TL;DR: In this paper, a combination of non-thermal hurdles (ozone 1.2g/h, 10min, and lactic acid 0.5g/H) was used to preserve microbial and sensory quality of sugarcane juice during 1-month storage under refrigerated conditions; however, additional hurdles may be required for extended storage.
Abstract: Thermal processing is the most widely adopted technology for preservation of juices; however, it is associated with significant changes in nutritional quality and flavor. Combination of nonthermal hurdles (ozone 1.2 g/h, 10 min, and lactic acid 0.5%) reduced total bacterial count of sugarcane juice by 4.3 log and controlled enzymatic activity to a moderate level (reduction of 60% and 72% activity of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, respectively). Combined treatment was comparable to thermal treatment in maintaining microbial and sensory quality of sugarcane juice during 1-month storage under refrigerated conditions; however, additional hurdles may be required for extended storage.

TL;DR: The first issue of Ozone: Science & Engineering (OS&E) was published in early 1979 with Dr. L. Bollyky as the Editor-in-Chief as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The first issue of Ozone: Science & Engineering (OS&E) was published in early 1979 with Dr. L. J. Bollyky as the Editor-in-Chief. This was a milestone for the International Ozone Association enabling professional recognition of the advances in ozone technology. Since this first issue, 40 volumes of Ozone: Science & Engineering have been published containing 208 individual issues, 1463 technical articles and nearly 19,000 pages. Dr. Rip Rice became Editor-in-Chief in 1985 and continued this position until 1998. Barry Loeb has been the Editor since. Under the leadership of these gentlemen, OS&E expanded from about 70 pages per issue four times per year to 100 pages, then to six issues per year, at about 100 pages. In 2001 the dimensions of the journal were increased to accommodate even more manuscripts. In 1989, the Harvey M. Rosen Memorial Award was established to recognize the “best paper” published in Ozone: Science & Engineering during the two-year period between World Congresses. The selection ...

TL;DR: In this article, the degradation rate of carbamazepine (CBZ) was studied for various combination of O3 dosage ranging from 4.8 to 14.4 mg/h and UV intensities with varying intensity and wavelength (UVC: λ = 254nm and UVA: 352nm).
Abstract: This article presents the results of an investigation into the function of UV in a photo-assisted ozonation process for treatment of carbamazepine (CBZ) in treated domestic wastewaters. Experiments were conducted on synthetic spiked water and secondary treated municipal wastewater. Degradation of CBZ was studied for various combination of O3 dosage ranging from 4.8 to 14.4 mg/h and UV intensities with varying intensity and wavelength (UVC: λ = 254 nm and UVA: 352 nm). In synthetic spiked water, CBZ was degraded to below detectable limits within 0.5 min for ozone dose of 14.4 mg/h. The rate of degradation of CBZ increased exponentially with increase in ozone dose following a zero-order rate at each dose level. The degradation rate of CBZ in wastewater was slower compared to deionized water (DI) water by 40–75% for various doses of ozone, presumably due to the presence of organic matter remaining in treated wastewater. Optimal UV intensities for UVA and UVC were obtained as 0.62 and 0.82 mW/cm2 for ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a new kind of catalyst besides the usually used MnO2 for ozone decomposition, the sub-micrometer spherical MnCO3 was prepared via a facile co-precipitation method without additive agents at room temperature and characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TGA, XPS and H2-TPR.
Abstract: Ozone is an ubiquitous air pollutant. To develop a new kind of catalyst besides the usually used MnO2 for ozone decomposition, the sub-micrometer spherical MnCO3 was prepared via a facile co-precipitation method without additive agents at room temperature and characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TGA, XPS and H2-TPR. As-prepared MnCO3 showed better catalytic activity for ozone decomposition than that of α-MnO2, which is frequently studied in the literature. Amorphous MnOx was found on the MnCO3 surface, and it further formed when MnCO3 was exposed to the ozone flow. The MnOx layer is regarded as the active component in the catalytic ozone decomposition and crystalline MnCO3 serves as the support-stabilizing MnOx surface phase. Then MnCO3 powder was supported on non-woven fabrics through a simple and low-cost impregnation method. The MnCO3-based non-woven fabrics exhibited 100% ozone conversion over 8 days at 25 °C with inlet ozone concentration 14 ppm and space velocity 42,000 h−1. This provides an alte...

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of ozone bleaching of wheat straw soda pulp on three pulp parameters (kappa number, brightness, and viscosity) were determined using Plackett-Burman experimental design.
Abstract: Laboratory-scale studies were carried out on ozone bleaching of wheat straw soda pulp. Effects of five variables—pH, consistency, time, temperature, and ozone dose—on three pulp parameters— kappa number, brightness, and viscosity–were determined using Plackett–Burman experimental design. Results showed that for the parameter kappa number of pulp, ozone dose is the most important factor followed by pH and consistency. Pulp parameter viscosity is affected by factor pH, followed by consistency and ozone dose. Brightness of the wheat straw pulp mostly depends on factor ozone dose, followed by pH.

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of gaseous ozone treatments on melon seeds paste (nonedible part) and compared with the effect on pulp (edible part), was evaluated in terms of physicochemical (color, pH, and soluble solids content) and nutritional profiles (total phenolics, total carotenoids, and total antioxidant capacity) of processed material.
Abstract: Melon seeds are an important source of bioactive compounds, which are considered to be health beneficial. Therefore, the objective of this work was to assess the impact of gaseous ozone treatments (30 and 60 min) on melon seeds paste (nonedible part) and compare with the effect on pulp (edible part). Ozone treatments were evaluated in terms of physicochemical (color, pH, and soluble solids content) and nutritional profiles (total phenolics, total carotenoids, and total antioxidant capacity) of processed material. Results indicate that ozone has a different impact on the two fruit matrices, being seeds less affected by this preservation treatment.
