TL;DR: The present reply successively deals with points that are clearly refutable, those which are debatable and those which constitute valid criticism.
Abstract: A. N. Habermann recently published some "Critical comments on the programming language Pascal". His reproaches are principally that numerous constructs are ill-defined, that there is "confusion" amongst ranges, types and structures, and that the goto statement should have been abolished. The present reply successively deals with points that are clearly refutable, those which are debatable and those which constitute valid criticism. Its principal aim is to encourage the reader to form his own opinion.

Abstract: Mathematical expressions are obtained for the power spectrum of a turbulence-degraded image of a point source as a function of exposure time. Calculations are based on the near-field Rytov–Kolmogorov approximations and the Taylor hypothesis. Comparisons with available data are satisfactory.

TL;DR: It is concluded that electrogenic Cl transport may be the dominant mechanism for water and salt transport in flounder intestine, and that adaptation to a saline environment involves regulation of pumping rather than of Na or Cl entry across the mucosal membrane.
Abstract: 1. Everted intestinal sacs prepared from Platichthys flesus adapted to sea water (SW) have higher rates of salt and water transport than did sacs prepared from fresh water adapted (FW) fish. 2. Intestines mounted in Ussing chambers gave stable open-circuit voltages and short-circuit currents after pre-incubation for 20--30 min of --1.91 +/- 0.14 (14) mV and --45.0 +/- 5.1 (14) muA/cm2, SW fish, and --1.24 +/- 0.14 (11) mV and --18.2 +/- 3.6 (11) muA/cm2, FW fish. 3. Isotope flux measurements indicated a net Na transport of 21.5 +/- 4.1 (11) neq/cm2-min in SW fish intestines, but no significant Na transport in FW fish (7.6 +/- 7.6 (9) new/cm2-min). Both preparations showed an active Cl transport, 26.6 +/- 6.1 (12) neq/cm2-min for SW and 18.5 +/- 9.7 (17) neq/cm2-min for FW fish. 4. No significant difference in the uptake of Na or Cl across the mucosa was observed between FW and SW fish. The uptake of both ions showed some saturation at high concentrations. 5. Interactions between Na and Cl uptake were small, although Cl uptake was significantly higher in Na-free solutions. 6. It is concluded that electrogenic Cl transport may be the dominant mechanism for water and salt transport in flounder intestine, and that adaptation to a saline environment involves regulation of pumping rather than Na or Cl entry across the mucosal membrane.

TL;DR: An additive degree of freedom is defined, which turns out to be an exact measure of the complexity of computation of a family 7 of linear forms in r variables over a field.
Abstract: The notion of the linear algorithm to compute a family 7 of linear forms in r variables over a field is defined. Ways to save addltmns are investigated by analyzing the combinatorial aspects of linear dependences between subrows of a given matrix F. Further, an additive degree of freedom is defined, which turns out to be an exact measure of the complexity of computation of 7.

TL;DR: A good development was obtained with both Orchis laxiflora and Ophrys sphegodes Mill, if sucrose, organic nitrogen and vitamins were added to a basic mineral medium containing ammonium nitrate.
Abstract: Summary In order to assess the role of endophytic fungi in the germination and growth of wild European orchids, Orchis laxiflora Lamk. and Ophrys sphegodes Mill, were tested on asymbiotic strictly defined media. In spite of minor differences between the two species, a good development was obtained with both, if sucrose, organic nitrogen and vitamins were added to a basic mineral medium containing ammonium nitrate. Casein hydrolysate as an organic nitrogen source could be replaced successfully by a reconstitution of its amino acids or by glutamine. Among the vitamins tested thiamine proved to be necessary to Orchis laxiflora.

TL;DR: The conformation of the ribose‐phosphate unit for the four principal configurations of the sugar ring has been studied using the extended Hückel theory and the Lennard–Jones empirical potential to minimize the energy of this residue with regard to the structure of RNA.
Abstract: The conformational analysis by the Extended Huckel Theory of the deoxyribose-phosphate unit in the principal configurations of the sugar is discussed. The work is divided into three parts in order to determine the role of the different elements constituting such a unit. (1) The simultaneous study, for the four principal configurations of the sugar, of the possible ranges of the rotational parameters ψ and ϕ′ with P3 and P5 without their oxygen atoms. (2) The study of the influence of the oxygen atoms, situated on P3 and P5, on the rotations ψ and ϕ′ for the C3′endo and C2′endo sugar configurations. (3) The study of the influence of a nucleobase on the rotation ψ, and whether the oxygen atoms of the phosphate groups should be taken into account or not. The results show the equivalences C3′endo ≃ C2′exo and C2′endo ≃ C3′exo; that the allowed angular ranges of our rotational parameters depend, in some degree on the chosen sugar configuration; and that the rotations ψ and ϕ′ appear as “quasi” independent. In addition, an energetic classification which, according to the Extended Huckel Theory, seems to show that the C2′endo sugar configuration is the most favored for our unit was established; it was shown that the introduction of the oxygen atoms has no influence on the rotation ψ, but on the contrary leads to a restriction of the possible range for the ϕ′ parameter; and it was determined that the influence of the adenine base fixed in its position of minimal energy (i.e., anti-conformation) on the rotation ψ, as a function of the presence or absence of the oxygen atoms, is relatively limited.

TL;DR: In this article, the electrical conductivity of NaDNA solutions under salt-free conditions at temperatures well below the melting point of DNA, using radio-frequency dielectric and noise measurements.
Abstract: We have studied the electrical conductivity of NaDNA solutions under “saltfree” conditions at temperatures well below the melting point of DNA, using radio-frequency dielectric and noise measurements A conductivity discontinuity is observed at a temperature well below that at which the usual denaturation processes and trans conformation may commence The radio-frequency permittivity also exhibits a discontinuity at the same temperature For the premelting phase, the conductivity versus temperature curves consist of two linear regions with a change in slope occurring at 23°C This effect is related to the behavior of the ionic sheath covering the DNA macromolecule The activation energy of the alternative current conductivity as well as that the equivalent noise conductivity results as 311 kcal/mole below and 408 kcal/mole

TL;DR: In this article, a link between optimal levels of the three principal marketing mix instruments (price, promotion and product quality) and the development expenditures devoted to the quality improvement of a firm's existing product is forged.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to forge a link between optimal levels of the three principal marketing mix instruments—price, promotion and product quality—and the development expenditures devoted to the quality improvement of a firm's existing product. Using the latest operational marketing mix model which prescribes quantitatively what the optimal quality of a brand should be, a simple function relating this optimal quality to desirable development outlays is suggested and some of its implications are explored.

TL;DR: Two particular aspects of this system, its usability and its portability are emphasized, and a comparison with some good competitive systems are given, and conclusions for future work are drawn.
Abstract: This paper presents a system for automating the production of compilers for programming languages. It emphasizes two particular aspects of this system, its usability and its portability. It also gives a comparison with some good competitive systems, and draws conclusions for future work. The system produces compilers written in the programming language Pascal, from a self-contained description of the language to be compiled. This description uses a notation similar to Backus-Naur form for the syntax, and semantic attributes and actions written in Pascal for the semantics. The system is written entirely in Pascal, and is in current use on several computers.
