Black holes: The membrane paradigm

TLDR
In this article, the physics of black holes are explored in terms of a membrane paradigm which treats the event horizon as a two-dimensional membrane embedded in three-dimensional space, and a 3+1 formalism is used to split Schwarzschild space-time and the laws of physics outside a nonrotating hole.
Abstract
The physics of black holes is explored in terms of a membrane paradigm which treats the event horizon as a two-dimensional membrane embedded in three-dimensional space. A 3+1 formalism is used to split Schwarzschild space-time and the laws of physics outside a nonrotating hole, which permits treatment of the atmosphere in terms of the physical properties of thin slices. The model is applied to perturbed slowly or rapidly rotating and nonrotating holes, and to quantify the electric and magnetic fields and eddy currents passing through a membrane surface which represents a stretched horizon. Features of tidal gravitational fields in the vicinity of the horizon, quasars and active galalctic nuclei, the alignment of jets perpendicular to accretion disks, and the effects of black holes at the center of ellipsoidal star clusters are investigated. Attention is also given to a black hole in a binary system and the interactions of black holes with matter that is either near or very far from the event horizon. Finally, a statistical mechanics treatment is used to derive a second law of thermodynamics for a perfectly thermal atmosphere of a black hole.

Shear Waves, Sound Waves On A Shimmering Horizon

TL;DR: In this paper, a conserved holographic stress tensor is defined on the stretched horizon and the authors show that such a tensor satisfies the required constitutive relation on the horizon using Einstein equations.

Force-free Waves and Black Hole Magnetospheric Causality

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the properties of the information that can be transported along the characteristics of the two modes, the Alfven and fast modes, in force-free black hole magnetospheres.

Gravitational and magnetosonic waves in gamma-ray bursts

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated whether a fraction of the GW energy is transferred to magnetohydrodynamic waves in the magnetized plasma wind around the binary and found that fast magneto-acoustic waves grow, with amplitudes proportional to the GW amplitude and frequency and the strength of the background magnetic field.

Gamma-Ray Binaries: Stable Mass Transfer from a Neutron Star to a Black Hole

TL;DR: In this paper, a new class of mass-exchanging binary systems was proposed, in which a neutron star transfers mass to a black hole, and the phase of mass transfer is surprisingly stable and lasts for several thousands of orbital revolutions (about a minute).

Electron-positron outflow from black holes.

TL;DR: In this article, a rapidly rotating black hole of mass M produces outflow from initially electrostatic equilibrium with normalized isotropic emission approximately 10(48) B/B(c))(2)(M/7M)(2)sin (2) theta erg/s, where B(c) = 4.4x10(13) G.
