.2, whereas the daughter clearly has a secondary trisomy 22pter----q11.2 isochromosome, confirming this region as a cause of cat-eye syndrome. Results of hybridization using a unique sequence probe localized to 22q11 are consistent with the interpretation that both ends of both marker chromosomes are derived from 22.

TL;DR: This paper used a quasiexperimental design to examine adolescents' attitudes toward female political candidates and found that females were more willing than males and blacks were more likely than whites to vote for the female candidate.
Abstract: During the past two decades there has been an increase in the number of women who campaign for and attain political office. This clearly has the potential to influence attitudes toward women in politics. In particular, it has the potential to influence the attitudes of adolescents, who, according to socialization theory, are especially affected by role models. In this study we used a quasiexperimental design to examine adolescents' attitudes toward female political candidates. We found that the junior and senior high school students we surveyed did not, as a group, use candidate sex as a voting cue. However, females were more willing than males and blacks were more willing than whites to vote for the female candidate.

TL;DR: The authors found that the ability to use context deliberately to facilitate word recognition reaches asymptote for the average reader by the sixth grade at the latest, and perhaps by the fourth.
Abstract: Average and advanced readers from the fourth and sixth grades read visually presented words as rapidly as possible. Target words were preceded by a related prime word, an unrelated word, or a neutral warning stimulus. Related trials constituted 75% of the word prime trials for half of the subjects in each group, and only 25% for the other half. All groups were sensitive to this proportion manipulation, showing only faster naming times for related targets in the 25% condition. In the 75% condition, subjects showed inhibition for unrelated targets, as well as facilitation for related targets. The results indicate that the ability to use context deliberately to facilitate word recognition reaches asymptote for the average reader by the sixth grade at the latest, and perhaps by the fourth. This ability does not appear to be one that shows further improvements at higher levels of reading skill. Some possible reasons for the discrepancies between this research and that using incomplete sentence contexts are considered.

TL;DR: The authors compare subjective accounts of supervisory meetings from the respective viewpoints of student teachers, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors; and examine changes in these viewpoints over the course of the first semester of student teaching.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare subjective accounts of supervisory meetings from the respective viewpoints of student teachers, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors; and to examine changes in these viewpoints over the course of the first semester of student teaching. Participants were 25 student teachers, their cooperating teachers, and eight university supervisors who completed protocols at the conclusion of each of three supervisory meetings held at approximately equal intervals during the first semester. Responses to the protocols reflected participants' interpretation of the topics and accomplishments of each meeting. Results revealed three distinct perspectives depending upon the sensitivities and concerns of participants. Student teachers perceived that more time was spent discussing their shortcomings than did the other two groups. The nature of topics discussed was also related to the sequence of the meeting. As the semester progressed, participants perceived that les...

TL;DR: There did not appear to be any practical differences in beliefs about professional attributes among pharmacists working in hospital, independent community, and chain community practice settings.
Abstract: The attitudes of pharmacists in three practice settings toward a set of attributes associated with professionalism were studied. A questionnaire that included the 40-item Shack and Hepler professionalism instrument was mailed to 1999 pharmacists in Ohio. Responses from 617 pharmacists who worked in hospital, independent community, or chain community pharmacy practice were used. There were significant differences between the responses of pharmacists who worked in the different practice settings (multivariate analysis of variance, p less than 0.01). However, the practice setting accounted for less than 10% of the variance in the responses. Statistically significant differences were also observed when the pharmacists were grouped according to sex, years since graduation, degree, and job position; however, less than 8% of the variance in the responses could be explained by the demographic variables. There did not appear to be any practical differences in beliefs about professional attributes among pharmacists working in hospital, independent community, and chain community practice settings.

TL;DR: This study sought to derive equations for the functions of estimating the body density, lean body weight, and percentage body fat of older men with multiple correlation coefficients and standard error of estimates of the most practical.
Abstract: This study sought to derive equations for the functions of estimating the body density (Db), lean body weight (LBW), and percentage body fat (PBF) of older men. Hydrostatic weighing was used to determine the criterion measures of 25 older men, 56 to 70 years of age (M = 62.1, SD = 4.2 years). A stepwise multiple regression analysis of these data developed equations for each variable with multiple correlation coefficients and standard error of estimates of the most practical (p less than .001) being: Db = .857, 0.0047 g/ml; LBW = .954, 2.08 kg; PBF = .842, 2.36%, respectively. The accuracy of these results are commensurate with others reported in the literature.

TL;DR: In this paper, an earlier study of the status of academic women sociologists in the Midwest that was extended to 1984-1985 is discussed, showing that gains in employment status for women slowed in the 1980s.
Abstract: In this article, an earlier study of the status of academic women sociologists in the Midwest that was extended to 1984–1985 is discussed. Type of appointment, rank, and chairpersons, as well as position in a Ph.D. rather than an M.A. program were used in the study as indicators of employment status. Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) leadership positions and participation in the annual MSS meeting served as indicators of professional participation. The results show that gains in employment status for women slowed in the 1980s. Employment of women in sociology department positions, especially in full-time positions and higher ranks, continued to lag behind the proportion of women Ph.D.s in the field. Women were overrepresented in the secondary labor market of part-time employment. However, women are now almost as likely to be employed in Ph.D. as well as M.A. programs. While gains in employment status generally slowed, professional participation has accellerated in recent years. Possible explanations for the differential penetrability of the two realms are offered. The appropriateness of statistical parity as a standard for evaluating equality in academic employment also is discussed. This article proposes that structural barriers to employment equity for women may not be more significant than direct discrimination.
