TLDR
The effects of experimental variables on assays based upon the use of either ferricytochrome c or nitro blue tetrazolium are investigated to help investigators to avoid the numerous potential pitfalls which necessarily surround these assay methods.

The antioxidant action of N-acetylcysteine: its reaction with hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, superoxide, and hypochlorous acid.

TL;DR: N-acetylcysteine is a powerful scavenger of hypochlorous acid (H--OCl); low concentrations are able to protect alpha 1-antiproteinase against inactivation by HOCl.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of heavy metal ion excess on sunflower leaves: evidence for involvement of oxidative stress

TL;DR: Results indicate that excess Fe(II), Cu( II) or Cd(II) ions produce oxidative damage in plant leaves.
Journal ArticleDOI

Differential antioxidative responses to cadmium in roots and leaves of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Azad)

TL;DR: Roots and leaves of pea plants responded differently to Cd with reference to the induction of enhanced activities of most of the enzymes monitored in the present study, and increased activities of antioxidative enzymes in Cd-treated plants suggest that they have some additive function in the mechanism of metal tolerance inpea plants.
Journal ArticleDOI

Marked reduction of free radical generation and contractile dysfunction by antioxidant therapy begun at the time of reperfusion. Evidence that myocardial "stunning" is a manifestation of reperfusion injury.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a substantial portion of the damage responsible for myocardial stunning develops in the initial seconds of reperfusion and can be prevented by antioxidant therapy started just before reftow, providing direct evidence for a causal role of reactive oxygen species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Overexpression of Superoxide Dismutase Protects Plants from Oxidative Stress (Induction of Ascorbate Peroxidase in Superoxide Dismutase-Overexpressing Plants)

TL;DR: Results indicate that transgenic tobacco plants that overexpress pea Cu/Zn SOD II can compensate for the increased levels of SOD with increased expression of the H2O2-scavenging enzyme APX.

Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent

TL;DR: Procedures are described for measuring protein in solution or after precipitation with acids or other agents, and for the determination of as little as 0.2 gamma of protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

Superoxide Dismutase AN ENZYMIC FUNCTION FOR ERYTHROCUPREIN (HEMOCUPREIN)

TL;DR: The demonstration that O2·- can reduce ferricytochrome c and tetranitromethane, and that superoxide dismutase, by competing for the superoxide radicals, can markedly inhibit these reactions, is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Superoxide dismutase: Improved assays and an assay applicable to acrylamide gels☆

TL;DR: The staining procedure for localizing superoxide dismutase on polyacrylamide electrophoretograms has been applied to extracts obtained from a variety of sources and could thus be assayed either in crude extracts or in purified protein fractions.
Journal ArticleDOI

The biology of oxygen radicals

TL;DR: The reactive superoxide radical, O2-, formerly of concern only to radiation chemists and radiobiologists, is now understood to be a normal product of the biological reduction of molecular oxygen.

Biology of disease: free radicals and tissue injury.

TL;DR: This review surveys cellular sources of free radicals and the reactions they can undergo and discusses cellular defenses and adaptive mechanisms.
