Brain-heart communication: Evidence for "central pacemaker" oscillations with a dominant frequency at 0.1Hz in the cingulum.

TLDR
The results suggest that slow vascular and neural BOLD oscillations can be differentiated and that intrinsic oscillations (0.1Hz) originate in the cingulum or its close vicinity and contribute to heart rate variability (HRV).

How heart rate variability affects emotion regulation brain networks.

TL;DR: The novel hypothesis that by inducing oscillatory activity in the brain, high amplitude oscillations in heart rate enhance functional connectivity in brain networks associated with emotion regulation is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Heart rate variability (HRV): From brain death to resonance breathing at 6 breaths per minute.

TL;DR: The reviewed findings impressively demonstrate that central nervous system function modifies the rhythm of the heart and vice versa, suggesting that HRV could be a useful indicator of central-autonomic integration and that 0.1 Hz oscillations play a major role in physical and mental health via optimizing energy supply.
Journal ArticleDOI

Uncovering complex central autonomic networks at rest: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study on complex cardiovascular oscillations

TL;DR: Group-wise multi-level fMRI analyses in conjunction with complex instantaneous heartbeat correlates revealed the existence of a specialized brain network, i.e. a complex central autonomic network (CCAN), reflecting what the authors refer to as complex autonomic control of the heart.

Respiratory regulation & interactions with neuro-cognitive circuitry.

TL;DR: Evidence gathered across multiple species demonstrating the links between respiration, entrainment of brain activity and functional relevance for affecting mood and cognition is reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Heart rate variability and slow-paced breathing:when coherence meets resonance

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors focus on the importance of reducing breathing rate at the resonant frequency (~ 0.1 Hz), which increases cardiac oscillations, thus reflecting improved vagally-mediated heart rate variability and baroreflex sensitivity.

Manual for the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory

TL;DR: The STAI as mentioned in this paper is an indicator of two types of anxiety, the state and trait anxiety, and measure the severity of the overall anxiety level, which is appropriate for those who have at least a sixth grade reading level.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hierarchical Grouping to Optimize an Objective Function

TL;DR: In this paper, a procedure for forming hierarchical groups of mutually exclusive subsets, each of which has members that are maximally similar with respect to specified characteristics, is suggested for use in large-scale (n > 100) studies when a precise optimal solution for a specified number of groups is not practical.

Automated Anatomical Labeling of Activations in SPM Using a Macroscopic Anatomical Parcellation of the MNI MRI Single-Subject Brain

TL;DR: An anatomical parcellation of the spatially normalized single-subject high-resolution T1 volume provided by the Montreal Neurological Institute was performed and it is believed that this tool is an improvement for the macroscopical labeling of activated area compared to labeling assessed using the Talairach atlas brain.

A Practical Guide to Wavelet Analysis.

TL;DR: In this article, a step-by-step guide to wavelet analysis is given, with examples taken from time series of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
Journal ArticleDOI

Functional connectivity in the motor cortex of resting human brain using echo-planar MRI.

TL;DR: It is concluded that correlation of low frequency fluctuations, which may arise from fluctuations in blood oxygenation or flow, is a manifestation of functional connectivity of the brain.
