Constructing constructs for psychopathology: the NIMH research domain criteria.
TLDR
A description of the impetus for the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health's (NIMH) Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative is described and an update of progress on that initiative to date is provided.Abstract:
As a commentary for the special section on Reconceptualizing the Classification of Mental Disorders, this article begins with a description of the impetus for the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health's (NIMH) Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative and provides an update of progress on that initiative to date. The commentary then engages the articles in this special section, beginning with a response to Berenbaum's concern that the RDoC approach to sorting constructs across multiple units of analysis espouses a de facto biological fundamentalism. This leads us to delineate the relationship between RDoC and the NIMH priorities relevant to this initiative. The commentary then considers how Patrick's iterative "construct-network" method can be applied to RDoC construct validation, highlighting several aspects that are particularly useful. One aspect of this work involves determining subject inclusion and exclusion criteria that provide an appropriate range of variance. Finally, this commentary considers the Bilder group's article, explicating the ways in which multilevel models can foster development of hypotheses and informatics approaches needed for further RDoC progress.read more

Mechanisms Underlying Motivational Deficits in Psychopathology: Similarities and Differences in Depression and Schizophrenia
TL;DR: The literature strongly suggests the presence of impairments in in-the-moment hedonics or "liking" in individuals with depressive pathology, particularly among those who experience anhedonia, and provides much evidence for impairment in other components involved in translating reward to action selection.

TL;DR: It is argued that ACC function contributes to individual differences in personality traits related to reward sensitivity and persistence, and it is proposed that the maladaptive expression of these traits contributes to multiple mental and neurological disorders.

TL;DR: The neurobiology of ADHD is reviewed by focusing on neural circuits implicated in the disorder and how abnormalities in circuitry relate to symptom presentation and treatment and the shifting research landscape towards endophenotype refinement in clinical and preclinical settings is showcased.

Disorders without borders: current and future directions in the meta-structure of mental disorders
TL;DR: A dimensional-spectrum model which organizes mental disorders in an empirically based internalizing–externalizing model of psychopathology is reviewed, which provides a parsimonious means of addressing comorbidity and recommendations for future research endeavors are put forward.

Reinterpreting comorbidity: a model-based approach to understanding and classifying psychopathology.
TL;DR: A meta-analysis of a liability spectrum model of comorbidity is presented, in which specific mental disorders are understood as manifestations of latent liability factors that explain comorbridity by virtue of their impact on multiple disorders.
