Canopy tree development and undergrowth bamboo dynamics in old-growth Abies-Betula forests in southwestern China: a 12-year study

TLDR
Interactions between forest canopy characteristics and plants in the forest understory are important determinants of forest community structure and dynamics and contribute to the coexistence of A. faxoniana and B. utilis in old-growth forests in southwestern China.

Forest turnover rates follow global and regional patterns of productivity

TL;DR: Using a global database, it is found that forest turnover rates parallel broad-scale patterns of net primary productivity and are broadly similar to the patterns of turnover in populations of plant organs (leaves and roots) found in other studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mapping understory vegetation using phenological characteristics derived from remotely sensed data

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used understory bamboo in Wolong Nature Reserve, China as a case study to develop and test an effective and practical remote sensing approach for mapping understory vegetation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Climate-change impacts on understorey bamboo species and giant pandas in China’s Qinling Mountains

TL;DR: In this paper, a substantial climate-mediated reduction in the distributional ranges of three dominant bamboo species in the Qinling Mountains over the twenty-first century; plants that comprise almost the entire diet of the panda population in the region.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bamboo dominance reduces tree regeneration in a disturbed tropical forest.

TL;DR: It is concluded that undergrowth bamboos and their litter affect tree seedling regeneration differently from mixed-tree litter, causing changes in plant community composition and species diversity.

Light regimes beneath closed canopies and tree-fall gaps in temperate and tropical forests

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared light regimes beneath closed canopies and tree-fall gaps for five temperate and tropical forests using fish-eye photography of intact forest canopie and a model for calculating light penetration through idealized gaps.

Gap Regeneration in Some Old-growth Forests of the Eastern United States

TL;DR: In this article, tree replacement in gaps was studied in old-growth mesic forest stands in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the southern Appalachian Mountains in western and central Appalachia.
