BlueHealth : A study programme protocol for mapping and quantifying the potential benefits to public health and well-being from Europe's blue spaces

TL;DR: The BlueHealth project aims to understand the relationships between exposure to blue space and health and well-being, to map and quantify the public health impacts of changes to both natural blue spaces and associated urban infrastructure in Europe, and to provide evidence-based information to policymakers on how to maximise health benefits associated with interventions in and around aquatic environments.

Developing the urban blue: Comparative health responses to blue and green urban open spaces in Germany.

TL;DR: Although the effects of water in cities, "urban blue" (as compared to "urban green"), on human health and well-being are found, some health-enhancing effects for users turned out to be prominent for urban blue in the four conceptual therapeutic landscape dimensions: experienced, symbolic, social and activity space.

Blue space, health and well-being: A narrative overview and synthesis of potential benefits.

TL;DR: A narrative review approach was adopted which aimed to highlight key issues and processes rather than provide a definitive balance of evidence summary, and novel aspects of the framework included the inclusion of outcomes that are only indirectly good for health through being good for the environment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Development of an urban green space indicator and the public health rationale

The validity of two versions of the GHQ in the WHO study of mental illness in general health care

TL;DR: The shorter GHQ is remarkably robust and works as well as the longer instrument, and the latter should only be preferred if there is an interest in the scaled scores provided in addition to the total score.

Do we really know what makes us happy? A review of the economic literature on the factors associated with subjective well-being

TL;DR: A detailed review of the literature on subjective well-being and its determinants can be found in this paper, where the authors highlight a range of problems in drawing firm conclusions about the causes of SWB; these include some contradictory evidence, concerns over the impact on the findings of potentially unobserved variables and the lack of certainty on the direction of causality.

How important is methodology for the estimates of the determinants of happiness

TL;DR: The authors developed a conditional estimator for the fixed-effect ordered logit model and found that assuming ordinality or cardinality of happiness scores makes little difference, whilst allowing for fixed-effects does change results substantially.
