In this paper, the scaling laws and similitude conditions of geotechnical centrifuge models were investigated. But only a few studies were devoted to the questions and concerns about scaling laws.
Abstract
Some forty years ago, when geotechnical centrifuge modelling had been rediscovered and was being developed once more after the early work of Phillips (1869), only a few studies were devoted to the questions and concerns about scaling laws and similitude conditions. During the first decades, it was relatively easy for researchers to keep themselves informed about the main outcomes of these studies and to take them into account when designing new centrifuge model tests. This is obviously not true today following the welcome growth in terms of the large number of centrifuge facilities now in operation around the world. It is increasingly difficult, but yet absolutely essential, to know about the relevant developments concerning studies into the scaling laws and, furthermore, into the limits of the domains of the use of centrifuge modelling. On the other hand, new media offers a significant opportunity to provide this resource to the physical modelling community. New topics are investigated by many researcher...

Investigation of Soil Arching with Centrifuge Tests

TL;DR: In this article, the authors revisited the classic experiment of a yielding trapdoor in (two-dimensional) plane strain beneath a granular mass, this time in the high-gravity environment of a geotechnical centrifuge.

Ground vibration isolation with geofoam barriers : Centrifuge modeling

TL;DR: In this paper, a parametric study was conducted to examine the influence of different parameters in some reduced scale models made of Expanded polystyrene (EPS) isolation barriers within Fontainebleau sand in order to determine geofoam isolation efficiency.

Impact mechanisms of granular and viscous flows on rigid and flexible barriers

TL;DR: In this article, a flexible model barrier together with a rigid barrier were used to simulate either dry granular or viscous liquid impacts on these model barriers in a geotechnical centrifuge.

Seismic soil–foundation–structure interaction observed in geotechnical centrifuge experiments

TL;DR: In this article, the experimental results from two geotechnical centrifuge tests examining seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction of frame structures are reported. But the results of the tests indicate that the seismic response of the shallow footings of a flexible frame structure is complex.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that the stress/strain behavior of soil alters with change of effective pressure p and specific volume v. The range of values of a new equivalent liquidity LI5 = LI+0·5 log (p′/5) associated with yielding is 1·9

Crater ejecta scaling laws - Fundamental forms based on dimensional analysis

TL;DR: In this article, self-consistent scaling laws for meteoroid impact crater ejecta were developed for the gravity and strength regimes of crater formation, and the authors concluded that, in the gravity regime, the thickness of an ejecta blanket is the same in all directions if the thickness and range are expressed in terms of the crater radius.

Tests of the interface between sand and steel in the simple shear apparatus

H. Kishida, +1 more
- 01 Mar 1987 -
TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison of simple shear test results for sand-steel interfaces with respect to three other types of interface testing apparatuses: the direct shear, the annular shear and the ring torsion types is made.
