[Read at a RESEARCH METHODS MEETING of the SOCIETY, April 8th, 1964, Professor D. V. LINDLEY in the Chair] SUMMARY In the analysis of data it is often assumed that observations Yl, Y2, *-, Yn are independently normally distributed with constant variance and with expectations specified by a model linear in a set of parameters 0. In this paper we make the less restrictive assumption that such a normal, homoscedastic, linear model is appropriate after some suitable transformation has been applied to the y's. Inferences about the transformation and about the parameters of the linear model are made by computing the likelihood function and the relevant posterior distribution. The contributions of normality, homoscedasticity and additivity to the transformation are separated. The relation of the present methods to earlier procedures for finding transformations is discussed. The methods are illustrated with examples.read more

Optimal fetal growth for the Caucasian singleton and assessment of appropriateness of fetal growth: an analysis of a total population perinatal database
TL;DR: Proportion of optimal birth weight (length or head circumference) provides a method of assessing appropriateness of intrauterine growth that is less dependent on the health of the reference population or the quality of their morphometric data than is percentile position on a birth weight distribution.

Towards a framework for predicting impacts of land-use on recharge: 1. A review of recharge studies in Australia
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the potential for developing generic relationships from measurements of recharge made in previous studies that would allow the assessment of the impact of land-use change on recharge.

Reference values for analytes of 24-h urine collections known to be complete.
TL;DR: Differences when compared with the between person variation in the analytes studied have implications for the precision with which a result from a single specimen can be used to place an individual within a distribution of values for epidemiological purposes.

Genetic parameters of growth curve parameters in male and female chickens

TL;DR: Sexual dimorphism of body weight at 8 and 36 weeks and of L, K and T(I) was moderately heritable and the genetic parameters of growth curve parameters in males and females, considering them as sex-limited traits were estimated with REML and an animal model.

The use of transformations.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarize the transformations which have been used on raw statistical data, with particular reference to analysis of variance, and the usual purpose of the transformation is to change the scale of the measurements in order to make the analysis more valid.

One Degree of Freedom for Non-Additivity
TL;DR: The present writer is usually much more concerned with and worried about non-additivity, and until recently has suffered from the lack of a systematic way to seek it out, and then to measure it.
