Abstract: Sepsis occurs when the immune system responds to a localised infection at a systemic level, thereby causing tissue damage and organ dysfunction. Statins have proven health benefits in many diseases involving vascular inflammation and injury. Recent animal data suggest that the administration of a statin before a sepsis-inducing insult reduces morbidity and improves survival. The immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of statins, collectively referred to as pleiotropic effects, lend biological plausibility to such findings. Limited human data hint at reduced mortality rates in bacteraemic patients, and a reduced risk of sepsis in patients with bacterial infections concurrently taking statins. These lines of evidence point to a potential new treatment and prevention modality for sepsis. Abstract: Purpose.The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinants and correlates of return to productivity (RTP) defined here as return to paid employment and/or school four years following traumatic brain injury (TBI).Method.Participants included 46 people with TBI, part of a prospective, cohort study, and 14 friend/family member controls all employed and/or in school at time of injury or inception into the study. Variables were selected for investigation based on two models of recovery. Demographic and injury severity data including time to recover free recall were collected at time of injury, on admission to a trauma unit. Data on other variables (neuropsychological, psychological, physical, spiritual, environmental) were collected concurrent with productivity status at a mean of 4.3 years post-TBI.Results.Time to recover free recall (measured acutely), neuropsychological status, pain severity, depression, and the use of maladaptive coping behaviours were all related to productivity status (p < 0.0...

Abstract: The present study aimed to explore the biosynthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Moringa oleifera flower (MOF) extract and its antimicrobial and sensing properties. The prepared AgNPs were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), UV–visible spectral analysis (UV–vis), X-Ray Diffraction (X-RD), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) respectively. Antimicrobial and sensing properties of the prepared nanoparticles were also determined. Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) lattice of the AgNPs was observed in X-RD pattern. FTIR measurement evidenced the band pattern at 686, 1653, 2062 and 3456 cm−1 proved the presence of proteins and phenolic components in MOF responsible for reduction. TEM analysis indicated the formation of monodispersed spherical particles with 8 nm. UV–vis of the prepared AgNPs authenticated the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at 429 nm and stable for six months. AgNPs have produced highest zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 17 mm and 29 mm against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. In addition, the AgNPs effectively detected the presence of Copper ions from 1 mM to 12 mM concentrations. Copper sensitivity of these biosynthesized nanoparticles was carried out by optical sensor based SPR. Thus the obtained antimicrobial and optical properties, suggested the use of obtained AgNPs in water purification.
