TLDR
It is found that reexperiencing and avoidance/numbing components of PTSD were more strongly associated with drug abuse than alcohol abuse, but physiological arousal symptoms of PTSD are more highly correlated with alcohol abuse.

Sex differences in trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder: a quantitative review of 25 years of research.

TL;DR: Meta-analyses of studies yielding sex-specific risk of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) indicated that female participants were more likely than male participants to meet criteria for PTSD, although they were less likely to experience PTEs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stress-induced relapse to heroin and cocaine seeking in rats: a review.

TL;DR: Using a reinstatement procedure, it is shown that exposure to intermittent footshock stress reliably reinstates heroin and cocaine seeking after prolonged drug-free periods.
Journal ArticleDOI

Alcohol abuse in individuals exposed to trauma: A critical review.

TL;DR: The author critically reviews studies on the relationship between exposure to trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and alcohol abuse and outlines novel methods for testing theoretical hypotheses and makes suggestions for methodological improvements in future research.
Journal ArticleDOI

Posttraumatic stress disorder and the incidence of nicotine, alcohol, and other drug disorders in persons who have experienced trauma.

TL;DR: The findings do not support the hypothesis that exposure to traumatic events per se increases the risk for substance use disorders, and a modestly elevated risk for nicotine dependence might be an exception.

Experimental Design: Procedures for the Behavioral Sciences

Roger E. Kirk
TL;DR: This chapter discusses research strategies and the Control of Nuisance Variables, as well as randomly Randomized Factorial Design with Three or More Treatments and Randomized Block Factorial design, and Confounded Factorial Designs: Designs with Group-Interaction Confounding.

The michigan alcoholism screening test: the quest for a new diagnostic instrument

TL;DR: The MAST responses of 15 subjects who were found to be alcoholic in the record search were analyzed to determine where the screening failures had occurred and recommendations are made for reducing the number of such "falsė negatives."
Journal ArticleDOI

An improved diagnostic evaluation instrument for substance abuse patients. The Addiction Severity Index.

TL;DR: The use of the ASI is suggested to match patients with treatments and to promote greater comparability of research findings, suggesting the treatment problems of patients are not necessarily related to the severity of their chemical abuse.
Journal ArticleDOI

The drug abuse screening test.

TL;DR: Findings support the usefulness of the DAST for quantifying the extent of drug involvement within a help-seeking population, but further validation work is needed in other populations and settings.
