Bioreceptivity of building stones: a review.

TLDR
It is suggested that a standardized laboratory protocol for evaluating stone bioreceptivity and definition of a stone biOREceptivity index are required to enable creation of a database on the primary bioreCEPTivity of stone materials.

TiO2-based nanocoatings for preserving architectural stone surfaces: An overview

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the latest developments in a specific area of the maintenance of architectural surfaces: the use of multifunctional (self-cleaning, de-polluting, biocidal) nanocoatings based on titanium dioxide on architectural stone surfaces.
Journal ArticleDOI

Microbial deterioration and sustainable conservation of stone monuments and buildings

TL;DR: In this article, the role of microbes in the deterioration processes, the biochemical mechanisms involved and possible strategies for sustainable conservation of stone monuments and buildings are discussed, as well as how microbes contribute to the biodeterioration processes through their activities and biogeochemical cycles of elements.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of inhibitory effect of TiO2 nanocoatings against microalgal growth on clay brick façades under weak UV exposure conditions

TL;DR: In this article, the biocide effect of TiO2 coatings applied on clay brick specimens under weak UV radiation was assessed, and it was shown that under optimal UV exposure conditions for the growth of microalgae it efficaciously prevented the adhesion of these microorganisms on the treated substrates through the formation of a superficial water film.
Journal ArticleDOI

Algal 'greening' and the conservation of stone heritage structures.

TL;DR: The findings suggested that greening had little impact on the physical integrity of stone; indeed the influence of algae on moisture regimes in stone may have a broadly bioprotective action.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polyextremotolerant black fungi: oligotrophism, adaptive potential, and a link to lichen symbioses.

TL;DR: Lichen-forming fungi are adapted to growth on exposed surfaces with low availability of nutrients and efficiently use protective molecules to tolerate frequent periods of extreme stress, which contributes to ecological flexibility of black fungi.

Biodeterioration of stone: a review

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive overview to the biodeterioration of stone and its practical relevance for the conservation is presented. But, the authors do not consider the effects of the microbial contamination on cleaning procedures, protective treatments as well as biocidal applications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Endolithic Microorganisms in the Antarctic Cold Desert

TL;DR: In the frigid desert of the Antarctic dry valleys there are no visible life forms on the surface of the soil or rocks, yet in certain rock types a narrow subsurface zone has a favorable microclimate and is colonized by microorganisms.

Discussion of spectrophotometric determination of marine-plant pigments, with revised equations for ascertaining chlorophylls and carotenoids

TL;DR: McAllister et al. as discussed by the authors presented a revised set of equations for the determination of plant chlorophylls and a new equation for the approximate estimation of plant carotenoids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Life on the rocks.

TL;DR: Subaerial biofilm metabolic activity centres on retention of water, protecting the cells from fluctuating environmental conditions and solar radiation as well as prolonging their vegetative life, which manifests itself as bio-weathering of rock surfaces.
