TL;DR: In this article, a wind turbine system comprising a first pair of wind turbines mounted to a support structure by a first support arm arrangement and a second pair of turbines mounted on the support structure with a second support arms arrangement is presented, where the first and second support arm arrangements are mounted at a respective yaw unit so as to yaw about the major axis of the support structures.
Abstract: The invention is directed to a wind turbine system comprising a first pair of wind turbines mounted to a support structure by a first support arm arrangement, and a second pair of wind turbines mounted to the support structure by a second support arm arrangement. The first and second support arm arrangements are mounted to the support structure at a respective yaw unit so as to yaw about the major axis of the support structure. Moreover, the wind turbine system further includes a control system that is configured to control the yaw angle of each of the first and second support arm arrangements, wherein the control system is configured to identify the presence of a predetermined shutdown condition and, in response, the control system is operable to control the yaw angles of the first support arm arrangement and the second support arm arrangement to a predetermined safe state.

23 Feb 2011TL;DR: In this paper, a method for controlling a reactive power source in a wind power plant, the method comprising the steps of providing a wind turbine reactive power control signal and providing an active power reference signal, is presented.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for controlling a reactive power source in a wind power plant, the method comprising the steps of providing a wind turbine reactive power control signal and providing an active power reference signal, said active power reference signal being a measure of an active power production of the wind power plant. A control signal for the reactive power source is generated by combining the wind turbine reactive power control signal and the active power reference signal in such a way that the control signal for the reactive power source becomes a weighted signal of the wind turbine reactive power control signal. Moreover, the present invention relates to control units and wind power plants suitable for carrying out the present invention.

25 Jun 2010TL;DR: In this article, a variable speed wind turbine is configured to provide additional electrical power to counteract non-periodic disturbances in an electrical grid, where a controller monitors events indicating a need to increase the electrical output power from the wind turbine to the electrical grid.
Abstract: A variable speed wind turbine is configured to provide additional electrical power to counteract non-periodic disturbances in an electrical grid. A controller monitors events indicating a need to increase the electrical output power from the wind turbine to the electrical grid. The controller is configured to control the wind turbine as follows: after an indicating event has been detected, the wind turbine enters an overproduction period in which the electrical output power is increased, wherein the additional electrical output power is taken from kinetic energy stored in the rotor and without changing the operation of the wind turbine to a more efficient working point. When the rotational speed of the rotor reaches a minimum value, the wind turbine enters a recovery period to re-accelerate the rotor to the nominal rotational speed while further contributing to the stability of the electrical grid by outputting at least a predetermined minimum electrical power.

22 Oct 2008TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for coupling a first drive train component of the drive train of a wind turbine to a second drive train components of a drive train and use of a Wind turbine.
Abstract: The invention relates to a wind turbine comprising a drive train. The drive train includes at least a rotor for transforming wind into rotation of a rotor hub, to provide a drive torque, a generator for transforming at least a part of the drive torque into electrical power, and at least one coupling for connecting a first drive train component to a second drive train component for transferring said drive torque between the components. The coupling comprises a first coupling part with a first coupling area, the first coupling area being connected with a second coupling area of a second coupling part, whereby the drive torque is transferred from one of the areas to the other of the areas during operation of said coupling, wherein the first coupling area is provided with a first positive engaging structure engaging a corresponding second positive engaging structure of the second coupling area, and wherein both the first and second positive engaging structures are extending inwardly from positions near or at an outer periphery of the first and second coupling parts, respectively. The invention further relates to a method for coupling a first drive train component of the drive train of a wind turbine to a second drive train component of the drive train and use of a wind turbine.

16 Sep 2010TL;DR: In this paper, a plain bearing assembly for a wind turbine includes a bearing housing and a bearing surface defining a passageway configured to receive a shaft, the bearing surface includes a stationary portion and a movable portion.
Abstract: A bearing assembly for a wind turbine includes a bearing housing and a bearing surface defining a passageway configured to receive a shaft. The bearing surface includes a stationary portion and a movable portion, the movable portion being defined by a movable member coupled to the bearing housing. The movable member is movable between a first position, wherein the movable portion is flush with the stationary portion such that the bearing surface is smooth, and a second position wherein the movable portion is spaced from the stationary portion to define a fluid cavity in the bearing surface. A method of operating a plain bearing assembly includes operating the plain bearing assembly as a hydrostatic plain bearing during low dynamic conditions and operating the plain bearing assembly as a hydrodynamic plain bearing during high dynamic conditions.
