TL;DR: In this article, a field study with 2,708 Brazilian physicians, they found support to the alleviating role of LMX, but contrary to what they predicted, this effect is weaker for frontline physicians.
Abstract: During COVID-19 pandemic, physicians are being exposed to unprecedented adverse working conditions that lead to increased occurrence of burnout. While supportive leadership is considered effective in preventing burnout, little is known about the role of leadership in extreme situations. Drawing on leader-member exchange (LMX) theory, we hypothesize that high-LMX relationships lead to lower levels of burnout, as they shape physicians’ perceptions of psychosocial job demands and resources. We also contend that this effect will be stronger for frontline physicians, as they are more exposed to job stressors. In a field study with 2,708 Brazilian physicians, we found support to the alleviating role of LMX, but contrary to what we predicted, we found that this effect is weaker for frontline physicians. Overall, our findings reinforce the importance of establishing high-quality relationships between supervisors and medical staff to mitigate the experience of burnout, however, they also highlight that extreme conditions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, might constrain the beneficial effects of leadership behaviors.

Abstract: This article reflects on teaching and research in Organizational Studies (OS) in the Brazilian context. The notes worked on here are just a few among many, reinforcing the plurality of views, perspectives, and epistemological foundations that comprise the field. In this sense, we are not looking for a definition of what teaching and research are or should be; rather, we are moving towards a diverse construction of reflexive directions in the hope that these processes can become more inclusive in the face of the unequal Brazilian reality.

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that market construction is a dynamic process involving multiple actors in hegemonic and alternative positions. To understand the interconnection of these positions, the study aims to analyze how the dynamics of configuration and reconfiguration of a market frame the hegemonic and alternative positions in a multidimensional system. Using an interpretative approach, we examine the Southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul state) brewing market to describe the interconnection of craft (alternative) and mass (hegemonic) dimensions. We observe a constant process of overflowing and realignment of tensions and practices that enable the coexistence of different dimensions around a common market configuration. The results allow theorizing about a specific type of connection—covalent—between the multiple market dimensions, in which the practices of actors repel and attract both dimensions constantly, without definitive stabilization around a single dimension.

TL;DR: In this regard, the need to avoid importation of conceptual models and solve the historical tension in the Administration field has emerged in the Western world has emerged as discussed by the authors, which led to a real investigation program that shows promising signs of vitality in Latin-American OS and a strong process of institutionalization of their own paradigm.
EnglishThis paper theoretically reflects on the direction of Organizational Studies (OS) in Latin America and presents an investigation agenda to meet the needs and particularities of our region. In this regard, the need to avoid importation of conceptual models and solve the historical tension in the Administration field has emerged in the Western world. The paradigmatic break that arose in OS during the 1960s had its regional correlate in the last years. This led to a real investigation program that shows promising signs of vitality in Latin-American OS and a strong process of institutionalization of their own paradigm.

EnglishThis article aims to understand how the improvisations performed by circus artists fit into the daily routine of circus and show management. Applying the qualitative research approach to multiple case analysis, data were collected through asymmetric observations of the routine of 31 traveling circuses in southeastern Brazil and semi-structured interviews with 116 circus artists. The data were analyzed using the narrative analysis method. The improvisations occur in both the management and performance of the circus show and are linked to its power to affect (or to not affect) audiences and fill a void in the conduction of the circus performance, which creates the conditions for potential plots. Therefore, the circus spectacle morphs into various possibilities, whether shortened, expanded, rushed, or split into parts, and these assemblages maliciously allow the occurrence of improvisations and different show designs.

EnglishStudies show that the state plays a positive role in shaping conditions for entrepreneurship and promoting economicgrowth through entrepreneurial activity. However, the question of how state intervention in entrepreneurshipis justified in neoliberal regimes has received scant attention, although it can legitimize public policies. We examinethe entrepreneurial slant of the Production and Commerce Development Corporation of Chile (CORFO), whichimplements regulations and grants financial support to startups. Analyzing interviews with CORFO’s state officials, public statements, and official documentation, we review the advent of state-led entrepreneurial policy andexplore the post-dictatorial government’s principles justifying current state policy. This policy relies on doublede-politicization: i) divesting entrepreneurship from political affiliation and ii) propagating a meritocratic rhetoricof social and individual development, oblivious of structural inequalities. We argue that this is functional for thisregime as long as it guarantees state intervention in entrepreneurship as a policy of common good.

