TL;DR: In this paper, the authors look at representativeness in terms of policy dimensions and find evidence that the level of policy agreement varies across policy domains and that the policy linkage is weak on questions of taxation and government administration.
Abstract: This paper looks at representativeness in terms of policy dimensions As previous studies also have demonstrated, the analysis provides evidence that the level of policy agreement varies across policy domains The policy linkage is weak on questions of taxation and government administration Only on contemporary liberalism does the level of policy agreement begin to meet the standards of representational theory The occurrence of elections is found to be a particularly important determinant of legislative voting vis-a-vis constituency preferences California senators, elected for four-year terms, are undeniably unrepresentative to direct opinion during the first three years of their terms; representativeness increases dramatically during the final year Senators facing the possibility of having their reelection fortunes adversely affected by a presidential campaign are particularly attuned to district opinion during the final year of their terms Assemblymen, who are elected for two-year terms, are attuned to the wishes of their constituencies throughout their terms As the Founding Fathers believed, the frequency of elections conditions representatives' loyalty to the preferences of the represented

TL;DR: The construct validity of the Survey of Reading Attitudes was investigated through a principal-factor analysis of the 88 items comprising the scale, along with measures of scholastic aptitude and reading skills (vocabulary and comprehension).
Abstract: The construct validity of the Survey of Reading Attitudes was investigated through a principal-factor analysis of the 88 items comprising the scale, along with measures of scholastic aptitude and reading skills (vocabulary and comprehension). The sample included 600 students selected so that 200 (100 boys and 100 girls) were obtained from each of the three intermediate grades. The Survey was administered orally to class-size groups, but copies of the booklet were also available to students. The factor structure showed a reading achievement factor along with the following eight dimensions of reading attitude: (1) expressed reading difficulty, (2) reading as direct reinforcement, (3) reading as enjoyment, (4) alternative learning modes, (5) silent vs. oral reading, (6) reading anxiety, (7) reading group, and (8) comics.

TL;DR: In this paper, a hierarchical factor solution was obtained on WISC-R subtest intercorrelations for 150 black children and adolescents referred to a community agency for psychological assessment, which indicated an ability arrangement congruent with Vernon's (1950) structural paradigm.
Abstract: A hierarchical factor solution (Wherry & Wherry, Note 1) was obtained on WISC-R subtest intercorrelations for 150 black children and adolescents referred to a community agency for psychological assessment. Factorization was controlled by specifying the extraction of two primary factors and allowing for one higher-order factor. The factors thus obtained not only provided a parsimonious account of the common variance in the WISC-R subtests, but also indicated an ability arrangement congruent with Vernon’s (1950) structural paradigm. The ability hierarchy included a relatively weak general g factor defined by a pattern of positive loadings from all WISC-R subtests. At the primary level, there was almost complete bifurcation between the verbal and performance subtests, with the former defining a verbal-educational (v:ed) factor and the latter defining a spatial-perceptual (k:m) factor. These findings suggest that the basic ability dimensions are the same for referred black children as they are for referred whites and normals in the standardization sample.

TL;DR: This paper examined the relative impact of incumbency, candidate social status, method of recruitment, and electoral context to see whether they outweigh policy-relevant traits of candidates in deter mining success in a set of local school board elections.
Abstract: Elections are intended to provide voters a means of exercising control over public policy, but the implications of some empirical studies are that variables having little policy rele vance are often important in understanding electoral outcomes. This study examines the relative impact of incumbency, candidate social status, method of recruitment, and electoral context to see whether they outweigh policy-relevant traits of candidates in deter mining success in a set of local school board elections. Opposition proves to be largely a function of incumbency, but in contested races policy-oriented variables appear to play a key role in determining outcomes.

TL;DR: The authors compared the WISC-R and PPVT scores for a group of 65 students classified as mentally retarded, ranging in age from 7.5 to 14.5, and found that the PPVT IQ score was significantly higher than the Full Scale IQ from WISC.
Abstract: This study compared the WISC-R and PPVT scores for a group of 65 students classified as mentally retarded, ranging in age from 7.5 to 14.5. Pearson product moments (r) and correlated t values were employed in the analysis of data. The evidence from the present study indicated that for this sample of mildly retarded children and youth, the PPVT IQ score is significantly higher than the Full Scale IQ from the WISC-R. The current findings indicate that the same general pattern exists for the WISC-R and PPVT as for the WISC and PPVT scores.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined Roberts and O'Reilly's scales measuring trust in the immediate superior, desire for promotion, and perceived supervisory influence for 2700 personnel in a soft-goods company.
Abstract: This study examines Roberts and O'Reilly's scales measuring trust in the immediate superior, desire for promotion, and perceived supervisory influence for 2700 personnel in a soft-goods company. These measures are particularly important since these variables have traditionally been identified as major factors affecting communications within organizations. Results partially support use of these scales. However, methodological difficulties with these scales are also pointed out, and it is suggested that they need further development.

