TL;DR: The eight-armed pluteus larva of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Cl. Echinoidea) normally swims with the arms leading, but when placed in sea water containing abundant particulate matter, such as unicellular algae, it shows occasional irregular periods of reverse locomotion.
Abstract: ECHINODERM larvae are capable of a variety of complex and apparently coordinated activities involving not only muscular movements but changes in the direction of ciliary beating1,2. The eight-armed pluteus larva of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Cl. Echinoidea) normally swims with the arms leading, but when placed in sea water containing abundant particulate matter, such as unicellular algae, it shows occasional irregular periods of reverse locomotion. These are caused by reversal of the ciliary beat in the ciliated bands which run around the edges of the arms. At the same time, material may be ejected from the oral region, an activity assisted by contraction of the anterior dilator muscles. During a ciliary reversal the cilia of the epaulettes (isolated patches of ciliated epithelium) reverse or stop beating. The reversal response can be evoked by tactile or electrical stimulation of any part of the surface.

TL;DR: This paper examined the cultural context of a transnational post-secondary program offered by the Faculty of Business at a Canadian college, with campuses located in both St. John's and Doha.
Abstract: Findings from a comparative case study conducted in Canada and Qatar are presented in this article. The study examined the cultural context of a transnational post-secondary program offered by the Faculty of Business at a Canadian college, with campuses located in both St. John’s and Doha. The instructors’ perceptions of their students’ cultures are examined, and the resulting teaching strategies that appear to represent successful pedagogical adaptations to cultural context are discussed. The data are examined through the lens of a cultural dimensions framework developed for this case study. Drawing primarily on Hofstede (1980, 2001), the framework was modifi ed with additions from Hall (2003) and Dimmock and Walker (2005). The analysis is built on six cultural dimensions: monochronic/polychronic time orientation; power distance; individualism/collectivism; uncertainty avoidance; generative/replicative; and aggression/consideration. Possible factors contributing to the reported cultural traits within each dimension are discussed; in addition, the overall effectiveness of the framework is reviewed and recommendations for future practice and research are offered.

TL;DR: A method of numerical analysis was applied to this presence and absence data and Jaccard's Coefficient of Community was used to compare all samples on the basis of their biotic similarities.
Abstract: Routine plankton tow collections were made at established sampling stations in two lakes and species lists were prepared for each sample. A method of numerical analysis was applied to this presence and absence data and Jaccard's Coefficient of Community was used to compare all samples on the basis of their biotic similarities. The resultant study was essentially an exploration of the method with a view to the possibilities of its application in future limnological investigations. The results of the analysis indicate the utility of the method and suggest areas of research requiring further investigation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the ion current to a spherical probe (radius rp, bias voltage V) immersed in a collision-dominated flowing plasma of subsonic velocity vf has been calculated to be IMG1 where ne is the electron density, μi the ion mobility, e the electronic charge and 0 the permittivity of free space.
Abstract: By following the same line of reasoning which the authors used in a previous paper, concerned with cylindrical probes, the ion current Ii to a spherical probe (radius rp, bias voltage V) immersed in a collision-dominated flowing plasma of subsonic velocity vf has been calculated to be IMG1 where ne is the electron density, μi the ion mobility, e the electronic charge and 0 the permittivity of free space. This theory is only valid for conditions where the plasma sheath diameter r0>>rp. A propane-air flame with a moving probe was used to investigate the above relationship. Reasonable agreement (considering the approximations made in deriving the theoretical relationship) was obtained between measured and theoretical ion currents.

TL;DR: Data are presented which support Deutsch's hypothesis that language deficiencies tend to remain in the verbal repertoire of children disadvantaged with respect to social class and indicate that correction is possible if structured language experiences are provided.
Abstract: A summer educational program for Indian children living on reserves is discussed. Data are presented which support Deutsch's hypothesis that language deficiencies tend to remain in the verbal repertoire of children disadvantaged with respect to social class. The data also indicate that correction is possible if structured language experiences are provided but that deficiencies do not appear to improve simply as a function of time and undifferentiated school activities.

TL;DR: Red blood cell count and haemoglobin content for blood of normal adult salamanders, Taricha granulosa, are presented and some evidence suggesting transient changes in these levels for a brief period immediately following hibernation is discussed.
Abstract: Red blood cell count and haemoglobin content for blood of normal adult salamanders, Taricha granulosa, are presented. The RBC count is some 4 × 104/mm3 blood and the haemoglobin level some 4.5 gm/100 ml blood. Some evidence suggesting transient changes in these levels for a brief period immediately following hibernation is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the quadrupole-octupole dependence for linear momentum flux from a single system can be achieved by a double system, and a lower-order flux can also be obtained by a single double system.
Abstract: Einstein's power-transfer theory is developed to exhibit the rate at which energy is transferred by gravitational radiation from an emitter to an absorber in terms of their lowest-order contributing multipole moments (quadrupole), the separation distance, and the emitter frequency. The description of the interaction is complete, and the need to calculate fields is obviated. Consistency is demonstrated by comparing the total power transferred between the two systems with the power flux over an infinite sphere which arises from their interaction. The gravitational linear momentum flux which arises from the interaction is also shown to be purely quadrupole. Bonnor and Rotenberg, Papapetrou, and Peres demonstrated the quadrupole-octupole dependence for linear momentum flux from a single system, and the present work illustrates that a lower-order flux can be achieved by a double system.