Abstract: EnglishThe following texts, versions of those presented at a free session of the Sixth Brazilian Congress of Organizational Studies (CBEO), view collective self-criticism as essential to the evolution of researchers of Organizational Studies (OS), a field that needs to forge desirable horizons for itself. They also invite peers to reflect on our recent trajectory, in particular on: (1) inheritances, contrasts and demarcations regarding OS’ parent discipline, Administration; (2) a possibility of growth when we are touched by academic virtue; (3) the challenges and propositions which may arise from a recent editorial experience; and, finally, (4) new work directions for a research group to become more effective and articulate in its teaching, research and outreach actions. Abstract: EnglishWe live in a world where we are experiencing an increasing number of environmental disasters, social injustice, corporate scandals, and questionable leadership ethics. The issue I would liketo address in this article is how we, as educators and researchers, might respond to or engageproactively with these issues. One approach is encouraging our students to become more reflexive, and to become more reflexive ourselves as researchers. I believe that reflexivity is becoming an increasingly important resource in organization studies. Defined as questioning taken-for-granted assumptions, practices, policies, and so on, reflexivity offers a way of developing more critical and responsible approaches to our intellectual strategies and to practical activities within the academic and corporate world. I will begin by summarizing some of the criticisms of business school education and the challenges we face as researchers and go on to define and discuss how reflexivity can help us engage with these criticisms in a productive manner. portuguesVivemos em um mundo onde estamos experimentando um numero crescente de desastres ambientais, injustica social, escândalos corporativos e liderancas com etica questionavel. Within this crisis scenario, an engaged university has an important role to play in a regional context in addressing not only health issues, but also any resultant social and economic problems. An engaged university needs to take actions that go beyond its traditional missions of education and research - it has to deliver knowledge to society. This paper analyzes a university-community project in Brazil to identify the necessary elements that help promote a regionally-engaged university: the SOS-PME Advisory Network project, which was originally designed to assist SMEsduring the crisis. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study whether financial and accounting disclosure affect firm value by focusing on the full adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Brazil in 2010 and find that IFRS adoption has a positive impact of approximately 30 percentage points on Tobin's Q and 26 percent on market-to-book ratios for firms in the lower governance tiers.
Abstract: EnglishWe study whether financial and accounting disclosure affect firm value by focusing on the full adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Brazil in 2010. We compare firms with ex-ante lower accounting quality (firms in the Regular and Level 1 tiers of corporate governance) with otherwise similar firms that had already complied with higher-quality accounting standards (firms in the Level 2 and Novo Mercado tiers). IFRS adoption has a positive impact of approximately 30 percentage points on Tobin´s Q and 26 percentage points on market-to-book ratios for firms in the lower governance tiers, and substantially reduces the valuation gap between firms in the higher and lower tiers of corporate governance. This reduction in the valuation gap after IFRS adoption is explained by the relative increase in foreign ownership and stock liquidity of firms in the lower governance tiers. portuguesEstudamos se o nivel de divulgacao contabil e financeiro afeta o valor da firma, focando a adocao do padrao IFRS no Brasil em 2010.

TL;DR: In this paper, a self-critical retrospection exercise about what Organizational Studies are within the Latin American context is performed, in search of a "friction" that gives continuity to that path of growth.
EnglishThe aim of this paper is to do a self-critical retrospection exercise about what Organizational Studies (OS) are within the Latin American context. Their development and incidence in the region have increased and consolidated --although not in all countries at the same level and extent --as a critical field of knowledge to study organizations. However, there are some unresolved matters that need to be addressed and discussed; that is why Wittgenstein's (1986) expression is retaken to formulate some fundamental questions regarding the OS identity and projection in the region, in search of a "friction" that gives continuity to that path of growth. In addition, some constitutive aspects of OS are discussed. Reflections will allow organization experts and researchers not only to delve into this field of knowledge, but also to build a stance of their own on OS in the region.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the possibilities that Viveiros de Castro's concept of Amerindian perspectivism offers to organizational studies, and reflect on the consequences that our onto-epistemological choices will have on our research from the Other's point of view.
Abstract: This essay discusses the possibilities that Viveiros de Castro's concept of Amerindian perspectivism offers to Organizational Studies. Oswald de Andrdade's Anthropophagous Manifesto is the guiding thread of our investigation. Amerindian perspectivism suggests a reflexive shift to the position occupied by the object of inquiry which thus becomes the subject from which we must question our own premises. What matters is knowing how our subject / former object perceives our categories / concepts created to describe it. For Viveiros de Castro, the reflexive displacement should occur considering an intentional equivocity. Therefore, we must reflect on the consequences that our onto-epistemological choices will have on our research from the Other's point of view. The concepts of reflexive displacement and intentional equivocity have much to contribute to the construction of the other in EOR and to the concept of border thinking in decolonial studies.

