TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated indoor thermal conditions in traditional Chinese shophouses (CSHs) in Malacca, Malaysia, using field measurements and focusing on the cooling effects of courtyards.
Abstract: This study investigates indoor thermal conditions in traditional Chinese shophouses (CSHs) in Malacca, Malaysia, using field measurements and focuses on the cooling effects of courtyards. The results indicate that the indoor air temperature in the living rooms of CSHs was approximately 5-6°C lower than the outdoor temperature during the day primarily due to structural cooling effects with night ventilation, whereas the indoor air temperature at night was similar to the outdoor temperature. If the thermal adaptations of the occupants were considered, then the thermal conditions in the living rooms were acceptable for most of the day. The results indicate that the front courtyards functioned as a cooling source for the surrounding spaces in the CSHs.

TL;DR: In this article, a grid cell-based analysis algorithm and its 4D simulation system are developed for visually verifying the workspace overlapping of dynamic resources to be allocated within a confined area, such as a tunnel or underground facility.
Abstract: When multiple workspaces for resources are allocated within a narrow work area, the constructability of work may deteriorate based on the conflicts that occur due to the mutual adjacency levels between the workspaces. In this situation, the identification of the workspace overlapping status is essential for establishing the optimized layout planning of workspaces. However, current 3D environments consider only physical collision and reaction by the cross verification of geometric properties to detect collisions between 3D objects. Thus, the configuration of methodology to visually check the overlapping level of workspaces with conflicting status is insufficient for a successful interference management. This study develops a new grid cell-based analysis algorithm and its 4D simulation system for visually verifying the workspace overlapping of dynamic resources to be allocated multiply within a confined area, such as a tunnel or underground facility. The proposed algorithm and system can assist in the intensive management of activities that have a high level of workspace overlap by visualizing their overlapping level.

TL;DR: In this article, the status of residential environment renewal amid discharged public bodies and community organizations in housing re-development districts, as well as the challenges and characteristics, were discussed in order to propose a modular system for future improvement.
Abstract: Ultimately, in addition to socio-economic transformation according to a low-rise residential policies paradigm, an overall comprehensive physical improvement is essential. Hence, this research discussed the status of residential environment renewal amid discharged public bodies and community organizations in housing re-development districts, as well as the challenges and characteristics, in order to propose a modular system for future improvement. From Seoul′s 15 designated areas for residential environment improvement projects and residential renewal districts, reformation districts with the most potential are narrowed to ten (1 to 10) residential areas that have the most need for improvement. From this field, Case number (7) Bon-Dong (number 434-3) and (8) SangDo-3-Dong (number 286) were targeted as ideal representatives based on their conditions.