TL;DR: In this article, surface pressure distributions were measured for the 13% thick GA(W)-2 airfoil section fitted with 20% aileron, 25% slotted flap and 30% Fowler flap.
Abstract: Surface pressure distributions were measured for the 13% thick GA(W)-2 airfoil section fitted with 20% aileron, 25% slotted flap and 30% Fowler flap. All tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 2.2 x 10 to the 6th power and a Mach number of 0.13. Pressure distribution and force and moment coefficient measurements are compared with theoretical results for a number of cases. Agreement between theory and experiment is generally good for low angles of attack and small flap deflections. For high angles and large flap deflections where regions of separation are present, the theory is inadequate. Theoretical drag predictions are poor for all flap-extended cases.

TL;DR: The authors investigated the cognitive abilities of 238 retarded children and youth on the WISC-R and found that the relative strength and/or weakness of this sample is not restricted to either the Verbal or Performance areas.
Abstract: This study investigated the cognitive abilities of 238 retarded children and youth on the WISC-R. The sample consisted of 238 children (135 boys and 103 girls) ranging in ages from 5 yr., 7 mo. to 16 yr., 7 mo., with a mean age of 10 yr., 9 mo. The variation in subtest scores was analyzed by running an analysis of variance for correlated data for the sample’s subtest scores. Individual differences between subtest means were analyzed by Newman-Keuls test for simple effects. Students’ t and Fisher’s F ratios were used to analyze the subtest scale scores of males and females. On the WISC-R Verbal Scale, the boys scored slightly higher than the girls on each of the subtests. The girls excelled on the Coding. Greatest variation in subtest scores occurred in the Object Assembly, while the lowest variation occurred in Picture Arrangement. Evidence from the present study of mentally retarded children’s performance on the WISC-R indicated that the relative strength and/or weakness of this sample is not restricted to either the Verbal or Performance area. Differences among the WISC-R subtests for retarded subjects seem to be as great within the Verbal-Performance areas as they are between them.

TL;DR: A Wherry-Wherry hierarchical factor solution was obtained on the correlations among 11 WISC-R subtests for a sample of mentally retarded boys and girls, suggesting that the ability structure for retardates may well be more complex than the structure for normals.
Abstract: A Wherry-Wherry hierarchical factor solution was obtained on the correlations among 11 WISC-R subtests for a sample of 79 mentally retarded boys and girls The findings were not only congruent with Vernon's ability paradigm but also suggest that the ability structure for retardates may well be more complex than the structure for normals The ability hierarchy for the present sample included a general (g) factor defined by positive loadings from all 11 subtests and factors corresponding to the verbal-educational (v:ed) and spatial-perceptual (k:m) parameters In addition, a stimulus trace (ST) factor corresponding to the ability dimension described by Baumeister and Bartlett was obtained

TL;DR: In this article, the degree of bend in cyclopropane, thiirane, oxirane and aziridine was investigated through ab initio FSGO calculations, and it was demonstrated that the C-C ring bond becomes progressively more bent as the bond length is reduced.
Abstract: The nature of the bonding in the three-membered ring molecules cyclopropane, thiirane, oxirane, and aziridine has been investigated throughab initio FSGO calculations. The direct correspondence between floating spherical Gaussian orbitals and specific chemical bonds has been used to study the degree of “bond bending”. In accord with chemical intuition, it is demonstrated that the C-C ring bond becomes progressively more bent as the bond length is reduced. C-C bonds are found to be more flexible than C-N (O, S) bonds. The sizes and locations of carbon-heteroatom bond orbitals and C-H bond orbitals are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple transformation is employed to shift the finite-difference calculations to a rectangular field where square meshes are used to obtain unsteady flow solutions in a two-dimensional wavy channel.
Abstract: Pathological bulges or dilatations of an artery are found in a variety of forms at diverse locations in the vasculature. In this paper, unsteady flow solutions in a two-dimensional wavy channel are obtained using the conservative form of the vorticity transport equation. A simple transformation is employed to shift the finite-difference calculations to a rectangular field where square meshes are used. The aneurysms geometrics selected for study showed that the main kinematic and kinetic activity was concentrated in the region near the cavity at all times except near flow reversal. At this time, the vortex that was created within the cavity and that had been trapped there were ejected.
