Abstract: The aim of this paper is to study the main macroeconomic, financial and structural factors that shaped current account developments in Greece over the period from 1960 to 2007 and discuss these developments in relation to the issue of external sustainability. Concerns over Greece’s external sustainability have emerged since 1999 when the current account deficit widened substantially and exhibited high persistence. The empirical model used, which theoretically rests on the intertemporal approach, treats the current account as the gap between domestic saving and investment. We examine the behaviour of the current account in the long run and the short run using co-integration analysis and a variety of econometric tests to account for the effect of significant structural changes in the period under review. We find that a stable equilibrium current account model can be derived if the ratio of private sector financing to GDP, as a proxy for financial liberalisation, is included in the specification. Policy options to restore the country’s external sustainability are explored based on the estimated equilibrium model.

Abstract: To achieve power efficient monitoring of targets by sensor networks, various coverage algorithms have been proposed. These algorithms divide the sensor nodes into cover sets, where each cover set is capable of monitoring all targets. Generating the maximum number of cover sets has been proven to be an NP-complete problem and, thus, algorithms producing sub-optimal solutions have been proposed. In this paper we present a novel and efficient coverage algorithm, that can produce both disjoint cover sets, i.e. cover sets with no common sensor nodes, as well as non-disjoint cover sets. While searching for the best sensor to include in a cover set, our algorithm uses a cost function that takes into account the monitoring capabilities of a sensor, its association with poorly monitored targets, but also the sensor's remaining battery life. Through simulations, we show that the proposed algorithm outperforms similar heuristic algorithms found in the literature, producing collections of cover sets of optimal (or near-optimal) size. The increased availability offered by these cover sets along with the short execution time of the proposed algorithm make it desirable for a wide range of node deployment environments.

Abstract: This paper provides empirical evidence that sheds new light into the dynamic interactions between risk and efficiency, a highly debated issue. First, we estimate three alternative measures of bank performance, by employing a directional distance function framework, along with a cost frontier and a profit function. As a second step, we calculate a Merton-type bank default risk. Then, we employ a panel VAR analysis, which allows the examination of the underlying relationships between efficiency and risk without applying any a priori restrictions. Most evidence shows that the effect of a one standard deviation shock of the distance to default on inefficiency is negative and substantial. There is some evidence of a reverse causation. As part of a sensitivity analysis, we extent our study to investigate the relationship between efficiency and default risk for banks with different types of ownership structures and across financial systems with different levels of development.

Abstract: The power awareness issue is the primary concern within the domain of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Most power dissipation ocurrs during communication, thus routing protocols in WSNs mainly aim at power conservation. Moreover, a routing protocol should be scalable, so that its effectiveness does not degrade as the network size increases. In response to these issues, this work describes the development of an efficient routing protocol, named SHPER (Scaling Hierarchical Power Efficient Routing).

Abstract: Over the last decade, several research initiatives have investigated the potentials of the educational paradigm shift from the traditional one-size-fits-all teaching approaches to adaptive and personalized learning. On the other hand, mobile devices are recognized as an emerging technology to facilitate teaching and learning strategies that exploit individual learners' context. This has led to an increased interest on context-aware adaptive and personalized mobile learning systems aiming to provide learning experiences delivered via mobile devices and tailored to learner's personal characteristics and situation. To this end, in this paper we present a context-aware adaptive and personalized mobile learning system, namely the Units of Learning mobile Player (UoLmP), which aims to support semi-automatic adaptation of learning activities, that is: (a) adaptations to the interconnection of the learning activities (namely, the learning flow) and (b) adaptations to the educational resources, tools and services that support the learning activities. Initial evaluation results from the use of UoLmP provide evidence that UoLmP can successfully adapt the learning flow of an educational scenario and the delivery of educational resources, tools and services that support the learning activities. Finally, these adaptations can facilitate students to complete successfully the learning activities of an educational scenario.
