Cigarette smoke-induced DNA damage in cultured human lung cells: role of hydroxyl radicals and endonuclease activation.

TLDR
The findings suggest that the ability of cigarette smoke to cause DNA single strand breaks in cultured lung cells is due to mechanisms involving hydroxyl radical attack on DNA and endonuclease activation, and that hydroquinone is an important contributor to the DNA damaging effect of cigarette Smoke on human lung cells.

Tobacco Smoke Carcinogens and Lung Cancer

TL;DR: By focusing in this review on several important carcinogens in tobacco smoke, the complexities in understanding tobacco-induced cancer can be reduced, and new approaches for lung cancer prevention can be envisioned.

Reactions of oxyl radicals with DNA.

TL;DR: This review focuses on the damage caused to DNA by reactive oxygen-centred radicals, which arise either from the radiolysis of water by ionizing radiation, or from a purely chemical source.

Cancer risk and oxidative DNA damage in man

TL;DR: Human studies support the experimentally based notion of oxidative DNA damage as an important mutagenic and apparently carcinogenic factor in carcinogenesis, but the proof of a causal relationship in humans is still lacking.

Genotoxicity of tobacco smoke and tobacco smoke condensate: a review.

TL;DR: The data support a model of tobacco Smoke carcinogenesis in which the components of tobacco smoke induce mutations that accumulate in a field of tissue that, through selection, drive the carcinogenic process.

Prooxidant states and tumor promotion.

Peter A. Cerutti
- 25 Jan 1985 -
TL;DR: Prooxidant states can be caused by different classes of agents, including hyperbaric oxygen, radiation, xenobiotic metabolites and Fenton-type reagents, modulators of the cytochrome P-450 electron-transport chain, peroxisome proliferators, inhibitors of the antioxidant defense, and membrane-active agents.

TL;DR: The compounds described are fluorescent Ca2+ indicators absorbing in the ultraviolet region; the very large spectral shifts observed on binding Ca2+, fit the prediction that complexation should hinder the conjugation of the nitrogen lone-pair electrons with the aromatic rings.

Hydroxyl Free Radical Adduct of Deoxyguanosine: Sensitive Detection and Mechanisms of Formation

TL;DR: It was found that ferrous ion, but not ferric ion, was effective in forming 8-OH-dG, and the hydroxyl free radical scavenging agents, thiourea and ethanol, were very effective in quenching Fe(11) mediated 8- OH- dG formation, but superoxide dismutase had very little effect.
