Real-time fMRI neurofeedback: Progress and challenges
James Sulzer,Sven Haller,Frank Scharnowski,Frank Scharnowski,Nikolaus Weiskopf,Niels Birbaumer,Maria Laura Blefari,A. B. Bruehl,Leonardo G. Cohen,R. C. deCharms,Roger Gassert,Rainer Goebel,Uwe Herwig,Uwe Herwig,Stephen M. LaConte,David Edmund Johannes Linden,Andreas R. Luft,Erich Seifritz,Ranganatha Sitaram,Ranganatha Sitaram,Ranganatha Sitaram +20 more
TL;DR: This review summarizes progress in the field, introduces current debates, elucidates open questions, and offers viewpoints derived from the conference on real time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hierarchical prediction errors in midbrain and basal forebrain during sensory learning.
Sandra Iglesias,Sandra Iglesias,Christoph Mathys,Christoph Mathys,Kay H. Brodersen,Kay H. Brodersen,Lars Kasper,Lars Kasper,Marco Piccirelli,Hanneke E. M. den Ouden,Klaas E. Stephan,Klaas E. Stephan,Klaas E. Stephan +12 more
TL;DR: While fMRI measures do not reveal the exact neuron types activated in midbrain and basal forebrain, they suggest a dichotomy between neuromodulatory systems, linking dopamine to low-level PEs about stimulus outcome and acetylcholine to more abstract PEsabout stimulus probabilities.
Journal ArticleDOI
The PhysIO Toolbox for Modeling Physiological Noise in fMRI Data.
Lars Kasper,Steffen Bollmann,Andreea O. Diaconescu,Chloe Hutton,Jakob Heinzle,Sandra Iglesias,Tobias U. Hauser,Miriam Sebold,Zina-Mary Manjaly,Klaas P. Pruessmann,Klaas E. Stephan +10 more
TL;DR: Through its platform-independent Matlab implementation, open-source distribution, and modular structure, the PhysIO Toolbox renders physiological noise correction an accessible preprocessing step for fMRI data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute Stress Impairs Self-Control in Goal-Directed Choice by Altering Multiple Functional Connections within the Brain’s Decision Circuits
TL;DR: It is found that stress increased the influence of immediately rewarding taste attributes on choice and reduced self-control, which was accompanied by increased functional connectivity between ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and amygdala and striatal regions encoding tastiness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cognitive flexibility in adolescence: Neural and behavioral mechanisms of reward prediction error processing in adaptive decision making during development
Tobias U. Hauser,Tobias U. Hauser,Reto Iannaccone,Susanne Walitza,Daniel Brandeis,Silvia Brem +5 more
TL;DR: The findings indicate that decision making in adolescence goes beyond merely increased reward-seeking behavior and provides a developmental perspective to the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying cognitive flexibility in the context of reinforcement learning.
