TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how leaders' emotional intelligence (EI) influences subordinates' trust and examine the roles played in the process by abusive supervision (a negative leadership) and leader-member exchange (LMX) (a positive leadership).
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how leaders' emotional intelligence (EI) influences subordinates' trust and to examine the roles played in the process by abusive supervision (a negative leadership) and leader‐member exchange (LMX) (a positive leadership).Design/methodology/approach – According to revelations in the case of Foxconn's jumping events and LMX theory, this paper argues that low levels of leaders' EI affect their subordinates' perception of abusive supervision and tends to cause their mistrust of employers in return, further damaging the employer‐employee relationship. Tension will develop or be intensified among such relationships as time evolves and relationship length extends. A superior‐subordinate matching questionnaire survey was conducted among enterprises in Shenzhen, China. About 202 valid samples were eventually collected. The data were analyzed through correlation analysis, regression analysis, CFA, EFA and SEM using SPSS and LISREL.Findings – The EI of superiors ha...

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of collectivism to analyze the relationship between authority leadership and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) at both individual and team levels in Chinese organizational context is explored.
Abstract: Purpose – Authority leadership (AL) is one of the most distinctive dimensions of paternalistic leadership (PL), and it is recognized that PL is the most common leader behavior in the Chinese organizational context. Although considerable state‐of‐the‐art research work regarding the concept and dimensions of AL has been done, extensive empirical studies based on using the data from both individual and team levels to examine the effectiveness from the values viewpoint, e.g. Collectivism, attract little attention. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between AL and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). To address this issue, the role of collectivism to analyze the relationship between AL and OCB, at both individual and team levels in the Chinese organizational context, is explored.Design/methodology/approach – This paper focuses on analyzing the role of collectivism in the relationship between AL and OCB. To this end, the authors draw on a sample set of 320 supervisor‐subordinate ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore whether being a first-mover into the Chinese market through strategic alliance with host companies provides competitive advantages to the foreign entrant and understand the relevance of the first-move and internationalization process (incremental learning) for competitive advantage in China during environmental uncertainty.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore whether being a first‐mover into the Chinese market through strategic alliance with host companies provides competitive advantages to the foreign entrant. The aim is to understand the relevance of the first‐mover and internationalization process (incremental learning) for competitive advantage in China during environmental uncertainty. Thus, the author proposes that the first‐mover (foreign firm) would be able to deflect environmental uncertainty, such as the economic recession of 2008, by forming an alliance with Chinese enterprises earlier than its rivals.Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative methods for data analysis were used in support of the proposition. The sample comprises 187 foreign multinational enterprises that entered into the Chinese market through strategic alliance with local partners. The dependent variable is return on assets (ROA) of the firm. The author used the timeline as the independent variable. The longer duration implies earl...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate CEO succession in China's state-owned enterprises (SOE) from within intra-industry labor market, and find that the likelihood of intra-firm succession is negatively associated with the proportion of SOEs in a particular industry.
Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate CEO succession in China's state‐owned enterprises (SOE) from within intra‐industry labor market. One hypothesis looks at the proportion of SOEs in the industry which will be negatively associated with the likelihood of intra‐firm succession. Another proposition claims the performance gap between SOEs and the industry average level is positively related to the likelihood of intra‐firm succession.Design/methodology/approach – Secondary source data on 79 CEO successions and descriptive company measures were obtained. Background variables such as ROA and employee number were collected from the Tianjin Statistical Yearbook. Pearson and logistic regression coefficients provided tests of hypotheses.Findings – The hypotheses are strongly supported given all measures of performance. The likelihood of intra‐firm succession is negatively associated with the proportion of SOEs in a particular industry. The lower the performance of SOEs behind the industry average leve...
