The effects of relative node velocity, node density and communication range on the communication cost and scalability of a routing protocol are demonstrated.
Abstract
One of the main challenges in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is the routing of calls to mobile users moving frequently. The major tasks of routing are to find a route to a terminal quickly, a process often called ROUTE DISCOVERY, and to maintain and repair the active routes, a process often called ROUTE MAINTENANCE/REPAIR. ROUTE MAINTENANCE/REPAIR is a vital process as it deals with the salvage of calls when a link failure along a data route occurs. Data losses or failures in turn impact the end-to-end perceived quality of the application. In this paper we analyse through simulations various ROUTE REPAIR techniques tailored for operation in MANETS and demonstrate the effects of relative node velocity, node density and communication range on the communication cost and scalability of a routing protocol.

PATCH: a novel local recovery mechanism for mobile ad-hoc networks

TL;DR: This paper proposes a proximity approach to connection healing (PATCH) local recovery mechanism, which aims to reduce the control overhead and achieve fast recovery when route breakage happens and it is shown that PATCH is simple, robust and effective.

An analytical model for measuring QoS in ad-hoc wireless networks

TL;DR: An analytical model for evaluating the quality of service (QoS) in wireless ad-hoc networks is developed and the transmission blocking probability is derived as a function of the number of nodes, the network density and parameters of a Markov chain model for the multiple user channel access protocol.

ARM: Anticipated route maintenance scheme in location-aided mobile ad hoc networks

TL;DR: A distributed algorithm that anticipates route failure and performs preventative route maintenance using location information to increase a route lifespan is presented and compared the performance of two protocols, pure dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol and DSR with ARM.
