A universal statistical model for texture images in the context of an overcomplete complex wavelet transform is presented, demonstrating the necessity of subgroups of the parameter set by showing examples of texture synthesis that fail when those parameters are removed from the set.
Abstract
We present a universal statistical model for texture images in the context of an overcomplete complex wavelet transform. The model is parameterized by a set of statistics computed on pairs of coefficients corresponding to basis functions at adjacent spatial locations, orientations, and scales. We develop an efficient algorithm for synthesizing random images subject to these constraints, by iteratively projecting onto the set of images satisfying each constraint, and we use this to test the perceptual validity of the model. In particular, we demonstrate the necessity of subgroups of the parameter set by showing examples of texture synthesis that fail when those parameters are removed from the set. We also demonstrate the power of our model by successfully synthesizing examples drawn from a diverse collection of artificial and natural textures.

Operational Deflection Shape Extraction from Broadband Events of an Aircraft Component Using 3D-DIC in Magnified Images

TL;DR: The combination of phase-based motion magnification and 3D-DIC has been employed to evaluate the modal behaviour of an aircraft cabin under random excitation, focused on the passenger window area due to its significance to the structural integrity as a discontinuity of the peel.

Upscaling Strategy to Simulate Permeability in a Carbonate Sample Using Machine Learning and 3D Printing

TL;DR: In this article, a multiscale approach to simulate permeability and porosity in heterogeneous carbonate samples using 3D X-ray computed tomography images is introduced, which is then used to upscale rock properties simulations from fine to coarse scale.

Neural sources of letter and Vernier acuity.

TL;DR: High-density EEG recordings were used to ask whether the underlying neural sources are common as suggested by the psychophysics or distinct among letters and Vernier offsets, and found that the two tasks are subserved by a common network of visual areas.

Maximum-Likelihood Based Synthesis of Volumetric Textures From a 2D Sample

TL;DR: A genuine 3D texture synthesis algorithm based on a probabilistic 2D Markov random field conceptualization, capable of capturing the visual characteristics of a texture into a unique statistical texture model is proposed.

A theory for multiresolution signal decomposition: the wavelet representation

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that the difference of information between the approximation of a signal at the resolutions 2/sup j+1/ and 2 /sup j/ (where j is an integer) can be extracted by decomposing this signal on a wavelet orthonormal basis of L/sup 2/(R/sup n/), the vector space of measurable, square-integrable n-dimensional functions.

Stochastic Relaxation, Gibbs Distributions, and the Bayesian Restoration of Images

TL;DR: The analogy between images and statistical mechanics systems is made and the analogous operation under the posterior distribution yields the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate of the image given the degraded observations, creating a highly parallel ``relaxation'' algorithm for MAP estimation.

Information Theory and Statistical Mechanics. II

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider statistical mechanics as a form of statistical inference rather than as a physical theory, and show that the usual computational rules, starting with the determination of the partition function, are an immediate consequence of the maximum-entropy principle.

Relations between the statistics of natural images and the response properties of cortical cells.

TL;DR: The results obtained with six natural images suggest that the orientation and the spatial-frequency tuning of mammalian simple cells are well suited for coding the information in such images if the goal of the code is to convert higher-order redundancy into first- order redundancy.