TL;DR: In this article, the amount of damage from the dysfunctional behavior can affect the probability of the domino effect, and the acceptability of the dysfunctional behaviour is explained by the consumer's ethics level, perception of risk in replicating the behavior, and social distance.
Abstract: The interaction between dysfunctional customers and other customers can cause the domino effect (i.e., the dissemination of a dysfunctional client’s behavior to other nearby clients). However, it is not understood if this effect will manifest under certain levels of damage to the company. This study thus aims to verify if the amount of damage from the dysfunctional behavior can affect the probability of the domino effect. Through five experimental studies, we prove that the amount of damage influences the likelihood of dysfunctional behavior replication. Moreover, we found that this effect is explained by the acceptability of the dysfunctional behavior. We also identify that a consumer’s ethics level, perception of risk in replicating the behavior, and social distance acts as boundary conditions of the amount of damage effect on the probability of replicating the dysfunctional behavior.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze how temporal perceptions influence pleasure and suffering in the work of prostitutes in Belo Horizonte (MG). A descriptive and qualitative case study was carried out. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 professionals from "battle hotels" and analyzed using content analysis. The interviewed prostitutes associated time as a resource, and this was linked to experiences of pleasure and suffering, in the sense that the effective management of time generatedmoney which was the main source of pleasure from their work . The working time of the prostitutes was also a source of suffering because they normalized or accepted discomfort from their work and the consequences that it entailed.

Abstract: [ ]the future of work today is deeply uncertain, and this uncertainty must be acknowledged without letting it paralyze the sociological imagination or depoliticize social action While the front line often receives attention and applause when it consists of medical workers (and without necessarily translating into material benefits for those workers), precarious workers in transport and delivery, food and agricultural production, and other manual-labor sectors constitute an "invisible front line " In many cases, such as industrial food production, these workers exist within spaces that are at risk for infection and many pay with their lives (Waltenberg, Victoroff, Rose et al , 2020) [ ]in economies with large informal sectors, small-business retailers and other informal jobs have continued in the face of crisis, with the workers therein assuming similar risks [ ]as unemployment figures soar to unprecedented levels in much of the world (Blustein et al , 2020;Coibion, Gorodnichenko, & Weber, 2020), the boundary between work and life becomes a wall separating bare life from the possibility of materially earning a living

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of consumers' previous knowledge on post-decision information search were studied and it was shown that consumers search for more information at the postdecision stage, even when the decision cannot be modified.
Abstract: Nowadays consumers have more previous knowledge about products and services before making decisions. This study sheds light on the effects of consumers’ previous knowledge on post-decision information search. Previous studies argue that cognitive dissonance and feelings of regret or dissatisfaction elicit this search. However, we show through one experimental and two correlational studies that this view is incomplete. Our findings indicate that knowledgeable consumers search for more information at the post-decision stage, even when the decision cannot be modified. This main effect is stronger (weaker) for maximizers (satisficers). Also, cognitive dissonance affects the post-decision information search behavior. Therefore, we suggest a new variable, consumers’ previous knowledge, for consideration in the post-decision information search model.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the relationship between portfolio diversity and the firm's innovative performance, especially when RD the study also identifies the nature of relationship between such moderators, and reveal an inverted U-shaped curvilinear relationship between APD and innovative performance.
Abstract: The main objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between Alliance Portfolio Diversity (APD) and the firm's innovative performance, especially when RD the study also identifies the nature of the relationship between such moderators. It applies econometric methods to a database comprised of 13,020 companies from Brazilian industry. The results reveal an inverted U-shaped curvilinear relationship between APD and innovative performance, as well as the effective positive moderation of this relationship by the RDCAP and the SCA. This research contributes to the literature on firm knowledge, especially theories of open innovation and absorptive capacity (AC). The former is progressing to emerging economic contexts and the second, contributing a new way of understanding AC by investigating its spatial dimensions, in addition to the skills and competencies dimensions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated which response strategies are employed to protect organizational reputation in the online environment, and found that companies prefer to apologize, hide the original message, respond inbox, or simply ignore the negative comments from consumers.
Abstract: The digital age has changed how brands communicate and interact with their consumers, and intensified the influence of negative word of mouth on a brand’s reputation. This study investigates which response strategies are employed to protect organizational reputation in the online environment. Accordingly, data were collected in two ways. First, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with brand managers to identify strategies to minimize negative word of mouth in social media. Second, social media content of brands managed by the agencies were collected to determine if any other strategies were carried out. As a result in negative word of mouth companies prefer to apologize, hide the original message, respond inbox, or simply ignore the negative comments from consumers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of loss aversion and mental accounting in POS materials on supermarket sales was investigated and the results revealed a positive and significant effect on sales only for the cognitive bias applied to the POS materials.
Abstract: Competition among different brands in supermarkets motivates consumer goods companies to develop and implement and activate merchandising materials at the point of sales (POS). These merchandising materials attempt to influence shoppers and promote sales. On the other hand, behavioral economics studies the decision-making of individuals based on their preferences and beliefs, influenced by cognitivebias. This study attempts to understand the effect of loss aversion and mental accounting in POS materials on supermarket sales. We conduct two experiments with a consumer brand in a supermarket chain. The results reveal a positive and significant effect on sales only for the cognitive bias of loss aversion, applied to the POS materials.
