TLDR
A new window-based method for correspondence search using varying support-weights based on color similarity and geometric proximity to reduce the image ambiguity and outperforms other local methods on standard stereo benchmarks.
Abstract
We present a new window-based method for correspondence search using varying support-weights. We adjust the support-weights of the pixels in a given support window based on color similarity and geometric proximity to reduce the image ambiguity. Our method outperforms other local methods on standard stereo benchmarks.

Guided Image Filtering

TL;DR: The guided filter is a novel explicit image filter derived from a local linear model that can be used as an edge-preserving smoothing operator like the popular bilateral filter, but it has better behaviors near edges.

Stereo Processing by Semiglobal Matching and Mutual Information

TL;DR: This paper describes the Semi-Global Matching (SGM) stereo method, which uses a pixelwise, Mutual Information based matching cost for compensating radiometric differences of input images and demonstrates a tolerance against a wide range of radiometric transformations.

Secrets of optical flow estimation and their principles

TL;DR: It is discovered that “classical” flow formulations perform surprisingly well when combined with modern optimization and implementation techniques, and while median filtering of intermediate flow fields during optimization is a key to recent performance gains, it leads to higher energy solutions.

Evaluation of Cost Functions for Stereo Matching

TL;DR: This paper evaluates the insensitivity of different matching costs with respect to radiometric variations of the input images with a local, a semi-global, and a global stereo method.

Normalized cuts and image segmentation

TL;DR: This work treats image segmentation as a graph partitioning problem and proposes a novel global criterion, the normalized cut, for segmenting the graph, which measures both the total dissimilarity between the different groups as well as the total similarity within the groups.

Bilateral filtering for gray and color images

TL;DR: In contrast with filters that operate on the three bands of a color image separately, a bilateral filter can enforce the perceptual metric underlying the CIE-Lab color space, and smooth colors and preserve edges in a way that is tuned to human perception.
