TLDR
In this article, the authors constructed a series of yearly sunspot numbers as observed by eye in remote times and recorded in historical documents covering the period 165 BC-1918 AD and found a 250-year cycle which appears to have a solar origin.Abstract:
[1] The state of the sun strongly affects terrestrial phenomena. While the eleven-year solar cycle was recognized in the XIX century, the lack of direct data concerning our star in historical times has made it difficult to determine the characteristics of solar variability on a secular scale. We here construct a series of yearly sunspot numbers as observed by eye in remote times and recorded in historical documents covering the period 165 BC–1918 AD. Using different spectral analysis methods, we find a 250-year cycle which appears to have a solar origin.read more

A History of Solar Activity over Millennia
TL;DR: A review of present knowledge of the long-term behavior of solar activity on a multi-millennial timescale, as reconstructed using the indirect proxy method is presented in this paper, along with an overview of special indices used to quantify different aspects of variable solar activity, with special emphasis upon sunspot number.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors revisited all existing evidence and datasets, both direct and indirect, to assess the level of solar activity during the Maunder minimum, and concluded that solar activity was indeed at an exceptionally low level during this period.

Historical sunspot observations: A review
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the possibilities to use these records to study the long-term change in the Sun and discuss some mistakes, pending tasks and minor improvements related to sunspot observations.

Flood response to rainfall variability during the last 2000 years inferred from the Taravilla Lake record (Central Iberian Range, Spain)
TL;DR: In this article, a sedimentological, geochemical and palynological study of the Taravilla Lake sequence (Central Iberian Range, NE Spain) provides a detailed record of allochthonous terrigenous layers that intercalate within the lacustrine sediments over the last 2000 years.

Oscillatory modes of extended Nile River records (A.D. 622–1922)
TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply Singular-Spectrum Analysis (SSA) and Multi-Taper Method (MTM) to fill the gaps and locate interannual and interdecadal periodicities.

Spectrum estimation and harmonic analysis
TL;DR: In this article, a local eigenexpansion is proposed to estimate the spectrum of a stationary time series from a finite sample of the process, which is equivalent to using the weishted average of a series of direct-spectrum estimates based on orthogonal data windows to treat both bias and smoothing problems.

Singular-spectrum analysis: a toolkit for short, noisy chaotic signals
TL;DR: Singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is used in this article to estimate the lagged-covariance matrix of the processes studied, which is the basis of SSA.

Group Sunspot Numbers: A New Solar Activity Reconstruction
TL;DR: The Group Sunspot Number (GSN) as discussed by the authors is a time series that uses the number of sunspot groups observed, rather than groups and individual sunspots, to construct the time series.

Monte Carlo SSA: Detecting irregular oscillations in the Presence of Colored Noise
Myles R. Allen,Leonard A. Smith +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the Monte Carlo Singular Systems Analysis (SSA) algorithm is used to identify intermittent or modulated oscillations in geophysical and climatic time series, and the results show that the strength of the evidence provided by SSA for interannual and interdecadal climate oscillations has been considerably overestimated.

The Role of the Sun in Climate Change
TL;DR: This article reviewed the physics of the concept of solar forcing, from its beginnings in the early 1800's and apparent success in the 1870's, to its near demise in the 1950's and recent resurgence.