TL;DR: Observations suggest that tyrosinase may be among the chromosomally bound enzymes of the chromatin space in Taricha torosa, the California newt.
Abstract: The DOPA-reaction was used to identify tyrosinase in the nucleus and cytoplasm of the neural crest melanoblast of Taricha torosa , the California newt. In this urodele there is a nuclear DOPA-positive response during the normal embryonic development from the late blastula stage to the nucleus of the early melanocyte. During the gastrula stages, all nuclei of this newt are DOPA-positive. This positive nuclear response fades away after the formation of the neural crest, save in the melanoblasts. The only cells that give a positive DOPA marking in the cytoplasm are the melanoblasts. This cytoplasmic reaction appears while the melanoblast nucleus still gives a DOPA-positive reaction. Tyrosinase activity, as marked by unlabeled DOPA, has ceased in the fully mature melanocyte. The red nuclei, seen in some of the animals in the maturing melanocyte and adjacent tissues, may be in the hallachrome stage of melanin formation. There is a diffuse distribution of DOPA reactivity in the resting nucleus, and an adherence of the DOPA-marking in the region of the dividing chromosomes in the mitosis of DOPA-positive nuclei of the melanoblast. These observations suggest that tyrosinase may be among the chromosomally bound enzymes of the chromatin space.

Abstract: In the framework of Landau and Lifshitz, the rate at which angular momentum is lost by a bounded matter distribution through the gravitational channel is shown to be\(dL^{\alpha \beta } /dt = - \oint\limits_S {( - g)\{ x^\alpha t^{\beta \gamma } - x^\beta t^{\alpha \gamma } \} n_\gamma dS} \), wheretαβ is the Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensor This flux is expressed in terms of the quadrupole and octupole moments of the source in Einstein’s linearized approximation Applied to a spinning rod, the angular-momentum loss is found to be consistent with the energy loss as computed by Eddington

TL;DR: This paper explored the history of the discourses that structure these practices, specifically the institution of medicine, through an interpretation of Foucault's genealogical and archaeological methodologies and found that these discourses limit the possibility of creating meaning in death in a positive way.
Abstract: While there is continuous research being done on death and dying, often theoretical abstractions are offered which are removed from the realities of lived experiences. This paper seeks to understand contemporary practices of death and dying, in a Canadian context, through an analysis of the larger discourses which structure our conceptions of death. Guided by an interpretation of Foucault’s genealogical and archaeological methodologies, current practices of death and dying are explored by tracing the history of the discourses that structure these practices, specifically the institution of medicine. This paper reaffirms the need to further explore the heterogeneity of death and dying as cultural experience and examines the ways in which those experiences are influenced by broader discourses that limit the possibility of creating meaning in death in a positive way.

TL;DR: The author applies some of his earlier results which extend the well-known Hille-Hardy formula for the Laguerre polynomials to certain classes of generalized hypergeometric poynomials in order to derive various generalizations of a bilinear generating function for the Jacobi polynmials proved recently by Carlitz.
Abstract: In the present paper, the author applies some of his earlier results which extend the well-known Hille-Hardy formula for the Laguerre polynomials to certain classes of generalized hypergeometric polynomials in order to derive various generalizations of a bilinear generating function for the Jacobi polynomials proved recently by Carlitz. The corresponding results for the polynomials of Legendre, Gegenbauer (or ultraspherical), Laguerre, etc., can be obtained fairly easily as the specialized or limiting cases of the generating functions presented here. It is also shown how the formula of Carlitz follows rather rapidly from a result of Weisner involving the Gaussian hypergeometric functions.

Abstract: Five-day-old, 6-h-food-deprived cockeral chicks were tested for amount of feeding behavior when alone or when separated by Plexiglas from 0-h, 6-h, or 24-h food-deprived companions (Cs), who either had food and were free to eat or had no food. The feeding of Ss varied positively with the food deprivation of Cs who could eat but not with that of noneating Cs. It was concluded that although Cs’ nonfeeding behavior may have a real facilitative effect upon Ss’ feeding, the effects of Cs’ food deprivation are mediated specifically by Cs’ feeding behavior.

Abstract: Each S was evaluated by four confederates. One evaluation was favorable and accurate, one was favorable and inaccurate, one was unfavorable and accurate, and one was unfavorable and inaccurate. After receiving these evaluations, the S rated his attraction to each of the confederates. Attraction was greater when the evaluation was favorable than when it was unfavorable and attraction was greater when the evaluation was accurate than when it was inaccurate.
