TLDR
In this article, the authors reported that the resulting densities in the lower mantle are in good agreement with shock-wave measurements on rocks having FeO contents in the range 10 ± 2% by weight.
Abstract
RECENTLY, Birch1 reported data on the density and composition of the mantle and core. He wrote: “The resulting densities in the lower mantle are found to be in good agreement with shock-wave measurements on rocks having FeO contents in the range 10 ± 2% by weight … except for iron oxide, the chemical composition of the mantle is indeterminate. The density of the outer core is lower than that of iron by about 10%”.

The composition of the Earth

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the relative abundances of the refractory elements in carbonaceous, ordinary, and enstatite chondritic meteorites and found that the most consistent composition of the Earth's core is derived from the seismic profile and its interpretation, compared with primitive meteorites, and chemical and petrological models of peridotite-basalt melting relationships.

Composition of the Continental Crust

TL;DR: In this paper, the present-day composition of the continental crust, the methods employed to derive these estimates, and the implications of continental crust composition for the formation of the continents, Earth differentiation, and its geochemical inventories are discussed.

The Composition of Zircon and Igneous and Metamorphic Petrogenesis

TL;DR: The importance of zircon in crustal evolution studies is underscored by its predominant use in U-Th-Pb geochronology and investigations of the temporal evolution of both the crust and lithospheric mantle as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetics of gene expression surveyed in maize, mouse and man

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe comprehensive genetic screens of mouse, plant and human transcriptomes by considering gene expression values as quantitative traits and identify a gene expression pattern strongly associated with obesity in a murine cross and observe two distinct obesity subtypes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Metamorphic zircon formation by solid-state recrystallization of protolith igneous zircon

TL;DR: In this paper, the age of metamorphic zircon has been determined using trace element analysis and integrated cathodoluminescence, U-Pb isotope, trace element and electron backscatter diffraction pattern (EBSP) analyses.

Density and composition of mantle and core

TL;DR: In this paper, the Adams-Williamson method was used to estimate the density of the lower and upper layers of the Earth's mantle and the inner core. But the upper and lower layers were assumed to have close-packed oxides, silica transforming to stishovite.

Mineral assemblages in a model mantle composition

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the mineralogy and geological environment of naturally occurring pyrolites is made, and the relative P-T stability fields of the different assemblages are inferred.

The constitution of the mantle—III Consequences of the olivine-spinel transition

TL;DR: In this article, it was suggested that the average composition of the mantle may approximate that of a garnet peridotite, and the temperature distribution required to make the phase transition region coincident with region C (Bullen) in which phase changes and inhomogeneity have been inferred.
